'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villa Can Score From Anywhere

The spread of goals throughout the team is quite a surprise really, as most fans at the start of the season would have pegged Carew down for the Lion's share and it just hasn't worked out that way.

Gabby is top with 7, Laursen and Carew are tied on 6, Maloney also has 6 in all comps, Barry 4 and Young 3.

The most surprising without a doubt is Martin Laursen's contribution.

Speaking to the Express and Star Carew said of this:

"It`s important we can score goals throughout the team. We don`t depend on one player and that`s a great asset. We`re a big, strong team and goals can come from anyone.

"I was delighted to score a couple on Saturday. Ashley put in great performance by setting up both.

"Gabby, too, was excellent. He didn`t get on the scoresheet but he did a tremendous job in creating plenty of chances.

"These two have massive talent and they`re improving in every game.

'Martin is having an unbelievable season. To score six goals from defence is incredible.

"We`re looking forward to the rest of the season. It`s an exciting time because we`re in and among the best."

"We`ve shown we deserve to be there. Reading are a difficult team to beat."

Hopefully now our fantastic start to the season will be bolstered by some signings and although it's still unlikely we will finish this high, we can give it our best shot.

Anyone putting bets on Laursen being top scorer come May?

I was thinking exactly the same the oter day and would have started a thread on the forum about it but I couldn't be arsed. We all keep calling for a top goal scoreer, mostly Defoe, but when you look at the league table only 3 teams have scored more than us, MUTD, Arsenal and Spurzzz. Perhaps Martin O'Neill doesn't concider a 20 goal a season man as a top priority when you look at the reallity of the situation.

That said, I'd still like to see Defoe at VP or even Bent when you read today's newspapers claiming that he is now available for around £12 million. I'd have some of that.

Please MON come clean and tell the world that we don't want Defoe.

Allan Evans scored 7 from central defence the last time we won The Title (he scored 10 the previous season). But Morley, Shaw and Withe scored 48 between them "that season" so we still need to up the strike rate from Young especially. And when did Gareth last score a goal from open play, he now seems reluctant to shoot.

40 goals already this season speaks for itself. I don't mind where they come from, as long as they keep coming and we defend as well as in most games. Best not to rely on one player, because they can get injured or lose form.

Like to see the midfield players weighing-in though.

We surely must be pretty damn close total wise, to the amount of goals we netted throughout the whole of last season. Definitely a plus to see the goals spread around the team, but I still feel we are lacking that clinical finisher, someone whose arrival would virtually guarantee a top six finish playing in this fairly free scoring line up.

Must admit, I for one really thought that we'd struggle for goals this season - Big Time!
