'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Unhappy 'Arry Slates Abuse

Poor old 'Arry. His team might be winning but his reputation once again has been dragged through the mud.

The Portsmouth boss had a good old moan after the game saying managers should not have to put up with the abuse they get. I must admit, I mostly agree. The look of hatred and the contorted faces of some fans just amazes me. Without the opponents the games would be very one sided, so although we all have to show our passion, I'm not sure the ones that are just there to spread hate and bile are really adding anything to the game.

Harry Redknapp said in the Daily Mail online, about the abuse he got today,

'You've got people saying stuff behind you with little kids shouting filth. I didn't bring my kids up to talk like that. Do we have to keep standing there and accepting that? It didn't happen when I went with my dad to watch Arsenal play every Saturday. There was none of this sort on nonsense going on. Maybe I shouldn't get upset but I do. What hurts me the most is when I see someone going at it, when they have got their little son by their side. He can talk how he wants to me. But doing it in front of his lad and making filthy gestures just stinks. Maybe it is a reflection on society.'

Have to agree Arry, I'd still have you as England manager though! Only time abuse is justified is if it is directed at Robbie Savage, then obviously it is warranted !!! (Only trouble is, Robbie loves it, I am sure he gets more offended when he gets none!)

Must admit I hate some of the tossers who go to the games. I like banter and passion, but some of the filth that is yelled at players, including our own, is just out of order.
The Fear
although they usually get banned you see it on here too. I wonder what the General would say about it if asked. Thing is when you have blind fiath and a team comes along twice on the trot to disillusion you some fans can only resort to such to relieve themselves. Its sad and it should be condemned as I do
avfc48
If a manager or coach dosn`t want crowd abuse, he should sit up in the stands. Players and managers pitch side are there to be viewed and have to take the stick. Children also here and see fowl language on the pitch side, I`ve never hears a manager address that.
Fletch
I agree with 48 and Fear, I was down at VP for the first time in ages today (due to living in the South East.) But I get depressed with the lanaguage and filth. It's the Chavs I'm afraid.
tarzan
And a lot of those chavs are old enough to know better. I'd love to know how a lot of them can even afford to be there in the first place!
NeilBaker
I agree 110&! Some of the abuse managers and players take is absolutely despicable. But at the end of the day, what can you do really? Just get it right up them, to put it politely in Scotland.
RK's-Back-GIRFUY
Without sounding like a grumpy old man it is a reflection on society, I have been three times this season to Vp with my kids and to Chelski once with my mate and his kid and have kept the urge to use foul language completely under control. You can be passionate without resorting to abusive and foul language.
fatloser
There is a daft campaign to kick racist abuse out at VP - when there isn't any - and no mention of the foul language which is too frequently used. OK it reflects society - so lets start a campaign against it anyway. Talking about campaigns, how about a fan campaign to kick out 12.45 kick offs. That is why the attendance was low. many kids play on Saturday mornings and cannot get to these games. So if the FA really want to inspire the grass roots of the game make sure they are played when people can get here.
Gordonsleftboot
Agreed, it is a sad reflection of society and a sign of the times unfortunately. I would go as far to say if anyone is caught in the act, then they should be banned for life from any ground, not just V.P. These kids who witness this from their so called parents/peers, are being manufactured into mini models! Very sad.
Nigel-not-Reo
Loved it when the photographers tried to take his picture before the kick off in front of the dug out and he turned his back!
merlin
Redknapp is a legend in managing and always a laugh on the tv etc. I can't understand why he got any abuse other than from sore losers. Would understand if it was Fergie or McLaren or Sven or....
Villan444
I thought the chant about bunging the ref was quite funny TBF. He has a reputation to live up to it seems...... 5 years ago I heard him referred to as 'Harry the Bung' at a sportsmans do..... by an AGENT :)
Denis_B
boo hoo hoo 'arry. Bloody hell, ive had loads of abuse playing footy when i've played and i dont get paid millions to be there, jog on sunshine.
danvilla2
Arry's alright. Diamond geezer in my book. He's built a damn good Pompey side, and deserves credit for that. Did he deserve the foul abuse he was subject to? Did he hell. We were being rolled over on our own patch, and sadly some supporters cant handle defeat. They turn on the easy target, in this case Harry. He had the last laugh though.
glensider
