Villa To Return For USA Keeper

According to reports today, Martin O'Neill is set to return to American Soccer League team Chivas in the summer to try to resurrect the move for goalkeeper Brad Guzan. The shot stopper was blocked by the Home Office from making a £2m move as he hadn't played for his country enough times.

Martin O'Neill explained: 'We wanted to try and get Brad Guzan in because I believe he has got really good ability. He wanted to come to Aston Villa, which was really encouraging, but his appeal for a work permit was turned down. They do not tell you why, six people sit in on it and take a vote. I am certainly going to have a look at it again in the future. If you are talking about the keepers that America has produced then he is in line with those.'

USA manager Bob Bradley added on Setanta Sports: 'His mentality is really strong. He got thrown into a difficult situation his first year with Chivas. As a young goalkeeper that's hard. I would say not all young goalkeepers would have survived that year. Brad's got a competitive side to him. He's got a real mentality that holds up under pressure.'

Is this move with the No2 spot in mind or has Scott Carson not done enough to impress O'Neill during his loan spell from Liverpool? Has he done enough to impress you?

the epitome of a pathetic villa story in my view

I think evryone on this site accepts that Carson is not good enough, just proved that with the positioning of that goal. David James, Petr cech, Van Der Sar, Tim howard...... I cant really mention him in the same way as I do them keepers. Ok he is young but it cost us a point on Sunday, ship out and get someone else in.
krisvilla
We need someone who is going to keep clean sheets and win us points through good keeping and organising his defence and area. Sadly thats definitely not Carson (at least not yet.)
Villan444
I had high hopes for Carson but I'm beginning to wonder. I guess he is still very young. However the bottom line is clean sheets. When was the last time we kept one? I honestly can't remember. That's not acceptable.

avfc48 ... you're not having one of your happier days today, me thinks ;-)

2m is well worth a punt on this guy, American keppers always seem very level headed. Carson is not a 10m keeper, Liverpool cant think the same either. Carson is worth taking but for 5m max.
son_of_cher
Right last season we had 11 cleen sheets, which is quite good cos we had a very average record drawing season. This season we have had 7 clean sheets so far which really is not very good and a testament to our free scoring this season that we are in 6. Another one for you statto's 12 games since las tcleen sheet. He's just not any good! what does everyone else think

Always seems too far out to me (although I know nothing about being a keeper), which makes it more difficult (I presume) to stop the long shots. Doesn't seem the most agile keeper around.
Beovilla
I don't rate carson. I can't help wondering sorensen has been unfairly reduced to nothing at villa. He certainly wasn't any worse than carson.

"the epitome of a pathetic villa story in my view" - what the heck does that mean av? Do you mean JPF's story/writing is crap, or do you mean you think no other Prem Club would have had this problem with the Home Office? Would you like to enlighten us all as to what you really mean by that statement, just so we can't misunderstand you?
BobTheBuilder
yep we are after an american keeper who know one seems to know much about hope yours turns out alright too

This is one that I cant quite understand. Surely the same criteria will apply in the summer with regards to the guy receiving a work permit, as was applicable in January? Guzan has apparently not received enough international caps for the USA to allow him to receive a permit. They are the conditions that currently apply, and they are not going to change between now and June/July, are they?

I'm not sure about Carson, I don't think he is a £10 million keeper. I think MON feels he isn't as good as originally thought either.
notthedougellisstand
I think the work permit panel have a little more discretion than lead to believe. If it's a group of people who cast a vote, it would indicate there's a little room for decision making either way. I'm sure MON wouldn't waste his time on applying again if it really was that cut and dry.
johnnyuk
MON is in the papers today saying that he doesn't know whether Liverpool will let Carson will be allowed to come full time. Very shrewd man in not giving anything away.
Villan444
I don't think anyone can realistically doubt his shrewdness, it's whether it's always the right way to go that people take issue with. It interesting with the different noises coming from the clubs. If we pay £10million for what we've seen so far, I'll be disappointed. Improvement please, Mr Carson.
Carlosio
Not being a Carson fan, I'd be happy to see another keeper bought in at a much lower price. He sounds good from the reports I have heard.
