Villa 'When We Were Kings'

ESPN Classic have an Aston Villa ‘When We Were Kings’ special starting Monday 21st January and continuing right through to the weekend.

“Believe it or not, there was a time when Aston Villa didn’t just finish somewhere in mid-table every season. Back in 1981, under ‘Sergeant-Major’ Ron Saunders, they used a grand total of only 14 players all season in blazing a trail to the League title. What’s more, they did it via an evocative, iconic goal-scoring duo; Shaw and With”.

Poor Swindon. Having been promoted to the Premiership the previous season, they lost their manager, their best defender, and their best striker.

LOL ! Poor Swindon. I live there and I remember it well. I remember the game at the County Ground that year. We won 2-1. Teale and Atkinson I believe ? Bodin for Swindon ? I also remember the FA Cup game in 1990 ? Yorke and Froggatt got the goals....

I've just checked and we've got this channel. I didn't even know. I can not wait. Might have to Sky+ them all.

Great memories, great days. When We Were Kings indeed. Still frustrates that the club was allowed to enter into decline following those halcyon days, but for now lets remember those truly memorable couple of seasons when we marched on to become domestic League Champions, and then The Champions Of Europe.

Then came the return of Ellis, discontent and neglect became rife within the club, and we hit the downward spiral...hard!!
