'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Who'll Be Our Keeper Next Season?

Martin O'Neill says he doesn't know if Liverpool are willing to sell on loan goalkeeper Scott Carson or not explaining,

'I'm trying to look a bit further forward but I don't know the situation with Liverpool. They might turn around and say 'Scott is now our No.1 goalkeeper after having that year of experience' or say 'he's here to really battle Pepe Reina'.'

As the Villa Blog pointed out, Rafa Benitez has already stated that the ball was very much in Villa's court. We covered the quotes from the Liverpool boss last November when he said: 'At the moment we are concentrating on our own team and our own competitions, but Villa can decide if they want to keep the player. We have Pepe, Charles Itandje and David Martin as goalkeepers so we can manage the situation OK.'

Our latest poll, suggested by Graydon, asks who will be our keeper next season.

I keep saying it, the guy just aint good enough, evrtytime the ball is kicked it seems to be nestling in the back of the net. As i say 11 cleen sheets last year, this year 7 clean sheets and the last one was 12 games ago against B'Burn. We have a good defence, we are 6th in the leauge, its a good job we have scored a few this year, otherwise we wouldnt be looking that rosy
krisvilla
There are still 13 games left this season though, kris. I agree, he always has me on edge, but even with our poor record in terms of conceding, we have a fairly decent run in now, and there is every possibility he could surpass 11 clean sheets, he needs 5 out of 13. I hope he can get them, whether he's capable is another matter.
Carlosio
Yeah but what im saying is we had a very average season last season drew far too many. This season we been better but still conceeding a few, Carson he aint good enough I tells yer!
krisvilla
I have to agree with KrisVilla. I have also said many times that, while Carson is an OK 'keeper, he's not the class we need. He doesn't make "big" saves like a Cech, Reina, Van Der Saar etc. I'm starting to think that Taylor may be a better option, even for the remainder of this season. I think he's been very patient and professional(unlike Sorensen) and he has pulled off some great saves when called upon.....
gmvillan
there is nothing extra orinary about him, just a simple keeper, but not saved much to say wow that was a great save on a consistent basis
krisvilla
I do like carson but from what i have seen he is not massively better than taylor.Having said that it`s important to remember carson is still young and will improve a lot.
british84
But 10m though?
PTP
Too young I think. Look at all the best 'keepers down the years and most hit peak form well into their 30's (Friedel, James, Van De saar, Schmeichel, Seaman). Cech is an exception. Carson is probably 10 years from hitting his peak and even then I question his agility.
gmvillan
Gotta go for this American guy. I just dont rate Carson as a top 10 Premiership keeper at all.
DeanoVilla
DeanoVilla - I totally agree with you. He still makes too many mistakes for a £10mill keeper. The free-kick that beat him at Fulham made up my mind. I think we'll settle on the Yank with Taylor as an excellent and loyal number 2.
villacross
It's taken a long while for the penny to drop that Carson isn't any better than what we all ready had . As for those who think he'll get better with age , I say Marvyn Day and Richard Wright! I do think MON has sussed him hence the American Keeper?
Villan57
If us supporters have sussed him then i'm sure MON has, Rob Green should be ahead of him in the England aquad
krisvilla
I hope we have Scott Carson on board permanently, with a new face providing quality back-up.
glensider
Have to agree with most of this. Carson is young and will get better but isn't anywhere near first choice pL keeper yet. As for buying him £2 mill maybe £2.5 but certainly not 10. If we want a dodgy keeper we could buy Robinson for about £4 mill. I hear there's a good goalie at Hull called Boaz Myhill, we could get him for a could of mill, very good keeper i'm told!!
