Davies Wins Man-of-the-match

The man of the match vote for the Manchester United game went to Curtis Davies with 42%

Next up came the resurgent Stiliyan Petrov with 15% and Villa skipper Gareth Barry, who I thought looked tired so shows what I know, with 13%

That left:

Hokey-Cokey (12%)
Carson (9%)
Laursen (7%)
Moore (1%)
Bouma (1%)
Mellberg (0%)
Young (0%)
Carew (0%)
Agbonlahor (0%)
Gardner (0%)
Maloney (0%)

Our latest poll was suggested by Graydon and asks what you think of modern players wearing gloves. Oh yes, we like to get to the major issues in football!

Thought Laursen should have edged it due to the nutmeg for the first goal on Davies and the hospital ball to Mellberg who he should have known hasn't got the skills to create room for a pass if there isn't an easy one on.

Agree in part 444 - but NRC got my vote. He was everywhere, breaking up the midfield. Andersons second run was stopped by him, giving Bouma time to make the tackle. It's like Makelele - nobody notices, but you miss it if he isn't there. STill, Davies does look like he could be another good buy after an indifferent start. How does MoN know?
CLVilla
Davies played 1 game for us before this spell and played poorly. His comments about being a pub player must have been reproduced in the media 40 times, to the extent I got sick of it. However, I don't think its fair to call it an indifferent start - I think he has had an awesome start and may be a future England star.

The lad is pure class, how you can pick out that as a nutmeg? and mark it against him? He and no other player in the world could have stopped that ball, just one of those things. Talk about nit picking, yes Reo-Coker was very good.
KSarge1
Been chuffed of late with Davies, Coker and Petrov. On the downside Gabby, Ashley and our Gareth have not been at their best. Lot of games though and they must be tired mentally and physically.
Gazvilla
KSarge, I did only say edged it. Can't deny that he is looking as good as was promised and he has only had 3 proper games in the last 18 months so expect him to get much better. Laursen was as good as normal but we have become used to his immense displays so maybe took for granted.
Villan444
Very impressed with Davis. I have abosolutely no doubt that he will be an England star. His reading of the game reminded me of (dare I say?) Paul McGrath. KSarge1, I totally agree that a nutmeg like that could easily have happened to the very best.
Nigel-not-Reo
Maybe the Nuts was nit-picking but I still think that if he had cleared the ball when they had a lot of players around us (rather than playing the ball to Mellberg) then we would not have conceded. I know Wilf and even Carsson could have cut it out. Other than that he was quality though and much better than Zat.
Villan444
The goal was a direct result of not having a bespoke Right Back. Mellberg didn't clear properly, and when Giggs got the ball back where was he? He hadn't got back into position, leaving Giggs far too much time. Davies couldn't really help the ball going between his legs - it was too late by then.
CLVilla
Written off by some before he'd even drawn breath (FatKev where are you?), its good to see Curtis now showing definite signs that we have a quality player on our hands. Stan Petrov receiving the plaudits too. Hallelujah!!!

I'm always amazed at how quickly we fans expect players to slot into a prem side, when history (at VP and every other club) tells us that it frequently takes time, and often a LOT of time. We have to show patience and keep behind ALL our players - not just the ones we fancy before they arrive.
BobTheBuilder
Too true BobTheBuilder. Trouble is we all fancy ourselves as experts, top notch judges of players and their abilities. Truth is, we are all far, far from it.
