Austrian Keeper Joins Villa

Austrian goalkeeper Thomas Dau has joined the club having impressed during a two-week trial spell.

The 16 year old is the second Austrian shot stopper to be picked up in recent years by Villa, with Robert Olejnik now having moved to pastures new.

Academy Director Bryan Jones spoke to avfc.co.uk: 'He was on trial with us for two weeks and we were all very impressed with him. We definitely think he's one for the future.'

I'm sure somebody said that about Olejnik once, but welcome anyway Thomas!

Wayne Henderson, Boaz Myhill, Robert Olejnik, all touted as possibly great future goalkeepers! I wont hold my breath.
DeanoVilla
Deano i get your point but Wayne Henderson has become a full international with the Republic, Myhill is very highly rated at Hull and several Prem sides have 'looked at him'. Olejnik I think is at Falkirk. None of them have become 'top class' yet, but they have all made the grade and would make good 'number 2's' a la Stuart Taylor. MAYBE, this lad will go one better. On keepers, I hope something gets arranged to sign Scott Carson asap.

Deano - good point but it is all about development. How many good young outfield players fail to make the grade too? Stefan Moore is the last obvious in that category. Just have to keep trying and one will come through at some stage.

You have to gamble though Deano, take a chance, its the name of the very highly competitive game that the premiership is nowadays. If he develops into a future Villa Park keeper then great, if not, nothing has been lost along the way. Good luck to the lad.

Deano - I bet you don't even believe in Father Christmas do you?

Sorry to raise the old debate again but I would prefer us to be signing 16 year old english goalkeepers I'm sure theres plenty of talent out there.

At Liverpool they nuture the English kids then kick them out before they become paid apprentices. At Villa we bring on foreign youth then buy English players. makes sense eh?

be this a sign the scouting network exists, at youth level at least ?

I question that there is though villabikes29, at least not young English keepers of the required standard, otherwise surely we'd be in there competing for their signature. I may well be wrong here, but I would imagine that MON and the club as a whole would opt for British talent over lads from abroad if they were readily available.
