Villa have confirmed that they have put their names down for the Inter Toto Cup as a means of European qualification should we fail to get automatic entry via a top six placings.
Only yesterday Vital Villa published our poll results with 75% of fans backing a Inter Two Bob cup entry if it means the chance of European Football back at Villa Park next season. Full Results Click Here
The competition, which we won under John Gregory in 2001, has changed and we'd only have to play one round to get into the second round of qualifying for the Uefa Cup. You following this?!? The games would be played over two legs over the weekends of July 19/20 and 26/27.
Martin O'Neill has said that putting our name in the hat doesn't mean Villa will give up on automatic entry. He told the official site:
'It's just covering bases, but we've got a chance and we're going to try and charge on if we can. We've got ourselves into a position where we've got a 12-game season and we'll be going into it all guns blazing. This is in no way a signal that we've given up hope of qualifying for Europe automatically, nothing could be further from the truth, but as I say we're covering all bases.'
Adding, 'Considering you only two games at the end of July - which would correspond with us coming back for pre-season anyway. It's something for us to keep in the back of our minds as we press forward - why not have it as an option? We didn't apply last season because when they were talking about it we had a lot of ground to make up. We're still making up that ground, but we're a bit better equipped this time around.'
