To Keep Keeper Or Not To Keep Keeper

Scott Carson has dropped a hint that he'd love to join Villa permanently in the summer but has to stop short of saying so as he is still a contracted Liverpool player!

The on-loan keeper, who has kept both Thomas Sorensen and Stuart Taylor out of contention this season, explains that his move isn't a 'done deal' and that it is just a loan deal until the end of the season although he also adds, 'any time from now until then they could make it permanent. It's down to all three parties.'

On where he would like to end up he says he can't really say because he is contracted to the Anfield outfit but adds, 'I like it at Aston Villa and I want to get settled for next season. But it's down to Liverpool, Aston Villa and myself to decide where I ought to be. There's not a lot I can do. I've got three years left at Liverpool and I don't know what Aston Villa are thinking. I don't know if there's anything else in the pipeline, we'll have to wait.'

What do you reckon, should we be taking him on permanently, do you think he has done enough to impress Martin O'Neill?

Our poll, run on 17 December 2007, asked whether you had been impressed with Scott Carson so far, the results were:

Yes, sign him up (58%)
Not good enough for 10m (29%)
Jury is still out (7%)
He is no more commanding than Sorensen was (3%)
He has been ok (3%)

Another more recent poll asked who you thought would be the first choice keeper next season, only 24% thought it would be Scott Carson.

Guzan, the American we missed in the window (46%)
Other new keeper (27%)
Carson -On a permanent deal (24%)
Carson - On a further loan (1%)
Stuart Taylor (1%)
Thomas Sorenson (1%)

He'll never be able to compete with Reina at Liverpool, so it's safe to say he will leave them very soon. Villa or not, that's another question.
not unless he vastly improves in the end of season games, he has not done enough for me. They showed jimmy bullards free kick, the ball was slightly off centre as it went in the goal and carson was blaming his wall with his hands in the air. No mate that was your fault you really are rubbish........ (watch him have a cracker today now ;-()
Respect due to Carson, but I tend to think he is definetely not worth 10M, and will krisvilla said, a 10M keeper would have stopped Jimmy Bullard's free kick...even my sunday league team keeper would have stopped it actually...UTV
After another shakey performance today, I'd say no way Jose, not at the pricess the press have spoken about anyway.
The Fear
He's crap
Carson, to me, seems little better than Taylor so I reckon Guzan at a fraction of the cost it would seem we will have to pay for Carson, is a much better bet. IMO today's performance was not the sort that is expected from an England keeper.
yep, and he still cant keep a clean sheet, which keepers are judged on, readings keeper had some good saves today. Carson could be a liability next season especially when we are in the champ league ;-)
How can people talk about Guzan. Who has seen him play at Premiership level?
think its the case of anyone can be better than mr indecisive, we got a good defence and we keep conceeding , the keeper needs to pitch in a bit
We are on the verge of making Carson the next Robinson. I wouldn't pay 10m for what we've seen, not by a long way, but he made a few game-saving saves today. I can understand why they're not mentioned, as Keepers mistakes are far more memorable than any others, due too them being the last line of defence. It is infuriating, and he needs to cut them out, but managed to stop two of the looping Shorey freekicks from going ing, and everybody knows they are fiendishly difficult to deal with.
Yeah but carl when he made some saves he bundled it back in the box, only through some desperate defending we were let off the hook. Then the indecision of collecting the ball that happened a few times in the second half we do that against arsenal next week, we shall lose the game
He's ok but there are better out there. And he has been protected by a solid defence this season. 10m? - jog on.
Well the most glaring indecision was the fult of Laursen and not Carson, and it is the only such incident I can remember, although i can see why Scott would get the blame for that. Have you ever tried to make a reflex save? Robbo made a very similar one against Chelsea in extra time, and where did the ball go? I just think you have it in for him kris, as every week, no matter how well everything has gone there's always blame on Carson. What about the other week at Newcastle? Or all of the clean sheets from earlier in the season. By no means am I saying he was great today, or that he never makes mistakes, but I get the feeling we could win 2-1 after being on the back foot all game and the goal being peppered, and then Carson would be blamed for the one that he didn't save. After all, you've agreed that the saves helped us win, but have immediately put him down again.
Yeah I must admit it, I have made a reflex save, the lid on my butter was falling towards the floor (and it always falls on the buttered side) but right at the last minute I saved it and put the lid nicely back on. ;-) All seriousness aside your right im not a fan of Carson and many other villa supporters are not that keen. 12/13 games gone by with no cleen sheet tells the story. I will continue to put him down untill a good performance shows me he is worthy of being the Villa keeper for the future.
I think Carson knows that he will probably not be here next season but would like to be. I also think he feels he has blown it but if he really is good enough for the Villa he needs to say sod the past I have 11 games to get the deal that could make me. In reality it is 11 games that are going to decide if he has a career in the Premiership or not - he needs to make that decision.
pongo wearing
it might be pressuring him a bit to perform, I think he'll go back to lpool and be deputy to Reina because the one they got at the moment is very poor
Is Jussi Jaaskelainen Still Out of contract at the end of the season. A signing on fee & we get a half decent Goalie if there is no one else around. Scott is just OK 3m I would perfer us to have a good GK for a Few Years than Gamble 9m for the Future. Its a Key position to take a chance on
Villa will buy someone like Jaskalieneen or what ever his name is from Bolton. He is genuine quality and available for about 3-4mill, no way will we pay 10 mill for Carson he must be spraying his gloves with teflon before every game.
I'm not convinced that MON and his assistants are convinced about the competence and ability of Scott Carson, and personally I'll be surprised if we land him. I cant make up my mind about, but like the vast majority out there, I agree that 10m is way over the top. Half that maybe, if even that.
