Funny what a good night's sleep will do!
Like every dyed in the wool Aston Villa supporter who has access to a computer, these last two weeks have been torment. I was logging on at every opportunity, looking anxiously at all the reports, reading the speculation and hoping and hoping that perhaps some of the links and tie ups that have been suggested by the hacks of Fleet Street and beyond may be true. Yes, I know 95% of that which has been written is lazy journalism, sources have not been checked and reports have not been verified, but one has hopes.
Take, for instance, those reports that Jermain Defoe had been seen at Bodymoor Heath and was buying a house in Kidderminster, Lichfield or wherever. It transpires, at least according to the Sky News reports, that our beloved leader had not even spoken to the man in question let alone invited him to take up residence in the Midlands.
That report gutted me. Defoe may not be the very best, but he is the sort of player we should be looking to add to our small but very excellent band of warriors. You see, like most of you reading this, I badly want Villa to be a success again. We have had twenty five wasted years and now, at last, things are beginning to look up. We have everything in place to begin the new era - a new owner, one of the best managers in the business and a team who are playing out of their skins.
However, everyone knows that we have a very small squad and that we have been very, very lucky with injuries so far this season. The question we are all asking, subconsciously at least, is can our luck hold with regard to injuries. I keep asking myself questions like, 'What if Olof Mellberg and Craig Gardner were both injured?' for a start. Or perhaps you could perm Gareth Barry and Wilf Bouma or Big John and Gabby. You see where I'm going?
So, as I said, the report that Defoe does not appear to be on MON's radar, which, coupled to the facts that there appears to be no progress with any other signings, had me gutted and I responded. I wrote a comment that reflected my frustration. What are we doing, are there any plans for new players etc? I went to bed last night, having read the blogs on this site, full of anxieties and worries. I wondered how well I would sleep.
Surprisingly, I slept well and I woke up this morning with a new take on the situation. Hallelujah, suddenly I have hope and a radical change of attitude. I cannot now understand what I was worrying about. You see, I can't do anything about it no matter how much I worry and agitate. No not a thing, so why worry?
As I said, we, Aston Villa, that is, are paying a top class human being who is an excellent manager and motivator to do our worrying for us so, from now on I am going to leave it up to him. He knows and understands exactly how we all feel about Aston Villa. He might have joined us Villans comparatively lately, but he only had to be at Villa Park for one day to know how we all feel, particularly with the dreaded Ellis out of the way. We have hope and expectation and an undying love for a very special team. (The Barcodes supporters have nothing on us) So from now on, like a number of you on the various Vital Villa blogs, I have a new adage 'In MON we trust', I am going to keep to that and I urge all Villa supporters to do the same.
Anyway, agitating about it won't change a thing. Give Martin the chance to do the job. I really believe he knows what he is doing.
