O'Neill Confirms Cahill Bids

We've all seen the speculation and the various clubs that have been linked to our centre half, and now although not commenting specifically on any clubs, O'Neill has admitted a number of bids have been put on the table for him.

No longer is it speculation, Gary Cahill is officially a wanted man.

If rumours are to be believed, we are looking for £4 million upfront, with a £1 million in add on, which to me is still too low when you compare it to what we paid for Curtis Davies.

IC Brum have linked Bolton, Wigan, Sunderland, Fulham and Derby as the likely sources of the bids, however, we all know Sheffield United have come back and I believe Derby's interest may have been a loan spell, but they already have the maximum loans in for this season, this is also what precluded them from taking Sorensen on loan from memory.

Speaking to IC Brum, Martin said:

'There is a lot of interest, more than a lot of interest in Gary at this minute.

'I have spoken to him a couple of times, and I have spoken to his agent. I'll monitor it as we go along.

'I couldn't possibly comment (on individual clubs) but I will say that there have been bids for Gary, but I am not confirming anything about the clubs.'

The sticking point for a return to Sheffield United onloan seems to be the rules, that means if he goes to them again we cannot recall him under any circumstances should we need to - a freedom we had during the initial loan spell.

'I have spoken to Bryan Robson and he would obviously want him back again.

'But if Sheffield United took him on loan, then he could not come back to us until the next window as he has already done 93 days with them.

'There are the same rules with regards to Premier League clubs as well, it goes from window to window.

'I couldn't bring him back after 28 days as I could in other circumstances.

'So there are lots of things, lots of speculation and I will be in a better position to know what is what towards the end of the week.'

Knowing what is what, is no doubt a reference to contract signings, and learning conclusively what Olof Mellberg intends to do I would imagine.

'I am in no rush to be letting people out on loans. At the end of the day with the squad I have, I am trying to bring it up a bit.

'There is still a fortnight to go and with Gary Cahill here I have options at this minute.

'With players wanting to get their own particular futures sorted at the club I am not rushing into anything.'

Is he much better than Davies - i.e. is he twice the player!! We should only consider a deal if we had BOTH Laursen and Mellberg on 2year+ contracts!!

so that probably means that he's not wanted and can leave for the right price, hope his form doesn't drop because of the specualtion

I heard he was going to blues...

Can we really afford to even consider Gary leaving, what with Olof, and indeed Martin Laursens future still very much up in the air? Surely not?

Apparantly Villa have given permission to Blues to open talks with Cahill - I'll be sad to see him go if it's a perm deal, especially to the Blues, but on the whole I can't question O'Neill's judgement so far with players
