'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Good God, A Happy Villa Fan

I thought I'd give my opinion on the recent happenings at VP and the sort of response it seems to be getting.

Basically, I don't understand how no matter what happens, Villa fans on the whole (and I'm not trying to point the finger, I'm guilty of it too) just cannot be happy.

Yes, MON could have bought more in the transfer window. Yes, some of our players might not have lived up to the hype (which we generate for them) in recent matches. Yes, we probably haven't played our best of late.

But all of sudden it appears this means we are going backwards, we're crap, MON needs to go, Lerner doesn't know what he's doing, we're no good, we should do better.

So let's look at some facts.

We are 6th in the league.

We are above a team who spent far more than we did this year. In fact we're above a number of teams who have spent more than we have.

We have 5 players in the latest England squad.

We have 5 players in the latest England squad, 4 of which are not yet 23 years old.

The captain of Bulgaria is by far and wide not our best player at the moment, says something of our other players doesn't it?

We have a chairman who doesn't just chuck a load of money in without really bothering, who could turn sour at any minute and mess things up. We have a chairman who is listening to the fans who want things like the Holte done up, who we've got after we moaned and moaned that we wanted a chairman to listen to the fans - yet for some reason now he is 'not concentrating on buying players, just making meaningless gestures'

We have one of the most sought after managers in Europe. If MON leaves us, is he more likely to go to Man Ure or Bolton? You decide.

We've just been beaten for the first time in *9* games.

There is absolutely no way we are heading backwards, even if we are not heading as quickly forwards as some might like.

For the first time I can remember in years, people are talking about US being the team to break the top 4, talking of US as culturing exciting, young talent, talking about US playing pacy, exciting, attacking football, linking US with bigger name players than I've seen in a long time.

We're not in any debt.

We have players who want to play for the manager and each other.

So the way I see it, you can stick pessimistic threads up your Doug Ellis, I am proud to be a Villa fan and proud of the way things are going. The very fact all this is true and we are angry we are not doing better sums up to me that we are in a very healthy position. We will do better, so let's show some damn support!

Up the Villa.

good stuff angelgabriel...i think most people were annoyed at the weekend because of a poor performance against a side who are in the bottom three and below blues for gods sake but you win some and you lose some. Sending kevin keegan home unhappy at the weekend would make my year.

Well put, angelgabriel. I feel that the positives for this season far outweigh the negatives. Yes, there has been disappointment and frustration, but we have been far worse in previous seasons. This season I have looked forward to games rather than dreading them.
SuperTommyJohnson
Yeah it is a building processs and my god we are doing well, just frustrating that when you see a performance against chelsea you know what the team can do. Against fulhum billy the badger was the best performer in the Villa half!
krisvilla
claret and blue tinted specs if you ask me!
merlin
Oh merlin, you chuckle-mongerer. Also, Super Tommy Johnson! Classic!

spot on.....keep the faith....

Well said. After the doom and gloom in the aftermath of the loss at the weekend us fickle Villans need cheering up. Hopefully the loss will give us a kick up the backside and we won't rest on our laurels and will realise that there is a lot of work to be done before the season ends. European football is by no means a formality and from 5th last week, we are only 3 points from 10th place...... UTV

I've been disappointed by the lame cup performances the most. Lack of European football is killing us too. Apart from that its been a great season.
tarzan
So its not all doom and gloom then?
young_jonah
Well said for some reason like all clubs I guess we have a small section of fans who would moan at anything and whatever happens its not good enough. You could have added more like the number of goals we score, the best fans, even those who moan, the best away support, and some cracking matches like 2 four four draws. I agree with Super Tommy this year you look forward to match day in the past its been more like a punishment for something we had done wrong.

well said angelgabriel its been a tremendously exciting season so far,the team has given me plenty of highs this season and MoN didn't leave to manage England.I think there is a too much pressure on Villa to get Europe this season it was crucial that we competed and thus far we've done that. The squad will be strenghend in the summer.Onwards and upwards.

I've never been so positive about the future than I am right now (well maybe I was slightly more positive before we lost on Sunday - 0.0001% more positive!!)

Here here angelgabriel - you're absolutely spot-on. The glass is half full, not half empty. I've supported Villa since the glory years, and the subsequent years of decline, misery and false dawns - as I'm sure a lot of us here do. It's hard to shake off a negative attitude towards your club when you've suffered through two decades of abuse. But I am absolutely totally 100% behind the new regime - I think they're walking the walk instead of just talking the talk. Minor hiccups like Fulham aside, the results on the pitch and in the league table says it all. It's gonna take time before we can *seriously* challenge Man U, Arsenal or Liverpool, but if things keep going the way they are, we *will*. Notice I didn't mention Chelsea. Mehehe.

I don't think a lot of it is moaning - just challenging why should we accept a 7th or 8th finish this year as 'adequate progress' within the concept of a 5 year plan. From a position of strength in the league throughout this transfer window, we've let a real opportunity slip to sign some decent players, push on and cement that - really giving us the best opportunity to secure a UEFA spot. We should be looking to do better, and not just settle for where we are. The signs are there after the performance against Fulham that unless we continue to stay relatively lucky and injury free, we may find ourselves slipping down the table and out of the European spots pretty damn quickly. This in itself would be a disaster (whatever anyone says), as then we're back to square one in the summer - unable to attract the supposed 'real quality' we seem to be wanting but not getting. We really missed an opportunity in my book in respect of some of the players that were out there to take us up a notch (and before anyone asks me to name them, review the list - there were at least half a dozen). So it's not whinging - it's genuine concern and disappointment - we all care about what happens with the club, and some of us express it in different ways...but I think all we are asking for is NOT to settle on our laurels, and NOT to miss any golden opportunities when they get presented to us. However, I think (Routledge aside...good signing) in this window we've appeared to have done exactly that. Really hope it doesn't come back to haunt, I really do. Here's to battering the barcodes! UTV.

We didn't win a game that we should have but then no wins every game that they should or the big four would only ever drop points to each other. The trick is to win the majority of games that you should and se what you can get out of the others

Great article. MR FEAR - we need more articles from people like angelgabriel and benham. They are a nice and welcome change from the misery that has been posted up until now.
gmvillan
I'd suggest articles from both sides of the fence are whats needed. Why do some people think it's only their opinion that matters and dont have time for other peoples?
DeanoVilla
A nice, positive article. You should have a word with av48.
gwyllum18
Some valid comments made angelgabriel. An upbeat, interesting article, one that certainly meets with my 100% approval, for what thats worth. Deano's right though, we should welcome articles written from both sides of the fence, and take them both at face value.
glensider
