O'Neill On Two Footed Madness

O'Neill On Two Footed Madness

Slamming players who lead with both feet, the Villa manager has responded after a number of stories have hit the headlines and a higher than usual number of red cards have been dished out.

'I have no idea why players go in two footed, when people say 'I got some of the ball' it's a nonsense!

'Your impetus is carrying you through. You could maim someone, break someone's leg and put them out of the game for good! It's crazy.

'Even one-footed tackles can be dangerous if the studs are up.

'I don't think that's very brave - it's reckless! I obviously wouldn't be happy with our players being on the end of it - or doing it either obviously.

'The referees are getting it right. I don't know why it's crept in.

'It seems to have happened over the past few weeks but it's been hovering around for a while.

'If there's a clampdown or a mandate from high above, I've got to say I agree with it totally.'

The question is, have two footed tackles actually crept into the game, or with how the game has been dumbed down do we just notice them more now than before?

There's nothing better than a crunching, full bloodied tackle and the game is sadly now lacking that spirit with overprotective referees and overly play acting players.

But a good story nontheless, and some good quotes from our manager to fill some time before we announce our signings.

When I first read the title of this article I thought he'd gone completely bonkers and started complaining about player thinking that they can use two feet to play and being an old fashioned kind of guy he was only interested in playing players that had just one good foot and that he would be instructing Young to stop using his right foot to kick the ball. Madness I tells ya!! Madness!!

Anything will do just to stop me eating my hands. Just keep giving us stories, pile em up. Otherwise we'll end up working.

Have you ever tried dancing to Madness on 1 foot????????

I used to play in the days when 'skilful' players got no protection from either the laws of the game or from referees. I don't want football to become a non-contact sport, but I think we have to accept that the game is very, very much faster than it used to be even 10 years ago, and the consequences of two-footed challenges are correspondingly that much worse. It isn't a problem refs penalising such challenges with a straight red - providing there is consistency ...

Agree fully with MON. This two footed, studs up tackling has no place in the game, and definitely needs to be clamped down upon, and hopefully eliminated entirely from the game.

Half the problem though surely has to be the inconsistencies of freferee's on clamping down on the tackle. There's simply no consistency whatsoever.