I think the abuse should be at your players how let you down. We were brilliant at times & at times fortunate but we took the crap from you on &off the pitch & took what mattered the 3 points.
storagematt
I'm sorry but he deserved it!!!! The original chant about him bunging the ref was more dig at the ref and his performance than it was about Harry, but the Harry went and gestured to the crowd and from then on he took it full pelt so its his own stupid fault!
DeanoVilla
Deano is gesture was only inforing the Villa fans of the score in response to the abuse he was already getting ... It didn't offer anything that anybody didnt already know..... agree with most of your posts fella abuse (at anybody) at grounds is getting out of hand .... It's happening everywhere not just Villa ...... Did you see that Geordie guy hurl all that crap at Big Sam last week.... There's frustration which I understand but surely you'd want to get behind your team wouldn't ya ?
Chix
I would hate Redknapp to be England manager he would snap under the first knock on his front door from the press.
villabikes29
Fully agree Deano, the origional chant was definately aimed at the ref and then 'Arry comes out and gestures the Holte end....WTF does he expect....Im all for banning 12.45 kick offs they are *****e !! crap atmosphere, crap attendance, crap game....To be honest although we deserved nothing out of the game i thought pompy were the biggest load of cheats, they are all arms, all game there was elbows in backs then the second we did the same they got a freekick because we clearly arnt trained to hide the elbow !!!! Not an excuse just an observation, at time pompy were excellent
Bearvill
You don't see Scott Carson complaining about the abuse he gets for what happened against Croatia. He just gets on with his job, I suggest Mr Redknapp does the same.
UpTheHolte
Agree with all the posts against this type of scenario. I'm not condoning any of the chanting in any way but from where I was sitting in the Holte Lower it looked as though he gave a V sign to us at which point it certainly got worse so he in fact inflamed it himself a bit.
Jon.H
doesnt Fear sit by the bench... i think he instigated it :-P
shortshadyuk
i can vouch for the fear - he started it all! nope, seriously from where i was all i could hear were the 'collective fans' banter, which is part and parcel of the football supporters right - all fans do it, if o'neill had been arrested and so on we would have done it to him, but it is mainly meant in jest isnt it... quite what the blokes behind the dugout were saying i dont know - but i do think that the abuse that people have to put up with is out of order at times...
pompeyrug
are you sure that 'v sign' wasnt 3 fingers, as he put 3 fingers up at one point to signify it was 3-0... as said 'collective chants' are just banter, but sometimes individuals take things too far.
pompeyrug
pompeyrug, you're probably right, my point is that from the Holte it looked like a V sign and judging by the reaction of loads of others around me, we all thought the same. As I've said it doesn't excuse anything but I believe before that the "banter" was more in jest but afterwards became a bit more serious, so maybe he ought to think about his own part in reacting. However I take my lad to the games with me and I completely take Harry's point about blokes who dish out vile language in frnt of their kids, who will then think it's ok to copy it.
Jon.H
plus at the time I seem to recall it was only 2 - 0 .......
Jon.H
poor harry, what did he expect? he shouldnt move in such circles or assocciate himself with corrupt individuals.....as for never seeing such goings on on the terraces when he used to go to the arsenal with his dad - yeah right. i think it will get worse before it gets better for harry. i can t believe people thing coker was motm on sat aswell, he was pants.
Stig
A few issues here. The funny (in my opinion) abuse in the form of chanting about him liking a bung and paying the ref was spot on. It was football humour and if most stories are to be believed 'Arry has a reputation for the backhanders(allegedly). Having a majority of fans giving him this sort of stick is part and parcel of making VP an intimidating arena for visitors. However personal abuse and filth, especially in front of the kids is not really called for. That said, if I sat by the Doug Out (I mean dug out but old habits die hard) I would have been telling him that he is a cheating, moneygrabbing parasite of the game. And hopefully he will be found guilty and banished from football. There would be no need to f-ing and b-ing, just good old terraced banter. As for 12.45 kick offs. My daughter played in the morning for Villa Girls in Leamington and was soaked and frozen to the bone. There was no way I could take her to the game even though she is a season ticket holder. By the time I dropped her at home and got to the game there were only 10 minutes of the first half to go. So I agree with the earlier post to call for a ban on this stupid kick off time.
voiceoftheholte
Yet you still made it there voice. Impressive. Puts to shame some of the excuses from non-attendee's that we read on here.
