Will Villa Match Pompey's Spurs Bid?

Sketchy reports are suggesting that Spurs have accepted a bid from Portsmouth for England international striker Jermain Defoe.

The striker, linked to Villa for a season and a half would obviously have to agree terms.

His contract ends in 2009 and so far he has failed to agree a new deal with Spurs which led to Spurs boss Juande Ramos apparently saying he could leave.

Wonder if Villa are in the hunt and if so, will we now also slap in a similar bid giving the player the choice of clubs?

Rumours are circulating that someone is having a medical at Villa, but then, those sort of rumours would circulate wouldn't they? I've certainly not been able to get any confirmation if anyone is at Bodymoor.

The transfer window doesn't close until 12 midnight, so maybe still time for a twist and turn? What would you think if Defoe went to Pompey? If he stays at Spurs I'd not be bothered but if he was allowed to leave and we didn't grab him, I'd be miffed, as he could shoot us into the top four in my ever so humble opinion!

It could however be the case that Villa, or more specifically Martin O'Neill, never wanted Jermain Defoe and that it was all paper talk from the start.

Funny old game!

Well if we were linked to him offically then what an idiot he is going to Pompey. No disrespect to them they are a good side but they are limited really, why would he go there over Villa? Maybe MON wouldnt pay the price for him, it would be good if villa got chimbonda, defoe, i'd be happy with that jan window
krisvilla
hang on 5 players in the England squad, surely if you want to have an international career you'd go to Villa now. That would be a great leverage to get Defoe. I wouldn't think Pompey is a place where Defoe would go....... I wouldnt be surprised if Villa didnt get anyone else you know thats it. 2million profit in the transfer window
krisvilla
Pompey are paying the big bucks - look at Diarra's comments when he joined them for a measley 65k per week. Makes you sick. Isn't Defoe's agent the same one as Sol Campbell's? We should bid for Benjani.
tarzan
...come on Villans !...do us favour !..If Defoe doesn't come to Pompey then we get to hang on to Benjani (Redknapp's been drinking again).
Toronto4Pompey
We'd better be in then hunt for him ! need a forward who can score goals !
crosswesleyanchapel
no, really, take him! it is being suggested that benjani would be a make wait for the deal,i i simply couldnt see him leave! if thats true, then he is all yours! And true, you might have 5 players in the england squad - deservedly so (for most of them...the ones i can think of) - but we have 2, AND,we dont exactly have quite as many english layers as you do, do we...
pompeycarpet
I have come on this site and defended MON and the lack transfer action. However, if we dont make a play for Defoe I will be extremely disappointed. He appears to be available and is a proven Premiership goalscorer. FFS go get him.
notthedougellisstand
pompey are not spending big though. its been one in one out for every deal we have done... so dont blaim our cash!
pompeycarpet
I think MON will match the fee and then it will be down to how quickly Jermain can get from Villa or Pompy to London to be out on a Saturday night....
melski
He's totally overrated. You lot have a good thing going on right now and Villa players seem to finally click. Bring this guy in and it could poison the dressing room. If he's not gnashing someone's ear, he's sulking.
Toronto4Pompey
We should bid for Benjani!!!!! He's better. I love these ballastic threads.
tarzan
Yeah, it's going to be a big loss for us if he leaves.
Toronto4Pompey
but please take him!!! i am panicking now about the possible loss of benjani. you getting defoe would ease my worries!
pompeycarpet
YES, benjani is better, NO please dont bid for him!!!
pompeycarpet
Pompey are showing great ambition, and good luck to them. MON is VERY prudent, but he knows what he is doing. If he WANTS Defoe, the transfer fee won't be a problem. Wages might, though. Villa were not prepared to pay as big wages for Diarra as Pompey. MON wants people who want to play for the shirt, not just the dollar. Very old fashioned, I now, but still plaudible, AND, he isn't doing too badly is he?
krfeskivilla
but diara clearly does want to play for the shirt with us - he has put in bags of effort for us already, and he is about the only suitable replacement for matty taylor!
pompeycarpet
