Villa Enter Inter Two Bob Cup

Villa Enter Inter Two Bob Cup

Villa have confirmed that they have put their names down for the Inter Toto Cup as a means of European qualification should we fail to get automatic entry via a top six placings.

Only yesterday Vital Villa published our poll results with 75% of fans backing a Inter Two Bob cup entry if it means the chance of European Football back at Villa Park next season. Full Results Click Here

The competition, which we won under John Gregory in 2001, has changed and we'd only have to play one round to get into the second round of qualifying for the Uefa Cup. You following this?!? The games would be played over two legs over the weekends of July 19/20 and 26/27.

Martin O'Neill has said that putting our name in the hat doesn't mean Villa will give up on automatic entry. He told the official site:

'It's just covering bases, but we've got a chance and we're going to try and charge on if we can. We've got ourselves into a position where we've got a 12-game season and we'll be going into it all guns blazing. This is in no way a signal that we've given up hope of qualifying for Europe automatically, nothing could be further from the truth, but as I say we're covering all bases.'

Adding, 'Considering you only two games at the end of July - which would correspond with us coming back for pre-season anyway. It's something for us to keep in the back of our minds as we press forward - why not have it as an option? We didn't apply last season because when they were talking about it we had a lot of ground to make up. We're still making up that ground, but we're a bit better equipped this time around.'

I like this idea and its definately a good competative pre-season tournament. This may give us the start that we need to next years season. We may qualify directly for the UEFA yet, or even CL but its a good decision.

Agreed krfeskivilla, a bigger squad is an absolute must now Martin. No failings, no excuses, get cracking the day the current campaign draws to a close. Quality in numbers, thats what we so desperately need for a european adventure.

This is good news, particularly if Souds win the cup and the FA cup final has a unqualified team. Who else has applied? I've read that we need to finish 8th or better to qualify. I presume Blackburn and Citeh have applied too.

We need a biggr squad if we are to begin competative football in july. MON must have plans afoot to go into the intertoto with this squad...

It seems we are all thinking the same ie: we need a bigger squad, Gappy65 i hope your right chap i hope MO'N has got plans afoot, but as for entering the inter two bit i think this could be a mistake as we have all seen in the last few games some players are a little tired and yes they are on a two week break/training session but bye the end of the season may well just be the same. If we improve the squad then that alone will take time to gel before the begining of the new season and IMO a cup tournament may just have the wrong affect on the new season let alone distract MO'N from getting more quality players !!! and lets face it does MO'N really need that distraction.

Don't agree - we normally do pre-season tours anyway, normally to some Scandawegian (my word) country. This just replaces those meaningless friendlies with a proper competitive run-out. You see the likes of the teams in this tournament, and it's one route we'd happily take I think...

I think the intertoto can work as a preseason if your sqad is big enough to cope. But I have seen teams start really well in domestic football after playing in the intertoto. But tail away badly west ham for example a couple of seasons ago. So like I said we need a sqad big enough to cope. The 1 thing in our favour sadly there is no international football this summer.

It's only 2 games. That isn't going to have a huge effect on our squad and surely MON will be bringing in new players this summer. There is International football this Summer for some players. Just not the English ones.

I'll support our clubs decision, I'll attend the games, but I must admit to agreeing with Mutt_Man, I do have reservations.
