Gabby Out Of England Match

We were all worried about injuries with such a quiet transfer window, and Gabby is now out of the England match.

The striker was subbed half way through todays match against Fulham after sustaining a hamstring injury. I'm sure we all realise it's unlikely that he will recover quickly, although we should be counting our lucky stars that we now have an international break which should limit the damage.

Martin O'Neill has spoken out on the official site and said that although there is no way Gabby can actually play in the friendly, he is hoping the player can still travel with the England team nontheless.

'Gabby is feeling his hamstring at the moment.

'He came out before the start of the second half to try and see if it was OK. But he was still feeling it.

'There was no point risking it any further.

'I would like him to join up with the full England squad if both medical departments (Villa and England) agree. That would be nice for him but there's no way he can play.'

Today seemed to go from bad to worse, and the cynic in me wants to have it on record I said that selling Cahill would be a mistake, especially if the overriding concern on loaning him again was he couldn't be recalled as Curtis Davies is also crocked.

'Curtis has hurt his knee and we will be assessing it further.'

Have to agree re: Cahill, and as much as i loved the lad at villa i was shattered to see him get MOM for bolton on the weekend. the ******** in me kind of wants to see selling Cahill justified Similar to steven Davis, but i know it wont be. and it typical know that the window has past that our players are starting to drop like flies, as you siad the internationals couldn't have come at a better time, hopfully the injuries are not bad and thats the end of them.

But Cahill was 5th choice at centre back and we only have 1 injury which might not be serious so where does he fit in.

So thats Gabby, Davies and Bouma out vs Newcastle! If only we had recently had a chance to add to the squad we would be ok! errr.... oh hang on....

Is it controversial to be thinking that the full England call up for Gabby is too much too soon? He has something like 1 goal in 13 odd games (I really must look it up today) and although he is fast, he hasn't YET got a fast footballers brain. He is a great prospect but in days gone by, you had to be more than a prospect to get the call up didn't you? Same with Curtis Davies, he has only just started playing regularly for us, so how does that get you into the England reckoning? Not being mardy, just if these were players from other teams, would we be so impressed with them being called up? ie without our claret and blue tinted specs?

Not good enough any way, replaced by a better man

Gabby's strike record is interesting in that over the season and a half he has been a regular he has played half of his matches at least as a winger. I don't know how many games he has started as a striker and what his ratio is. Gabby is developing fast I think his technique is improving all the time. My guess is that Capello is looking to see who will play in Africa in 2010 and Gabby with his current rate of development could be there. Gabby also has the advantage of being able to play in more than one position which the other candidates generally don't have. Cahill was MON'S 5th choice and although I don't rate Cahill as highly as others I would have him higher than 5th but as you say MON is the boss.

Think that national managers like to play lots of players from the same team as they have bonded, know each others runs, and their club manager has already done half their job for them. Sven started with Arsenal Goalie and defence, Manure midfield and Liverpool attack. Much too soon for Gabby. He has looked tired recently anyway and needs to learn some skills and to look up more.

hope he recovers quickly for his and the national sides sake!

Worrying times At B6. A must win game on the horizon, and injury worries clouding the picture. Going to be a nail-biting few days. Good luck Gabby, speedy recovery.

JF, I'm with you 100% on this one. Gabby isn't ready for an England call up, not in my opinion anyhow. He's far from the finished article, and has been selected at a time when he's clearly struggling. Obviously Don Fabio rates him highly, and thats all that matters, but I think his call up has come a little to early. We shall see.
