O'Neill Confident Melly Will Stay

Martin O'Neill believes that both he and Villa can do enough to persuade Olof Mellberg to sign a new contract with the club.

Rumours have regularly popped up since Mellberg admitted that he wanted to take stock of his options before committing to anything. It is believed that Villa's performance this season may be the deciding factor in where the Swedish international plays next season.

The Villa boss however fully believes that Mellberg can be convinced to remain at Villa Park, despite reported interest from Serie A giants Juventus.

O'Neill told avfc.co.uk: "Can we get him to sign? Absolutely, I am trying to make an appointment now. We have got this free week and I will be trying to speak to their agents.

'I will either get them over or get them on the phone and we will see where we are. I am well aware that sitting and talking to somebody, and doing a deal, are two different things."

The possibility that Mellberg will remain at the club will be good news for Vital Villa editor Jonathan Fear, who has awarded the former captain the "Vital Villa Best Beard" award for two years running.

i want him to stay but if he chooses to go for a golden hello at Juventus, who can really blame him?
The Usual Suspect
I think it may be time for him to move on anyway with us most probaly signing a right back in jan he will have to battle it out with laursen, knight, davies + cahill for a starting place, if i was him I would go.

Yes, it obviously all comes down to the fact as to whether Olof wants to sample life elsewhere before its too late, or remain at VP fighting for a central defensive position that was once undisputably his. Time moves on, and maybe it is time for Olof to move on to pastures new. He owes us not a thing. Good luck to him, in whatever he chooses.

I'll be delighted if he stays but if he choses to leave for pastures new I'll wish him all the best as he's been a great servent to our club.

I hope Olly stays, he's Villa through and through! If we get Europe this year he'll definitely stay. Up the Beard

the signing on fee would be a massive retirement plus point for him if he goes, who can blame him?

The thing is here, if, as we all hope, we are indeed able to bring in a specialist right full back come January, then will Olof be able to re-claim a place in central defence? An inability to do so, will only surely steel his resolve to move on.

and on that topic....fair play to MON, has once again proved that despite many of us thinking we can do a better managerial job, he knew fully the capabilities of his squad, and he knew we could cope without rushing in for a specialised RB if the right one wasn't available. Olly has done a fine job of filling in, I can't recall anything that we could attribute to him that's cost us points, and we're currently 7th in the league (or the billionaires club as it appears to have played out). Well done MON. Now let's just hope we can get the right man in January, which was always the plan...wasn't it?

According to Channel4 and others, Mellberg has agreed to join Juventus next season.
