Marlon Harwood - Good On You!

Marlon Harewood.

Good on you son! I really do salute the chap, his performance as a sub tonight was great, he came on with a point to prove and turned the game for us.

The reason why he has really impressed me is he must have seen that he didn't exactly come here with a fanfare of approval from us Villa fans - no disrespect to him was meant I don't think, just we'd expected 'big' signings.

Not only that but he has hardly been given a chance and at times hasn't even made the bench.

But have you seen him complain or talk to the press even once?

No. He has put his head down an got on with it. Apparently he has had a few chances to go out on loan but he has said he is determined to make his mark and prove himself at Villa.

Again, Marlon Harewood.

Good on you son.

(Note to self, you old git, never thought I'd see myself call someone else son, unless of-course I had a son, then fair enough, but as I don't, get a grip!!)

winning the player of the game vote by a landslide at the moment!
The Fear
Amen! The goal was spectacular (thank goodness for random websites!), and he really changed the match. I hope he gets more chances to make a difference for Villa...
villabrownie
Really pleased for him. Like you say has never once moaned despite being given very little backing from the fans and even MON hasn't had much faith in him - until tonight. He definitely turned the game for us. We deserved nothing from that game but Marlon rescued a point. Just a shame Gabby didn't pass....
Adam Deuce
I have to say I hate the lad, this goal means nothing, but its the enthusiasm i did like, right from when he ran on the pitch i want to see desire and passion on the pitch, props to him but please everyone get a grip he's not worthy of a permanent start, i would start hiom against blackburn as gabby needs a break or for Carew Moore needs to go unless he shows this sort of desire soon
shortshadyuk
Bit harsh there slim shady... Anyone who scores goals and rescues a point for the villa against a top team is worthy of wearing a villa shirt. Not sure where you get your definition on good/bad player or why you hate him but tis definitely harsh.
johnnyuk
I doth the proverbial cap off to him, well done, like evryone I dont think he is good enough but looks srong and powerful and scored a cracking goal. Hope he keeps proving me wrong, cos MON gets the best out of average players. I think Uefa next season we are very resilliant, even when playing terrible.
krisvilla
I agree with johnnyuk two seasons ago Harewood destroyed at upton park and scored goals all season for West Ham you don't become a bad player and he will come good for us. His attitude is great no moaning he just works hard, and waits for his chance. We have others who if a first team place isn't given they sulk and want transfers because they feel they need to play. Give me Marlon anyday
daveldvilla
Definately Harewood was my MOM. He looked hungry, held the ball well and looked a real threat. I think Gabby needs a rest, as does the ref, as he was not up to standard required! Very frustrating to see us work so hard to win the ball, only to consisitantly give it away. Thought we missed Barry. However, overall i agree with MON that it was a fair result and good away point.
Nigel-not-Reo
Sign of how we have progressed. IMO this was our worst performance for a long time yet we come away from Anfield with a point and very nearly three. Gabby, JC and Ashley were anonymous, but Marlon definitely made a big big difference when he came on. Defensively we were sound. Unlucky spin on ball for first goal and a rare ML mistake for second BUT our distribuition from full back is so poor. Gardner and Petrov were average but I thought NRC have a fine game. We badly missed GB and also to a degree Shaun aloney. This just serves to show how light the squad is and how lucky we have been with injuries to key players. Not long to rectify this MON as we can't guarantee being so lucky with no injuries to the end of the season.Overall though, very good progress being made.
krfeskivilla
he came on and put some fire in our bellys he was also playing to prove many people wrong including myself hope he gets a start on saturday and if he can play like that again i would be one of the first to say welcome marlon harewood to aston villa fc
claretandblue
'I have to say I hate the lad' says shortshadyuk. Jeez, that is sad, so sad. Hate shortshadyuk? I'm not sure how old you are, but do you really know what 'hate' actually is? A Villa supporter commenting like that about a Villa player makes very sad reading indeed. Pathetic.
glensider
well said Glensider