True enough. I don't think MON would put up with any petulant strikers either. Arry seems to think he can work his old magic on Defoe. I'd rather he didn't bother and keep Benjani, a player with an outstanding attitude, even if he does miss the odd opp for goal.
Toronto4Pompey
p.s. Can we please borrow Patrik Berger for a few weeks...promise to give him back in good condition once we sign Gutierrez in the summer
Toronto4Pompey
We should bid for Benjani!
tarzan
" should have " you mean...it's said he now has his Citeh work permit....what a waste. Looks like that gnashing pygmy Defoe is on his way to the south coast after all...DOE !
Toronto4Pompey
Toronto... you can have Berger for a few weeks but unfortunately he is in a few pieces to start with, so if you give him back in one piece we would be happy.
Hoss The Villain
Still, he's good when he is one piece isn't he ! By the way, hope Wayne Routledge works out. When he played for us, it always seemed as if he was on the verge of a break out. Terrific speed.
Toronto4Pompey
Didn't Diara say he was going to leave you as soon as an offer came from one of the top four? or something along those lines anyway. I've got a good feeling about this one, in a few hours Defoe will be named as our 4th choice striker. Might have a job getting ahead of Marlon tho.
PTP
I think Defoe will make a massive difference to whichever club he goes to, could be THE difference for Europe.
The Fear
I believe that too Mr Fear. We have scored a lot of goals from set pieces this year, about half of them I think. So having Defoe in the team will give us that extra momentum to maintain our current position and hopefully push us further. With Liverpool looking dodgy at the moment this has to be our big chance to beat the rest to 4th spot. Come on MON make this happen.
Hoss The Villain
Oh... and find us a RB please. We have 5 1/2 hours to go so to you that is the whole transfer window.
Hoss The Villain
If this story is true and pompey and spurs have agreed a fee i, personally will be very, very disappointed if Villa don't at least match pompeys bid and have talks. Signing Defoe would make this whole transfer window worthwhile!!!
MattUTV
I'm with you, but as fear said ,Martin O'Neill's perceived interest in Defoe is just that, perceived. I want him, you do, but does our manager. If not, then why would he bid. *sigh* it's all too much to take.
Carlosio
I've just read that MON is in London tying up a deal to bring Darren Bent to VP????? or is he enquiring about Defoe????
gappy65
I cant understand why Pompey are prepared to Benjani in the first place it sounds like madness to me.... But what do I know????
gappy65
Bad attitude, bad influence, bad hairdo, no thanks.
Villan444
gappy65; i just read the same thing dude.
Stig
PTP - you're right. Diarra said somethign along the lines of "i will not be playing for portsmouth forever, they know that, this is just till I move to a big club" I would have told him to F off right then and there if i was a pompey fan. Idk what harry is thinking letting go of benjani for players like milan baros, who sucks donkey dick.
los_angeles_villan
Benjani is at his peak & thou many of our fans love him for his work rate he can't get much better. I'd rather have both but I'm happy to have Defoe in.
storagematt
defoe is past his peak, benjani is playing amazingly well (4th in the actim index!!!). i would not swap them. diara DID say that if a top 4 club came in, he would move, but lets be honest, who wouldnt? Sulley muntari addmiteed he had been supporting pompey for a year whilst at udineese, and yet when he arrived, he sai that if man u came in, he would leave. the same aplies to most players - if the oportunity to play for a big club, and win trophies came in, they would move on. its a part of football, and we have to get over it.
pompeycarpet
Am sure that Muntari heard of Pompey years ago, was a regular at Fratton shed and supported them as a kid etc. but there are players out there who show loyalty. I think that MON puts faith and trust into these players so they think that they owe him or at least don't want to let him down and he gets his return by their performances. If their attitude is wrong he will get rid or make them suffer in the reserves like Sorensen.
Villan444
Some numpty on the BBC Sport website says "my mate knows Darren Bent and reckons he's joining Villa on loan until the end of the season"....... My mate this my mate that.....
nottinghamvillain
Defoe is past his peak? He's 25?
villavillavilla
