January Transfer Window Thread Pt2

Oh dear. The second part of our transfer gossip thread, only 14 days to go and no arrivals to date!

We are being hotly linked with Jermain Defoe, apart from that there seems little in the form of gossip or expectation of imminent signings. There also seems to be talk of Gary Cahill being given permission to listen to the offer on the table from the Blues. Surely not? :o(

For part one I said:

'Ok, here we go, I've resisted temptation up until now, but what the heck. Lets get all the transfer rumours, links, wishes and gossip going again in our January Transfer window thread. During the summer we had a thread that ended up running to ten parts with nearly 4000 comments, most of them on the frustrations, lets hope this January Transfer thread will be all positive and full of arrivals.'

Lets hope that still remains the case, after all, the window doesn't shut until midnight January 31st and who can forget our last minute business in the summer when on the stroke of 12 midnight we clinched the signing of Moustapha Work Permit..... ahem, cough cough!

Not to bothered about Cahill its not as though any decent clubs want him and if this new defender we are linked with arrives he would be 5th in the order here. He wants to play can't blame him for that. Judging from MONS comments in the paper tonight I guess a right back is going to have to wait not sure about riise and barnes it seems to have gone quiet although Derby seem to have new midfielders coming in and i saw a report somewhere that they were prepared to sell.

Think back 2 years when we we're struggling in the league. We could only see us going further down with O'Leary and Ellis and then imagine we are 6th in league, level on points with fourth place and have a very good manager and a Chairman who doesn't make stupid comments and provides money from his own pocket. Baptista of Madrid is linked to us and Man City (News of TW). Where do these links come from???????? As for Owen and his injuries.... MON sorted Laursen out by allowing him to choose his own training programme as did Big Ron with McGrath. when he plays he still has alot to offer and as for Fatlosers comments about the Bolton game, the Toon are so bad no-one would have much of a chance. Don't know about Doyle, could be a risk. As for Riise, why do we need another left sided player? Young isn't as effective on the right. We have Barry, Maloney, Berger, Young but no one to play on the right. Not even Gabby who I think MON will put there if a forward comes. Could be 4th very soon so MON aint doing to bad!!!

Owen has already seen the american medical specialists, after the last world cup, and it hasn't done him much good. Laursen's surgery, on the other hand, was a complete success - the results are obvious. Don't put too much weight in the training regime, it has more to do with the corrective surgery. Owen looks like he'll never be fit again. If he was fully fit once more he'd go to one of the big four - why do you think they're not sniffing around?

All ways on the medical table. His knees and ligaments are alot worse than Laursens and it allways going to take him longer to recover. and he is going to want more than 60k a week for playing for us. saying that if he was 100% and injury free then id have im in a heart beat. The most pressing matter was getting laursen on a contract. DONE. Now a RB and a RM and we are sorted! Sriker would be nice bit we seem to be scoring well at the moment. It`ll be another case of more out than in. Even if we do manage to get one player at 2 minutes to midnight on the 31st (normal) I gaurentee we`ll still be down on numbers in an already thin squad.

KSarge1- General Krulak has confirmed time and time again, both on this site and other fans' sites that O'Neill has Randy Lerners total financial support and there is absolutely no limit whatsoever on how much he spends either on transfer fees or players' wages. However I suspect O'Neil is on some form of financial performance based pay structure so he will treat Lerner's money just as if it were his own. That Lerner sure is a "cute cookie".

Add to that how much experience the likes of Hoyte and Denilson have gained it was pretty much Arsenal's strongest side, and we completely destroyed them. But to the point - realism...MON saying At this minute, getting what we`d call a recognised right-back is a thought but it`s not as overwhelming as you think... well? Isn't it? Yes Mellberg has done the job, but it just got me thinking well what is a priority? The whole team is playing well so does that mean we need no-one? Ok, he has got his targets but if he can't get them and randy is saying money isn't the issue can't we just go get some nice versatile players? Matty Talyor can play most places on the left and quite like the look of Ryan Talyor on the right (and both can shoot!) Just get a Utility man to cover as many places as poss and worry about the rest in the summer... I mean where would we be if Mellberg or Bouma had been injured, Barry at left back is fine but as you could see on monday we need him in the middle...ok rant over...

