Manager Reaction To Pompey Loss

He's already refused to use excuses for the performance against Boro and today he had to admit the team are down, but we will bounce back.

Unfortunately I doubt we can now bounce back in time to make a Euro run anymore and although everyone will be rightly disappointed with that, and the manner in which we allowed ourselves to fall away we should all remember that we never expected to be in this position at the beginning of the season, so our achievement has still been pleasing, and that shouldn't be forgotten.

The fact we are looking disappointed to not get automatic qualification shows how far we come in such a short period of time.

I'm sure MON realises this to, but when speaking to the official site, he wanted to remind everyone that with 8 games left we still have 24 points to play for and he's determined that we will play for them.

'The overwhelming feeling is one of disappointment in the dressing room - not just with the result, but the manner of the defeat.

'The goals, especially the second one, were really unfortunate for us. I thought we had as much of the play as the home side in the first-half and we started off brightly.

'The first goal was a poor one from our point of view, but even from then I thought we were well in the game. The second goal was a freak goal.

'But even at half-time, 2-0 down, I thought we were still in the game and if we could score early enough then perhaps we'd be able to force the pace.

'We tried to do that and missed a glorious chance as Gabby got on the end of a dangerous cross from Shaun Maloney. We would have had plenty of time to get something from the game, but it didn't happen.

'Regardless of how we played though, we've been beaten. Statistics are all that matters in this game and we lost the game.'

The manner of the defeat is definitely unfortunate, we had more shots and more shots on target than Pompey but as O'Neill alludes to, it's goals that count not how many saves the opposition keeper makes or how many chances you create.

If you create them and fail to put them away you will drop points.

He continued: 'It's really disappointing for myself and the players. It's obviously disappointing for the fans who travelled down here today.

'But, whether this is a note of defiance or not, we're still there and we've got eight games left. There's a lot of disappointment in the dressing room, but also a determination to put it right.

'We've got eight games and 24 points left to play for. This was the first time we've failed to score in the league since September, so we know there are goals in our side. We'll work hard to get back to winning ways.'

Let's hope we can turn it around and although I now think our Euro dream is over in terms of automatic qualification the team deserve to push those above us close and to come back fighting even if we don't get there.

The worst thing possible would be for us to now fall away quietly and ruin all the good work we put in at the beginning of the season.

I do get the feeling that late goal v the Arsenel has knocked the lads for six, but said that its time to secure inter toto at least. And why did we not go for Defoe? The man is goals!

bit disappointing for you lot! One point out of six isn't what you need at this stage of the season!

my thinking is this is about squad numbers, freshness, and tiring. we need some kind of small-ish rotation policy. Defoe would have been a great buy in january, we didn't even put in for him. MON seemed happy, and rightly so, but sooner or later things change. one point here; olly gets red, gardners injured, we sold cahill.

Our Euro dreams ended last weekend and we never kicked a ball,I think we'll overtake Pompy again next week but even if we dont theyve already got Europe so it makes no difference, probably better off not entering Inter toto cup and we're desperatley unfortunate at the way the Euro placings have worked out this season weve done great.

Not having a game after the good result at Arsenal cant really be used as an excuse, sorry. Imagine how many game extra we would have played had we been in Europe and had a decent run in both domestic cups this season. Time to MON to realise he needs to bring in players of quality to add to the current squad.

the difference in the game was goalkeepers!! James was fantastic kept out a number of our chances and carson was awful gifted pompey 2 goals he did not need to come out for either of them!! one mistake too many for me!! capello leave him out so he gets a kick up the backside! i agree we need more players but i think MON was seeing if were getting into europe then he would have attracted bigger players next year!! all is not lost pompey 4 cup then 7th will be intertoto!!

the manner in which we conceded again arsenal has had a huge impact on the confidence. But lets not forget we had 16 attempts 10 on target, that's not a shabby stat for an away side. OK stats mean nothng, but we played well and on another day could and maybe should have won!!!!

Got to say, if you look at when this run has begun it points to the fact we have the need for another top class striker, winger, midfielder and defender....not getting overwhelmed by the loss but it points to a tired squad in need of a little sprucing up with some newboys...and on that note i actually agree with AV48

Plenty of possession, but rarely looked like doing anything with it. We hadn't got a David James, we hadn't got a Jermain Defoe. Come to think of it, we hadn't got a Glen Johnson either. By the way, can anyone decipher what the hell ozanne park rangers is trying to say?

The fact of the matter is on the bench, MON hardly had any attacking options on the bench. 3 Central midfield playes in Osborne, Salifou & Petrov (Well he certainly aint a wide-man is he??) Harewood was there, but would it really of hurt to have routledge on the bench? Good pace & an eye for a cross. I'm surprised he hasn't made even a squad yet! We can moan about MON not having a squad but when the man refuses to give the squad players a go, nobody knows how good they will be. A freshen-up wouldnt hurt anyone! What do u reckon lads?

notaspur; apparently Routledge is very low on confidence and needs more time to settle and build his confidence. Also I cant be sure what ozanne park rangers is saying but I guess he is saying we drew the second half which would make the gaffer happy??????

hey Guys, pompey fan here. I thought you played well yesterday but reminded me of Pompey when we couldn't score a couple of months back. You get yourselves a first class striker and you'll right up there ...

gappy, WR has only been given an 18 month deal. Surely the best way to boost his confidence is by feeding him in gradually with a few sub appearances. He's not gonna feel any better by watching the lads round him geting in on the action. He must be thinking this is signs of Martin Jol all over again. Lets face it, can he be any worse than Dr. Petrov? Even he made the bench yesterday!

As always, notaspur, we fans don't see these players day in, day out at training - the manager and his team do. Do you know how WR and the others on the fringes of the team are doing, day to day? I don't.

We'll bounce back from this disappointment. We have to, unless we care to see seven months of hard graft and exciting football disappear down the drain. Bring on Sunderland.

Notaspur; I agree RW has only an 18 month contract, But to throw him in while he's low on confidence would be a bad move in my opinion! because if he failed he may never recover! MON knows what he is doing! he seems to be great man manager, so I guess we will see RW when the manager thinks he is ready!!!

This sucks. What a let down it's been this past month. and I KNEW Everton were going to lose to Fulham. We couldn't capitalize...we don't deserve europe.
