Carew Wants To Extend Stay

John Carew has said to the Evening Mail he would love to extend his contract at Villa, even though he has two years left on his current deal.

Since moving to us from Lyon on a swop deal involving some player who's struggled since, Carew's has been quite up and down in terms of form, injuries and application.

This season he has hit 9 goals, and over the last few weeks has started to look absolutely phenomenal for us upfront and although considered a nomad given the number of clubs and countries he's visited during his career, he appears to be absolutely adoring life at Villa Park.

'Would I sign for longer? Absolutely, but that is down to the club and whether they are still happy with me.

It has been a good season for me. Injuries have cost me only six or seven games.

'I really love being here. The fans have been fantastic.'

Carew experience will really show on the European stage I think, but that hasn't stopped him from trying to have an educational affect on our younger players already.

'I am only 28 but I have been lucky to have experienced a lot. And I try to bring all that experience from playing every season in the big matches in the Champions League and European Cups - I try to pass that on to the players here.'

Carew also admits his form has been somewhat wayward since he first moved here, but he believes such fluctuations are normal for every player, but he's pleased with his own improvement this season and he says that given the disappointment the players felt at drawing with Arsenal, it shows exactly how far the club have come in such a short period of time.

'That is normal for every player, it is not special to just me. You will have periods when your form goes up and down, but generally I think my form has been pretty good.

'It is disappointing. It feels like a loss of two points.

'Arsenal created very little. Before the match if you'd said we would get one point we'd have been happy but we feel a bit disappointed.'

The jury is still out with me. If we go out and sign a top class striker inthe summer would he be prepared to sit around waiting for a game?... bugger, what was I thinking... a signing, nah keep him.

I probably should have mentioned this at the time but a few weeks ago Carew said on Norwegian TV that he finally feels at home at at football club and would like to end his career at Aston Villa. Great noises from the big man if he can perform to the standard he has in the last few (Fulham excepted but then that goes for the whole team)

what is this song that i have read about in the press that villa sang against Le Arse on saturday that was somewhat a little bit naughty?

Just what the Villa need, An Experienced quality striker, happy at VP. Who else would you have Hoss?

I thought he was man of the match against Arsenal. He brought the ball down and layed it off constantly. He was always holding the ball and waiting for players. He was back throwing his body infront of the ball on defense. He was everywhere. I'm pleased to hear he'd like to end his career with us. Even when we get new signings, I'll be dissapointed that some of the players will have to sit on the bench at some point because I've grown to be so proud of them this season. I don't even make transfers in Fifa 08 for my Xbox 360! (except Henrik Larsson....EVERY team needs Henrik Larsson).

I just did the math for the rest of the season. There are 30 points up in the air, besides Liverpool who have 33 points to grab. I think Villa need atleast 25 out of those 30. Hypothetically speaking here's how I calculated Everton, Liverpool, and Aston Villa... Aston Villa - lose to united (even though I think we will win) which takes us to 27, and tie one other game ( any game but the everton one cause we need to win that). That would be 25 out of 30. Liverpool - Lose to Arsenal and united. That's 27. And I think they will tie against Everton and either man city or tottenham in the last 2 games. 23 points out of 33. Everton - Lose to chelsea, us, and arsenal. Tie liverpool. 19. Maybe they'll even tie chelsea or arsenal and it will be 20 out of 30. That would leave all of us tied and have to be on goal differential. Any thoughts?

Agree with the first post by Hoss. He's a good enough striker for now, but the so-called "five-year" plan may well suggest he won't be good enough for the club by the end of his contract.

With more quality added, he'll get better and better with luck? When is on form, he really is a menace but glad he knows he has been very in and out of form. Hopefully now he is up to speed with the prem and fit he can help fire us into Europe this season as he sounded like he was on red hot form v Arsenal.

Carew should get a 1 year extension next Jan and thats about right if he keeps it up. Remember Angel and now Berger who got too comfortable with the monies and security and we should keep them on their toes.