I'm not doubting the pull that Villa can have on players, you are an attractive proposition for any player; Europe almost guaranteed, bright future and a top manager. But playing at Wembley is something every player dreams of and is, in itself, a big attraction. These Hutton rumours re-surfaced the day after we qualified for the final, Berbatov looking like he might stay past the summer etc. I agree with you to an extent that Spurs are not the most attractive of teams at the moment but I feel confident in saying that Juande Ramos will change that. Spurs were a laughing stock for many reasons at the start of the season, ie league position and the s*** that we call our board. Slowly but surely that is changing and Ramos is getting us to play like Sevilla, hitting teams on the counter and taking our chances. Having said that, time will be the answer to alot of questions.

Forget the fact that you're languishing in lower mid-table, a full 13 points off the european places. Don't try and play the "What have villa done" card on me. Firstly, Villa fans have readily admitted for years, that we haven't achieved anything. In fact, that was a huge deal that lead to our 800million pounds worth of owner buying the club. Secondly, I'm not talking about villa now, this is purely an observation of Tottenham. Victories in the league this season have come over; Derby, Boro, Wigan, Fulham, Reading, and Sunderland as well as a good result against Pompey. Top stuff, 6 wins out of 7 against teams in the bottom 7.

It's got to be all happenning in the background....just has to be....Hutton for me would be an outstanding signing, and if that was the only body that came in, i'd be more than just ok with that. Agree that we need to seize this chance, as i'm sure we're probably ahead of where we expected to be on the infamous '5 year plan', but that doesn't mean we can't push on and get ahead of ourselves. Otherwise we risk the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, etc catching up with us again....as they seem to be getting their respective acts together. Jeeeeeez anyone that says this league isn't competitive needs their head read - ok, the top 3 are different class at the moment, and there are 4 or 5 teams who are utter pants at the wrong end of the league, but for the rest the competition is truly intense!

Chimbo is a very good RB and would get into most teams in the Premiership. However, if indeed he did say what he is 'quoted' as saying then he can f*** off. It doesn't surprise me though, all throughout his career he has seeked more and more money wherever he has been. It just shows the lack of passion, ambition and commitement that footballers have these days. Can't believe no one has this login yet! I'm really bemused by Villa in the transfer market so far. Don't get me wrong, i'm over the moon with MON. I think his ability to lead, motivate and get results is outstanding and it's been a pleasure to watch us play football since he took over as opposed to painful and nail biting like it so often was before!! But that said, i'm yet to see evidence of the 'no limit' spending power that we have. I don't want us to waste money on rubbish just for the sake of spending it like so many other teams. And i do support MON. I just find it hard to get my head around why we aren't bringing in players. Ashley Young has been a revelation but there are a lot of good players in the world who could be brought to our club to bolster the number and help us push on. I read that MON is thinking of going after a 2.2M MLS goalkeeper because he doesn't want to pay the 10M asking price for Carson. If Randy can afford to spunk 5M on an art gallery then what's 10M for a keeper who has been outstanding and is a clear future England No.1. I just think that it's really mixed messages. We have loads of money(apparently), we have a tiny squad(definitely), we're incredibly exposed to injuries(very worrying), and we're doing well enough and have a good enough manager to bring in some real class. Yet we aren't doing it. I trust MON but in 3 windows i don't think we've brought in what we should have

Good news about Mellberg although it suggests that we will have to wait until the summer for a dedicated right back. Fingers crossed everyone, this is when MON likes to do his business. 4 days left to get some good players on board. I understand ppl feeling that 10M is a bit much for Carson but the lad is 22 years old, has had a good season and is already capped for a major international side. The way the market is going i think 10M is a bargain. Van der Sar was 3M when he was 33! 10M for a keeper with 12 great years ahead of him, not bad if you ask me. It would worry me if this MLS keeper has been signed because he's cheaper. If he's better then fair enough, it's clearly a good signing. But he's unproven in a major league and if he isn't better then Carson then it's a worrying move just to save money when we have a supposed unlimited transfer kitty. John gives us that hold up big point man role, milan wud do what defo would do if he came.

