Barcelona Star Linked To Villa

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has dismissed reports linking us with a 7million bid for Porto defender Jose Bosingwa which is probably just as well judging by the fact Manchester United are today, in the Telegraph, being linked to a bid for him in the summer. When asked about the bid reportedly about to be made by Villa for the right-back Martin O'Neill simply said 'That's news to me.'

Various papers including the Daily Star (yes, I know!) today have us linked to a double 10million bid for Barcelona and former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen and Arsenal's young right-back Justin Hoyte.

It is thought by some that Hoyte was due to sign for Villa in the summer only for Arsenal to pull out of the move as they needed him for cover when they suffered several injury scares.

29-year-old Eidur Gudjohnsen has also been linked with West Ham and Manchester City.

Gudjohnsen is proven quality and would be a step up from Carew in my book. Assuming its Carew who makes way, I hope he doesnt put Gabby back out wide.
West Ham will offer him 80k per week.
Forget about Gudjohnsen. Its 2 right backs, a left back and a keeper we need. we've already got 4 strikers???? and maybe a right winger?
true true, and there's no point paying him 80 grand a week as he's not actually that good. Much rather have Defoe or Bent
We may have 4 strikers but none are as good as Gudjonhsen. Why are so many fans so happy to stand still? How about 2 right backs, a left backm a right winger AND a striker? We're not in desperate need for a keep as Carson is on loan till end of season.
Is a 29 year old, not cutting it at a top team really what we're after for 6-7 mill? Don't doubt he might be able to do us a job but is he going to get 15+ goals a season? Anyone familiar with his record at chelsea?
Gudjonsen is a quality player, we nearly signed him from Bolton but Chelsea got him. I think he has great distribution and he has one of the best finishes, very good striker, the young lads could only learn from him just like the young lads at arsenal have learnt from Henry. From what is about the top four get the best and all the teams below get the rest, Gudjonsen is the top of the "and the rest" category
Hello its transfer time I better put my 10 pence worth in. Gudjonsen I think would be a great buy and still 3 yrs left in him. But what would be the plan up front - drop Carew or Gabby?
Only need one right back. Got Erik Lund in reserves. Great prospect. Get him out on loan, and with that experience would be good cover for a 'new' right back - Hoyte? Good signing. So would be Diarra. He is more versatile. Can play right back or central midfield. Matt Taylor would give us good cover and options down the left side. Would love either James Milner or David Bentley wide right, but can't see us getting either. Hope we don't end up with Routledge. Up front, Gudjonsen would be great at the right price. Otherwise Bent or Defoe.
Johnnyuk, there's a difference between not cutting it at a top team and not cutting it at Barcelona. Gudjonsen is a brilliant idea for that money, if he's willing to come of course.
Gudjonsen is a fantastic finisher and could be the poacher we need in the box to benefit from the improved service from the wings that ash provides . I have said before that a left winger alowing Ash to go on the right is what we need, and with a good finisher we can push for europe. As much as I admire Carew, he is not clinical enough (remember JPA, same disease). Add a RB and there's enough at the back even if we sadly have to part with the Beard. Hoyte fits the profile. Cahill one for the future and should not be sold, please. UTV
I agree with the above, we've got enough about us defensively once we buy hoyte, and i mean "once we buy him". Let's face it, it's only a matter of when, not if. Gudjohnson was quality, but is he what we need now? No. We do need an out and out striker, yes, but not one like Gudjohnson, we've already got a big guy who's not as clinical as he should be. Maybe in place of Carew, but definitely not both. We need Defoe, but it's getting less and less likely every transfer window. Bent? Maybe. Probably not though. I'm telling you all now...let's just buy Kevin Doyle...he'd be quality. Stick him up with Gabby, we can't fail.
We do need more competition for places striker wise, we might have four but only John Carew is experienced (and he has had injury problems) Luke Moore looks like he is off, Gabby is young, exciting, still learning but not the finished article yet. Marlon Harewood? Not sure he counts? Not being nasty but he is not the next level, players like Gudjohnsen are.
The Fear
who thinks we have been lucky with injuries? apart from carew and petrov not many, thats who I can think of. Compare it to west hams nightmare injury list and you'll see we been very lucky. Risky by o'neill but may pay off as a lot of teams spent a huge amount in the summer they are allspent up i.e. liverpool, Then in comes villa splashing the cash in january, could just pay off, what is everyone elses opinion?
If West Ham offer Gudjohnsen 80k per week, where does that leave us? My feelings on this revolve around the fact that, it solely depends on the player nowadays. They have all the power. What our fans find hard to accept is that some players would prefer to join other clubs. This will happen unless we can qualify for Europe or win a cup. Yakubu, Glen Johnson and Bent are good examples.
On the other hand we have moved on from previous seasons. We beat Wigan and Blues to Harewood, Spurs and West Ham to Young. But were dealing in the second tier of clubs, unless we shell out 20m per player.
Here we go again it must be transfer window time...I will be stunned if gudjohnson turns up at VP. he is over rated and too expensive and 29. he is good on his day but doesn't have enough of them to warrent the kind of money he would cost.
well said tarzan.. some people are amazed at the disloyalty shown to, not just villa but all clubs. how many of us show the loyalty to our employers that we demand from players??? Its all relative.
He'd certainly be a better bet than Crouch, but I cant see it happening. Hoyte yes, that deal might be completed. The kid needs to be playing regularly, and that wont happen at The Emirates.
Dont you think Villa are getting a bit above their station!! Barcelona stars dont usually go to teams OUTSIDE the top four!
MIllwalljohn, could the same not be said about Real Madrid, but then Michael Owen doesn't play for a top 4 team. I understand your thinking but your logic is clearly complete *********. :oP
Villain Of The North
Millwall? who?
My truthful comments have obviously niggled you, I was just stating facts so you was less chance of you being dissappointed! Merry Christmas and a Hopeful January transfer window!!
Also VOTN Barcelona players are of a high calibre.... Mr Owen is clearly NOT, So your comment may have been one of fury rather than logical sense. BUT thank you anyway
Isn't Gudjohnsen on somewhat astronomical wages also? Another reason that a move to B6 seems highly unlikely.
wouldnt mind having hoyte. another young english player for MON to mould.
AstonMartinOneill, good shout on Kevin Doyle, he has potential and would be less wages than Gudjonssen, who I still rate. I wonder if Downing fits the Left side bill, rumours over the weekend he doesn't want to stay at Boro and is out of contract soon?????? Ash on the right and Downing on the Left?????? Interesting.