Whoa LA Villan, we should be aiming as high as possible but also should be very grateful for 6th place and the UEFA cup which is still far from guaranteed.

He's played very well the past few games, he's a pain in the arse for any defence, I like him. He was an absolute great swap for Baros, who is a load of *****e, one good tournament

Villan444, I am being realistic. You don't think it's possible to go through the season with one more loss and one more tie? I definitely do. Win 8 out 10. We can do it.

3 draws! That's saying we're going to draw everton, portsmouth and west ham. Come on krisvilla! Have more faith than that! If we even want our name in the same sentence as champions league we need to be able to beat portsmouth and west ham, even away. and this is the year we beat man u. JUST YOU WAIT

8 wins is a lot to be honest, we are gonna have an off day or two or three, i just think mine is more realistic ;-) but i love your enthusiasm, i hope your right but we cant legislate for injuries etc

I admire your faith LA and think we will definitely win the home 5 but all the away games bar Derby are potential banana skins. Unfortunately I think the Manure will be a sure loss and its going to be down to whether we can do Blue Scouse and Pompey who will be our closest rivals to 5th or 4th if luck and lack of injuries are on our side.

8 wins IS alot. I agree. And I think we can accomplish it. Time will tell my fellow villans. This is all too exciting. I let the weekend games determine how my week is going to be and I'm super depressed still over the Arsenal game. I can't wait till middlesbrough.

Carew has been an unsung hero all season an't beleive how lukewarm the response to this article is. He has played against two centrehalfs on his own in virtually every game this season. Gabby and Ashley have benefitted from the space provided and his link up play (when we arn't lumping 60 yards balls to him) is excellent. There is no doubt tht as the team grows big john will grow with it. As for world class signings, look where the guy has played, look at the managers who have paid good money for him, this guy is a world class signing!

Personally its not just his goals its what else he brings to the side, holds the ball and leads from the front. It may have escaped some's notice but he was defending like a lion when required.

Yeah as i say Carew has impressed a lot lately, the balls arent being lumped up to him as much, he's taking on players a lot more now, he's got some good skill, I think it was a great swap, i mean he's left lyon now Baros and on the bench at pompey

i rate him - and obviously more so when he's fully fit. Its clear he loves the club as well, which in my book counts for a lot. We definately miss him when he doesn't play, which says it all.

Our front line is full of small fast guys (if Harewood continues on the bench) who else would be helping Ashley Young top the assists chart. Carew leads the line as well as any I've seen in the prem for a while, he definitely is giving 100%, seems to love the fans and is very effective after a slow start, why knock the guy?

Glad to see common sense prevailing in these last few comments (Other than the Real Neil who is a tool). Carew is better than any big man in my lifetime at Villa - and I've seen all of them since Sammy Morgan, Andy Lochhead and Keith Leonard. He has more skill than any give him credit for, he has pace (only LOOKS slow because he is playing with Ashley, Gabby etc.), works hard, and takes loads of punishment from defenders.... The only player we've had who is comparible is Peter Withe - but he relied heavily on Gary Shaw as a partner - never the same player after Shaw got injured.... What many of the early posters don't understand is the fact that Carew, in essence, takes the beating that would usually be reserved for Gabby and Ashley.

Glad that you can teach us some common sense, it must be hard trying not be condescending. The jury is out for me on Carew until he can reproduce the form he has been showing recently on a regular basis and can stay injury free. I think, just like Carew says himself if you read the article.

I think Carew's a great player when he's on form. He's had his injuries and off games for sure, but he was awesome against Arsenal, heart of the team in that one. Loves the Villa too. The defence rests. Him and the Hare up front can cause any defence nightmares, as we've seen (Newcastle anyone ? ho ho)

I like Big JC. Best target man seen at Villa Park since Peter Withe, but with two years still left on his current deal, I wouldn't be rushing around just yet offering a new contract extension. Doesn't make sense, does it?
