Paul Merson Worries For Villa

Just watched the game summary on Sky and their guest Magic man Paul Merson said he feared for Villa.

I know the quotes will go against the grain and some will no doubt jump up and down in anger, but - depending on purchases this January which will make or break our season - I tend to agree.

The former Villa, Portsmouth and Arsenal player said about us:

'I don't know what they have got if you know what I mean. If they are losing and they are behind, they have no plan b.'

Adding, 'Its lump forward, flick on, get the ball in the middle. Sometimes that doesn't work in the top league.'

'I worry for Villa, I just think they are going to be one of those teams that finish 8th, 9th or 10th.'

Hmmm, harsh or fair, what do you think?

Personally, it is all on who we bring in transfer wise January, a few quality buys and things could well change.

I think Merse is probably right. I can't see us bring in many come January.
still skeggy
Oh come on, ok two defeats one unlucky one not so unlucky but Villa hav been playing well this season. Today just seemed to be one of those games and Pompey were very physical, villa didnt look a match, Laursen got knocked over a few times and was lucky to get free kicks out of em. David James with a brilliant save from Agbonlahor. it's a setback but surely a win next week, we got quality, just need to add to it in some areas. I think merse was a great player but his punditry is a little lacking, cant judge on this one game what villa are about!
krisvilla
He's half right, our midfield was poor, but the early home goal helped them big time.
tarzan
He's right we have no plan B
VillaCrazy
forget 'plan b' we have no 'plan a', gabby and young run and dive, we get free kicks and hope to score that way, we need flair players or someone to play killer passes
shortshadyuk
We were unlucky not to get a result today, really unlucky not to score through Gabbi, Laursen X2 in the first half. They had 2 shots on target all game! We were robbed of at least a point. We looked dangerous at every turn.....jees cannot believe some comments!
KSarge1
I think i have to agree with part of what Mers says. in the villa side we a a bit 1 dimensional, Plenty of toil not much guile, if you close down the wings mostly young we're struggleing. Today we was unlucky we created some good chances but they fell to centre halves. Apart from Gabby hitting the bar, to sum up a bad day at the office but i think we'llhave more to come. Thats not me be negative because i'm a possitve fan generally but its only in year two of the five year plan. MoN has plenty of rebuilding to do. I dont expect massive reansfer activity. we need to prove ourselves in the league if we're to attract great players not just good ones. MoN can only pull a player so far the chance of silverware does the rest.
gappy65
Merson is right a very, very accurate assessment
avfc48
we need a merson in the team, that's what he's saying. no surprise. we weren't any better when he was playing.
tarzan
At the moment we are a 9th or 10th place team this time last year we were a 10th -13th place team.
Pking
Isn't it strange - you don't hear from some people for weeks. Perhaps they can afford to take long winter holidays. No sign of a congratulatory post when we've stuffed Blose, Boro and Blackburn away from home, but up they pop as soon as we lose ... :o)
BobTheBuilder
Well said BTB, spot on mate.
Nigel-not-Reo
I worry about Merse, his front tooth falls out with alarming regaularity on live tv!
merlin
Shortshady called it right. Ksarge, that is what Merse means by no bite Laursen cannot miss 2 chances like that and it wasn't down to luck, just poor finishing. I know he is a defender but after seeing those 2 screamers today from muntari, Krancjar has done that a few times this season and Matty Taylor did that last year several times. WHO in the whole Villa squad could do that. I don't think Dangerous is the word I would use when their physically superior team looked like they had us in their pockets. But as for 48 you need to very, very calm down and stop getting excited when your team loses.
Villan444
Martin O'Neill has just been awarded Manager Of The Month, we won three out of three away from home, unluckily lost to Arsenal following a brilliant second half display and Merse watches one game as a pundit, and as it happens probably our worst display of the season and we are condemned to mid table mediocrity. No we aren't the finished article, yes today was poor but get a grip. Before the last two games we were going well. Yes we need reinforcements in January but are we so fickle that two defeats can knock the stuffing out of us so easily. As for "those who know better", I didn't notice any of you posting on yesterdays article to congratulate MON and Gabby on their awards. Says it all for me.