i think Marlon was really awesome - sad to say when he came on i remembered many comments on this website abt how bad he was, but i really wanted him to score last night and prove so many wrong. i reaqlly hope he is given more of a chance, before marlon came on i really thought we were woeful. any one who shows his passion gets my thumbs up. i swear if Carew had half that passion he would have been on double his goal tally. i am just so proud we never lost to liverpool though.
Pablo1978
He did look hungry! Great goal. Reo-Coker ran his ass off all game as well, though.
gwyllum18
Marlon Harewood deserves all the praise we can heap on him. In a very lacklustre performance, Villa needed someone to kick them into life and as said on here by others, his "Come on - Let's go get them" attitude did the trick. Never moans, always gives 100% (albeit not very effectively at times) and given a chance, I think he can still become in our eyes, the player Martin O'Neill saw whan he bought him
godzvilla
We didn't even look like scoring until he graced the pitch with his prescence and he crossed a ball and scored a goal in the space of 2 mins which had them really worried. On this performance and the shocker that Gabby had, I think he HAS to be given a chance to prove himself or otherwise. I was one of his biggest critics after the Spuz game but that is the right sort of atitude to prove everyone wrong. Single handedly changed the boring attacking play that we had and the whole game.
Villan444
Unfortunately, all i've seen of the game is the goals. Can I ask how Taylor performed? He was immense on the opening day of the season, and really looked like he was capable of proving people wrong. Did that continue, or not?
Carlosio
Taylor was very solid - as he also was in the home fixture against Liverpool and the away game at Bolton. He's never let us down and has remained very professional during his time at the club. Some fans said they were extremely nervous about staring with him last night but I think we have one of the best back-up GKs in the league and never have any qualms about seeing him play. Like Marlon, perhaps he typifies the mentality within the squad at present - though he may not be playing regularly, he hasn't complained once and clearly wants to be part of Aston Villa and is willing to try and make the best of the opportunities that he does get when they come along.
Alec
Spot on article. Hats off Mr Harewood.
evoflash
I'll assume it was worth the wait?
storagematt
My opinion on Marlon has gone way up following his contribution in last night's match - as soon as he ran on to the pitch, he was bawling at the lads to step up a gear so you could see he was up for the fight. I don't think anybody expected an overhead kick though! Great goal but not his only contribution - prior to scoring he put a great low cross into Carew's feet which he unfortunately couldn't score from. Well done Marlon! That said, I'd have to give my MOM vote to Nigel Reo-Coker - considering that we were without the influential Barry, I thought NRC was phenomenal. Used his strength well, won a LOT of tackles and didn't do his usual trick of getting caught on the ball too often - not only that, but I don't think he got booked for once either!!! :-)
jeffg_utv
Young misses the game against Fulham with a Yellow Card.
KSarge1
Now i don't want to sound like a Liverpool supporter and write Fulham off, but if I was aloud to pick a game for young to miss, this one would be high on the list.
Carlosio
Fair play to Marlon, he got his chance and he took it. And I agree that Taylor is most definetly one of the best 2nd choice keepers in the league.
UpTheHolte
The goal was good, but the attitude and enthusiasm was amazing....we were drifting towards a whimpering loss until Marlon came on and showed how it show feel to walk out onto the Anfield pitch in your Villa shirt. Never mind starting him against Blackburn - make him captain ;)
GCR_villlan
The captain idea is not as daft as it may initially sound. Does anyone else remember former Warwickshire cricket captain Dermot Reeve? Not the most talented player but inspirational and captained the side in its most successful seasons ever in 1994 and 1995 winning a total of 5 (out of a possible 8) trophies and reaching the final of a 6th tournament (Nat West Trophy 1994). A feat that, to my knowledge, has not been emulated since. An inspirational captain is often worth more than an inspirational player like Laursen. Barry is not far of both of course but in his absence.........
Villain Of The North
I have never had much respect for fans that critise a player before they have even been given a chance at their new club (and lets all be honest Marlon has a fair bit of critism from us lot). But glad to see that there are so many people willing to give the guy some credit, lets all hope he goes on to do really well for us. Keep up the good work Marlon!!!
young_jonah
Without Coker's and the defences performance anything Harewood did would have been superfluous That said he certainly looked up for it and again was in the right spot at the right time. I'll look to see if he gets 20 games and scores 15 goals before i rave too much though, like Petrov 1 good game in 22 isn't my idea of greatness
avfc48
I have to say a slice of humble pie (just the one) for me as althought the mighty Marlon had a cracking season for WHU a few years back his performances albeit in limited opportunities for Villa have not been brilliant, mind you he did score vs Blackburn. I have to give him credit as many have for keeping quiet , getting his hjead down and waiting for a chance, (now a young Mr Moore may have been better to do the same). I hope he gets a chance of a full game vs Blackburn and that Maloney gets a chance to replace Young vs Fulham......but no doubt our 5 new signings will get in ahead of them both !!!!
fatloser
We only started playing in the 65th minute when Marlon came on.Great attitude and desire, so he deserves a start in my eyes.Gabby on the right and Marlon and Carew up front. There's two big lumps for any centre half pairing to deal with. There is a lot to be said for playing woefully(worst this season, by far), only applying yourself for 25mins at Anfield and nearly winning the game.So come on Martin let's get some bodies in!!..UTV
OneloveVilla
avfc48 - I don't think people are saying Marlon's arrived just humbled that he actually had it in him! The comparison between the performance and his arrival were amazing. I read the match thread on the other forum and fans were mockingly saying Marlon would save the day - he did. And maybe if MON had took Carew off with 10 mins to go and bolstered the midfield we may have won. I went from disbelief to gobsmacked to pragmatism during that match.
Gazvilla
Hats off to Marlon. JF's comments sum up Marlon's performance admirably. He turned the game on its head.
glensider
(quick poll) do you think that Marlon looks like Dion Dublin ?
jaspervilla
NO !
The Fear
Remember Dermot Reeve well Villain of the North, good shout!
The Fear
VOTN and Fear - "It just ain't cricket is it" - especially when it comes to Marlon! Credit to Marlon - he's always fired up when he comes on and genuinely seems like he wants to do well for us...
bazzah
I used to go boozing occasionally with Dermot and Roger Twose - they used to go down the Student Union bar at B'Ham Uni and tap into the student lasses...they did pretty ok with the ladies unsurprisingly!
