Lerner Listens Over 39th Game

Randy Lerner has stated that he isn't comfortable with the FA's idea to money spin a league match abroad.

The General has told fans on this site that Randy would listen to us, and we've ample proof of that so far. The General also specifically said that our thoughts on this ridiculous idea would be conveyed to Randy, and as ever the General has kept word.

It also appears that Randy was ahead of us on this matter as the Evening Mail are carrying quotes from last October attributed to our Chairman.

Apparently Lerner was asked whether he would entertain the idea of moving venues for games in the build up to the NFL game at Wembley and said:

'I wouldn't be comfortable with Villa versus Manchester United, for instance, being played in Cleveland or New York or Beijing.

'You go to Goodison or Villa Park or St James' and the environment is vital.

'You take two teams and don't have the home fans - and don't have what is brought by the fans who have travelled - then you're dismantling something, I find that concerning.

'The soul of English football is characterised by tradition.'

So far the club have not made any official comment, we have however heard Martin O'Neill's thoughts but he admitted that it would need careful consideration given the specific proposals.

Plenty have made their thoughts known, even Graham Taylor described the idea as madness saying 'It is stupid, it's crazy. It will kill our game,' and I for one certainly do not disagree with him.

I do find it funny though given the FA's and others comments and concerns that the influx of foreign owners, and the Americans could have a damaging effect on the game as they didn't share our tradition and so on, when the fact of the matter is - as usual - it's the FA that is systematically destroying the game we love in their never ending pursuit for an extra dollar!

Maybe the FA themselves could learn some tradition from Randy Lerner, he seems far more trraditional than they ever have!

We already know we have the best owner in the EPL. Soon everyone will know.

Anyone ever seen the movie Basketball? The way sport developed in that, kinda funny to see sport really going that way, all about money.

Well when Scudamore announced that all twenty premiership clubs had voiced initial approval towards the plans, I wonder who then had actually spoken on behalf of AVFC?

As the good General has just confirmed, these quotes are four months old, about something slightly different, and Randy did agree to look further into the possibilities.

I read that Randy wasn't at the meeting but has held back to avoid being seen to be breaking ranks with the other 19. Interestingly the USA and Chinese Feds have stated they are against it, COCAF have aleady ruled out a similar move involving a US club playing in Mexico, FIFA / UEFA are yet to rule on it, and The FA can stop it at a stroke. So for this to happen a lot of other people need to sell their souls, and the choice and number of venues is being restricted rapidly. Scudamore has also said its to stop the "big 4" from breaking away, which most fans thik would improve football in this country anyway, the whole situation is bizarre.

A quote from the good General. "General Krulak here: 1. Lot's of disussion over Randy's quotes in the paper....followed by Mr. Scudamore's reply. Simply put, Randy's comments were, in fact, made in October BUT, the passage of 4 months does not change his feelings re. English Football, the history, traditions and ethos of that sport. I reiterate, the only question asked at the meeting concerned "exploring"....Randy's comments made 4 months send a very clear signal about the sport and the fans. I have said it before, trust Randy." And it's a point a few have made. The owners have not agreed to any proposal of the idea, just a proposal to explore the idea. Besides, what in 4 months could've changed Mr Lerner's opinion. Scudamore is merely spouting more crap if you ask me. I expect him to start looking more and more tired as this farce goes on.

Smart comments from a smart chairman whenever they were made

right then! firstly, Vital Villa, its the Birmingham Mail, the evening mail doesn't exist (as a member of staff, i'm contractually obliged to put people straight on this!) secondly, johnnyuk, its BASEketball (now i'm being pedantic, but its a funny film) thirdly, the general is the man, my brother, like many villa fans, has had the pleasure of him introducing himself and stopping for a 10 minute chat during the game with my brother. adam deuce, your completely right, we are the luckiest team in the prem at the moment, long may it continue! our randy is promising bucks being spent - http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_3145529,00.html if were in europe by may then we can get some good reinforcement in what has to be 'team of the year'

If lerner means what he says (still cant see him turning his back on the extra revenue) and IS against the proposals then you boys have got a great chairman there. Hes done a very good job at Villa steadying the ship and bringin in o'neill was a smart move.