Okay - I understand the idea of MON wanting this to be a "long-term plan" and not to rush things at Villa. But lets take a minute and look what's going on. Forget 6th place, we have a legit shot at champions league football! We're playing some good footie and are in 5th place with 14 games left. We have Man U and Arsenal and then the 12 other games are more than winable, granted portsmouth and everton away will be a challenge. Why not go for some big signings and give in to the January inflations? Go for that champions league football while liverpool are playing like ****e. Imagine if we got in - the players we'd attract in the summer eager to play champions league football? That's taking Villa up the ladder. I know i'm not manager and i'm certainly no MON. But does anyone else see the possibility??? Bless you MON, let's make some good out of this window, don't let us die of fatigue!

Of course they do, that's why they've all spent the last month moaning. I agree, in principal, we should go out, sign a bunch of great players and get on with finishing 4th. However, in reality, what if the best players aren't available, and what if those that are want ridiculous sums of money tht could unsettle the team, and speaking of which, what if the new players unsetlle the team, and what if dangling a blank cheque in front of a team isn't enough to sign a player, and what if.... I, like you, am no manager, so i will go ahead and let MON sign routledge, and he can live or die by his decision, so i don't have to.

God form what MON said today it looks like its not guna happen this window. What a disapointment. Surely MON and his team have been working even before the window to ensure we have back up and strength coming in, he says in the interview they have new names thrust upon them every day and it wudnt be out of the question if we sign nobody at all :'(

Taken frmo the OS Tuesday papers section and according to The Sun and The Mirror MON made last minute bids to sign Woodgate!! I find this a little strange to say the least. Surely he is too injury prone AND more importantly he's a CB and not a RB.

I'm a massive fan of MON but if we don't bring anyone in this window then i'm afraid that just isn't good enough. Work should have been going on behind the scenes before the window even opened to ensure that we had a list of players who were available and interested. We are a big club performing well with money to burn. To finish this window with less ppl than we started would be a massive error. I'm still hoping for something to happen but from the tone of MON in recent interviews it looks like if something good does happen it will be through fortune and not judgement. If the window slams shut and heaven forbid, Young, Laursen and Barry or Reocoker pick up injuries at any time in the next 4 months we will be in massive trouble. Even if we are lucky and sustain no injuries you have to say that is unneccessary risk taking. I really hope MON proves me very wrong........

Baines and Onuoha. Pay the fee, get them in a villa shirt then i'll stop moaning and whinging! There's no reason why we can't get these players. Onuoha wants first team football and should be available for around 8m and Baines would surely want to play for us and shouldn't cost too much. Should be available cheaper than ashley young. That would solve a lot of our problems

I heard Derby had rejected an offer for Barnes. It was either on SSN or Radio One News earlier today. I can't remember which club had bid but it wasn't us. They don't need cash now that they have a new owner. Premiership survival how ever unlikely is worth a hell of alot more than any realistic fee you might put on his head.

Derby need to be realistic and prepare for the championship. Barnes will be worth less once they go down and i'm sure that a push from Villa would have had him asking to talk to us. we paid Watford near to 10m for Ashley. surely 7/8 would get Barnes. I still get the feeling from MON that he's always lookign for a bargain. WHY???? What is a few million when we're talking about the possibility of European football next year

Im going for Pascal Chimbonda and Giles Barnes to come in, with Cahill and Sorenson to leave. Looks like Doyle and Riise will have to wait until the summer with their clubs refusing to release them. We have to accept we need european football to attract the top players, which hopefully we will be able to do this summer.

14 games to go this season. We don't need floods of players really. seems like things are finally happening. MON has said that he's prepared to break the bank for a superstar and that he's looking at several. Alos Routledge is supposedly about to sign and we're after a promising Rioght back from Leicester and a young striker. We're also mapparently forcing the issue with Chimbonda. I'd be happy for him to join but in the long run would like to see a more dedicated, long term signing at right back. Chimbonda is a decent player but is a mercenary

I think we should enjoy 5th whilst it lasts. Defoe could still be on the cards, if Spurs manage to line up a better option (Fred for example). I was being sarky about Hutton, I can't see why we aren't in for him either (my sources in Scotland said the deal with Spurs was agreed weeks go and the hun press is trying to placate the Rangers fans), I presume MON is staying true to his word, in that he has a price for a player; beyond which he leaves well alone (Diarra and Gordon being two examples).
