Former Villan Honoured
Powell began his career with Bargoed in the South Wales League, and at the tender age of 17 he was spotted by QPR.
He made 110 league appearances for the London club before moving to Villa for a whopping £17.500. My history isn't too hot, but the official site states that this was a record fee at the time for a half back.
Powell represented Villa for 79 games before becoming player-manager at Port Vale.
At the grand old age of 91, Powell still helps coach Team Bath in the British Gas Business Football League Premier Division (what a mouthful) and has worked as a coach at the University of Bath for more than 30 years.
Speaking on the OS, Powell said:
'This is a real honour and a privilege. It was a big surprise when I got the letter. I've been in football for more than 70 years and I've thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
'I'm 91 and I've still got something left in me to give. I'll stay in the game as long as I'm enjoying it.'
As long as he's enjoying it, I doubt he'll change his career any time soon then.
Wonder if we'll see the same kind of commitment from modern day overpaid millionnaires - sorry footballers.
