O'Neill Keen On Further Fixture

O'Neill Keen On Further Fixture

How strange that managers say they get fed up with the fixture pile ups and then one backs the idea of further fixtures, and this time possibly half way around the world!

Martin O’Neill has told the Express & Star 'It’s a surprising and innovative idea. It will be interesting to see how it develops and what the fans reaction is to it. We’ve seen the proposals and they appear very exciting. It will be interesting to see how the whole things develops over time.'

So what do you think? Early reaction from fans seem very much against this idea. Our latest poll, suggested by Col8 asks

Would you be happy to see Villa play one of their games abroad from 2009/10 ?

Absolutely not

It's a stupid idea and would make the whole concept of the league system unfair. Imagine Man Utd and Arsenal tied for top spot after 38 games, and Arsenal draw Derby for their extra game but Man United draw Spurs! All hell would break loose.

Let's see exactly what the proposals are before making a final judgement. All we have so far is rumours of how it might work. If a fair system can be agreed upon then I don't have a problem with it but it must not take the place of a home game, thus losing home advantage and screwing over ST holders.

VOTN - Think about it, it is impossible to implement a 39th fixture "fairly". It just can't be done.

I'll await judgement until I know the facts. It's called being an adult and taking a concidered approach. If the system being mooted in the press is the one to be implemented then I agree, it's bollox but let's not jump on any bandwagons just yet.

I like the ''Over My Dead Body'' option of the poll, like it matters what we think!! It would take all the fans to walk away over it for them to care, but we wont so they wont.

I don't like this at all, BUT it will happen because of the £ signs. Clubs call for a mid-season break, so I think the best way of it working is as follows... Play up to 3rd Round of FA Cup as normal..Then have a 3 week break..but in the middle week of this break play these matches, thus negating the effect of travel fatigue. I don't like this seeding idea. The bottom line is that by introducing a 39th game you take away the arguement that the league 'never lies' and 'luck doesn't come into it' because the 39th game is a CUP game with league points at stake. It should therefore be done on an open draw basis, and NOT seeded to suit the top teams. I DO NOT LIKE THIS IDEA ONE BIT, but it WILL happen, so we have to look at the best way of doing it. Unfortunately most fans will be totally against the destruction of the philosophy of our league, but as we know, no one gives a xxxx about the fans.

Will be fun at the airports should Villa be paired with the Dildo Salesmen form Somali Heath. Imagine Several thousand Villa and B-lose fans at Birmingham Airport waiting to get on flight to play each each other elsewhere in the world. Same if it is any of the London clubs, Manure against Man Citeh, Barcodes against Mackems, Redscouse against Bluescouse etc. And thats not forgetting what could happen at the actual destination. The potential for carnage should put this idea to rest immediately. As somebody else said earlier, using this season as an example, how fair would it be if The Arse played an extra game against Derby and Manure had to play against someone like Everton. Imagine if the Arse won and Manure drew and that meant the Arse won the league by a point. It is reducing the Premier League to a cup competition that could decide a league title on the luck of the draw. It is wrong and no amount of spin is going to change those two elements that make the proposal dangerous, ill thought out and unworkable.

The money for this fixture will be distributed evenly, why even bother? if everyone gets the same out of it, teams gain no advantage over premiership clubs. All this will do is make it even more difficult for teams being promoted into the PL, making it even more likely that the relegated teams from the PL do well in the Championship the next season as they have the Relegation payment and on top of that what will probably be quite a large sum of money from this 39th fixture. Of course PL clubs will want it as it only adds more distance betwean PL and the Championship. PL players will be paid more money meaning more players from overseas and any decent player in the Championship is more likely to leave their Championship side to get the extra cash off PL teams. This is a worrying move for the future of Football and it makes you wonder how any lower league side is going get enough money to keep afloat in the future. Barnet's just down the road from me and I think when this axtra game is introduced which is obviously inevitable, Barnet will be gaining my support over the club that should have had my support for my lifetime.

In contrast to PTPs point - it would make English clubs stronger in the Champions League as they are likely to have a financial advantage over many of their opponents.