Jon.H
Every time a team looses (any team) - someone always rings local radio and complains "were just hoofing long balls up the field" - listen next saturday and see. Not much went for us today - David James was in great form , they got the vital first goal - this team isn't the finished article. MON will rustle up the changes over time - perhaps not in the way we expect, for example I m not expecting a massive splash in the Jan Window - and lets be honest the transfer market isn't the great salvation under MON - Only Ashley Young has consistently delivered the goods !
graydon
Young who was totally useless today you mean. Merse is right we don't have the squad able to change things and even if we did O'Neill I doubt would know how. Against better teams we lose, Chelsea excepted and we maybe should have then, its a fact, its sad but as along as we keep beating the likes of Blues and those like them we will do ok no panic. Like I said when those gloater's were on when we'd won a few inconsequential away games we did ok and cemented our top of the table position for when we lost against better sides. Today and last week were such times, its the way of things until O'Neill gets better quality players, and I don't mean Harewood and Knight alike's. No need for panic, as long as the injury list stays small we'll be ok.
avfc48
They're not "gloaters" they just aren't miserable..... "maybe we should have (lost to Chelsea)" perhaps the most pathetic rambling ever in all of the misery that you perpetrate
gmvillan
Jon H and Graydon. I Agree with both of you especially jon H, we lose the game and its like armageddon. Jesus we won 4 on the trot , we are by no means the finsished article and we are going to have poor games, like today. It's a young team and inconsistency unfortunatlely is going to be the order of the current season and possibly next. It's a work in progress and we will have to be pateint the team wil learn from each defeat and each victory/ draw . i have faith and I thank my lucky stars we have a manager like MON I have a confidence in him that no other manager, he's intelligent bloke who you can see has the respect of the players. A team like portsmouth can only go so far they are limited de to ground size, villa are a bigger club and expect us to be way ahead of portsmouth, its a long term vision, I know people say '5 year plan' and 'long term vision' but with o'neill I have the confidence that was never there before. He will deliver !!!
krisvilla
avfc48 you wont be happy untill villa are relegated your a gloomy ********, hate to see, you as a motivational speaker,.
krisvilla
Three away wins on the trot and we were all a happy bunch of campers, two reversals and we're all down in the dumps, writing ourselves off. There's a happy medium here, thats where we are. Nothing has changed. We're a decent side. Not the finished product, but we're getting there.
glensider
We were very direct yesterday. So crap to watch the long hoof up the middle I thought we'd stopped doing that!
DeanoVilla
Most of us are far from down in the dumps, Glensider, only those who want to be because it suits them. You know, those who never post on here when we win, but are so quick on the finger when we lose.
BobTheBuilder
In days of old people were attracted to executions, and negatives sell newspapers. Some people love to wallow in misery and gloom - believing they have the god given gift and right to be perfect at all times. Sometime wonder why they dont show the rest of us how its done. I look forward to seeing avfc48 in midfield spraying passes to all and sundry.
Gordonsleftboot
and merse offered great praise for pompey from what i was told - which is unusual for him really, he doesnt often have that many good words to say for us these days... pompey are starting to turn a few heads arent they.
pompeyrug
Hey you're a good side, I spent 90 minutes worrying.you'd come back at us.
pentonpompey
AVFC48 - Liverpool got trounced by Reading and Arsenal beaten by Middlesborough this weekend. Arsenal could only draw at Newcastle the other day also. Does that make them pathetic mid-table teams? Do you think their managers don't know what they are doing either? We're still only 3 points off Liverpool and 4th place. What are you expecting that we're not delivering at the moment? You really must be a bluenose in (a very poor) disguise....
YatesyVillain
AVFC48 when was the last time you even came to villa park? you sound like a sad old git to me.
