'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Scott Carson & Thomas Sorensen Talk

For those now looking at the Doug era with rose tinted spectacles, this is a reminder of just how short sighted he was.

Former Villa chief scout Ian Broomfield has revealed he targetted the keeper but Doug refused to pay the money. Broomfield said: 'We tried to take him to Villa for 600,000 but Doug Ellis wouldn't put his hand in his pocket - now they will have to pay 10m for him.'

Reports today are suggesting that Carson will keep his place in the England team following his debut in the friendly v Austria and will face Croatia in our crunch Euro qualifier tonight. Gareth Barry is also expected to return in a five man midfield.

Carson, speaking to Sky Sports, said:

'I had been getting banter off the lads saying I had the record for the most England squad call-ups without winning a cap. It was nice to get that cap. Now I can give the lads a little bit of banter back. I wasn't bothered I didn't have a lot to do. I just wanted to get out and play and avoid controversy. I was just delighted to get my first cap.'

He also says the fans are crucial tonight, 'The fans are going to be very important when we need a positive result. Hopefully they will be right behind us. The England fan base is right up there with the best. Every away game they come out in their thousands and support the team well - like in Austria - and everyone in the squad is really grateful to them home and away.'

Just a reminder that the Holte will be screening the game tonight along with booze and grub, what more could you ask for?!

Meanwhile Thomas Sorensen is being linked to a move to Middlesbrough, the reports carry no quotes or real substance but lets face it, our rejects always go to Boro, so why not Thommo?!

Ellis for England.

MON on Carson "I couldn't tell you if he was chosen in a really important game how he would react to it all," the Aston Villa manager said. "But he's capable of doing very well. He's far from the finished article but the great thing about Scott is that he has a great appetite for work."
The Fear
I can see Tommy following Jlloyd and Gav to the Reebok as a replacement for Jussi.

whilst i believe that carson is a fantastic keeper and should and would sometime down the line be battling with foster and green for that england no.1 spot im amazed, actually livid that spineless steve has seen fit to not only not pick james, but demote him to no.3! robinson shouldnt even be in the squad let alone on the bench but i cannot believe that jamo - the best english keeper for at least 2 yrs - hasnt been given the no.1 shirt back... yep he's 37, but so what he's as young a 37 year keeper as ive ever seen! i cannot stand spineless steve, dislike the fella even more after this... altho, even with all this said, good luck to carson tonight - i just hope that his bottle holds up to the task...

Good luck Scotty! I'm sure you'll do us and the nation proud (fingers crossed)....

Until Robinson was labelled a "liability" by someone prior to the last world cup he'd been solid for us. It seems that one comment has imo, seen him spiral in confidence and offer poor performances. Not that long ago we tried to sign him and would have hammered on about him being the best keeper in the prem. He doesn't become a bad keeper over night, just as barry wasn't a sh*** player when he went through a bad form patch... That said, stick carson in goal. He deserves a try out while other top keepers are not in form.

It is a little worrying having England's No. 1 keeper at your football club. Ever since Seaman failed to build a wall during the last game at the Old Wembley, England's keepers seem to have been associated with gaffs (and so have Villa keepers since the porn barons joined us in what they perceive to be the dizzy heights of the Premier League). Carson looks accomplished, is superb in the 6 yards box, seems to know when to come, and his shot stopping a reactions are excellent. Tonight will show us how if commands his back four - and if they're are at 6s and 7s Scott is going to have to show some agility. I was to nervous about tonight, but now, when the ball goes anywhere near the England goal and if Barry gives away possession my heart is going to be in my mouth! Scott and Gareth - you've both proved to be outstanding players - we have every confidence that you WILL do our nation and our club proud! I just hope the ball runs kindly for England's No. 1 on the 'bobbly' Wembley turf....

Pompeyrug, we remember James and although admittedly on his day he is as good as anyone, it only takes one mistake (which unfortunately that is what he used to do. ) But James should have been given a run out over the last couple of years to see if he has put that behind him, liked him publicly slagging off 3rd choice steve. Other than that agreed Mclown should go and take Robinson with him.

Big test for Scott Carson. The eyes of the nation will be upon him in what is a game that could make or break his long term international career. Really surprised that McClaren has gone with him for this one, but then again I guess, if you're good enough, you're old enough.
glensider
The best decision that McClown has actually made, along with leaving Beckham out of the team. Yes McClown has been not the best, but mark my words IF we make the Euro's tonight we will win it with McClown and all because the press will have ruled us out before we even get there. The pressure is off and which England fan expects with McClown in charge? If England are ever going to win a big championship, its likely to be this one.
KSarge1
I applaud McClaren (first time for everything, and probably the last!!) he's picked Carson on merit, Robinson has been shocking recently.
*Holte*End*Star*
Robinson doesn't even make the bench!! Hopefully they aren't going to come out with a lame excuse that he is injured.
Villan444
This is Carson's firt real cap. What a bloody game to play in! He doesnt stirke me as a flapper and seems clam all the time (ignore the red card against United, that was pure frustration!). His kicking is good and shot stopping quality. Remember the guy is only 22, imagine how good he'll be in 5 years time. Sign him in January MON before his value hits 20m.
son_of_cher
Yes, sign him MON. Sign him now, his value is the same as a second hand Ford Sierra after that display.
TDBhoy
I know its easy to say after the event, but I was voicing serious concerns prior to the event. Wrong, wrong game to thrust him into. Dont care how good or how promising a keeper he is or may well be, it was a huge gamble to take by McClaren.