benjani is a player that puts 110% in for us every week, and has only yesterday stated he would like to end his career at the club. today, he is being linked with a move away from the club, i cant understand harrys values, as it is looking like we are selling one of/the best centre forward (on form)in the premiership, that has commited himself to pompey, and we are going to get a grumpy spurs supporting lazy centre forward. not good for us.
pompeycarpet
Yeah, but in fairness, nottinghamvillan, my mate knows Arsene Wenger, and he was gutted that blues and newcastle didn't come asking. Sometimes, these things are true, y'know.
Carlosio
villavillavilla - i have a very low opinio of him...if he is as lazy as he is at 25, then he will be awful in a coulple of years!!!
pompeycarpet
sorry about the spelling there!
pompeycarpet
looks like that is it, we've missed out on him (can we assume MON never wanted him and it was just paper talk?) as Defoe has just told a reporter he is moving to Pompey. Hmmm. :o(
The Fear
I'm sorry but this is really strange. Benjani is mustard, has gone straight to Citeh and they've replaced him with an inferior player. Martin doesn't want him, never wanted him, good on him. We are better off keeping Luke Moore.
tarzan
True enough tarzan, true enough.
Toronto4Pompey
I hope we are not in the market for Defoe we already have better, in any case he wouldn't come to us Gabby would be his competition and he is just starting his international career as a striker while Defoe's sems to be stalling or rather never really got going. Strange move by Pompey though Benjani is a far better player.
daveldvilla
agree dave - this is very strange move by us, and i just cant convince myself it is what i want. i am dissopoited to see beji leave.actually, thats an understatement,a s words can sum uo how i feel about it!
pompeycarpet
Defoe is a better player than Benjani. Defoe has performed well and scored goals for the last 3/4 years. Benjani has scored goals just this season and was poor for pompey last year. If I was a Pompey fan I would be ecstatic
notthedougellisstand
If we let this talented kid go to a rival for the 4th spot, then I'd consider it a failure of the clubs management.
evoflash
Could be a masterstroke. Portsmouth replace a player that has settled in well and is scoring for fun with a a player looking for a big pay day and 65k a week. Good chance other Portsmouth players wont be happy.
tarzansbrother
Hope you're right.
evoflash
"[benjani] was poor for pompey last year" - no, he wasnt. he was a great player, and whilst his goal scorring record never really shone through, he worked so hard for the team. this season, he isnt actually scorring for fun. half his goals have come in just 2 games (and another 2 in one game). we dont have him to score goals - or rather didnt have him - we had him to creat them.
pompeycarpet
how on earth can Match the bid - without any money ?
graydon
Harry has this one locked down, been telling Defoe how he and his scouse missus can go down the seaside with their buckets and spades in the summer, and he can still be 40 mins from London....I am sure MON would have put the feelers out,but MON is building a team based on comaradary and getting players to grow up together as a team.Harry wants the best he can get and will wheel and deal, the way he always has.Oh Well, another tranfers window fades into nearlies, or could have beens. All in all... in MON we trust.UTV
OneloveVilla
Pompeycarpet, last time I checked Benjani is a forward, therefore he is in the team to score goals
notthedougellisstand
pompey good to have someone on the the thread who appreciates Benjani's quality, WHY has Harry sold him? Closed shop I reckon, no coincidence that Everton have been shut out too. I'm a big one for conspiracy theories, but I think the top 4 control the market and the others won't sell to major rivals. There's no way Spurs would sell Defoe to us.
tarzan
we are a ******** joke
wislor
Benji has done well for us, but Defoe is the next level, by the wat Routledge will sling in the crosses, when he was with us he was top assist man
paultsmouth
I think he wanted to play for Happy Harry. Less competition at Pompy.
col8
Great to hear someone say something good about Routledge!
DeanoVilla
Very disappointed that we've missed out on Defoe. Cant quite understand why, or how. Maybe MON wasn't interested in the guy, and its all been media speculation. Would in my opinion have been a great signing, someone we desperately need the likes of.
glensider
Now it seems that Defoe is only actually there on loan, so is still officially a Tottenham player. Time for us to move on anyway, its obvious to all I think, that for whatever reason, Defoe will not be a Villa player.
