Sam Rules Out Sale Then Gets Sacked
Well, well, well.
Big Sam, the then Newcastle United boss, had all but dismissed any links for player sales from The Toon with Villa and Man City having been tipped to sing Obafemi Martins.
Allardyce said: 'We have had no contact with Villa or City about Obafemi Martins, but I can tell them - and anybody else, for that matter - that he is not for sale. In any case, I don't know how anybody can be expected to sign Martins when he is away in the African Nations Cup until the start of next month. It gets back to speculation again, which is one of the biggest distractions of the January window.' Adding, 'Not only is it speculation about what you are bringing in, but unrest can be caused to your players who people are speculating might go out. Even though there might be no truth in it, that player might think I don't want him any more and am trying to sell him, and that can be very disruptive. That's why this window is a very dangerous one indeed.'
Dangerous indeed, but no longer for Sam as Newcastle United have done what Newcastle United always do, and have sacked their manager.
Not sure whether that gives us more or less chance of signing Martins, probably less I'd guess. What a strange club, all set up with a great support but they can't choose a decent manager and when they do, they expect him to turn around their fortunes in just 6 months.
I tell you what, I'm after a slice of that pie, I'll apply for the job, do a terrible job (I like to aim high) and then get a few million as a pay off. That'll do nicely.
