For those now looking at the Doug era with rose tinted spectacles, this is a reminder of just how short sighted he was.
Former Villa chief scout Ian Broomfield has revealed he targetted the keeper but Doug refused to pay the money. Broomfield said: 'We tried to take him to Villa for £600,000 but Doug Ellis wouldn't put his hand in his pocket - now they will have to pay £10m for him.'
Reports today are suggesting that Carson will keep his place in the England team following his debut in the friendly v Austria and will face Croatia in our crunch Euro qualifier tonight. Gareth Barry is also expected to return in a five man midfield.
Carson, speaking to Sky Sports, said:
'I had been getting banter off the lads saying I had the record for the most England squad call-ups without winning a cap. It was nice to get that cap. Now I can give the lads a little bit of banter back. I wasn't bothered I didn't have a lot to do. I just wanted to get out and play and avoid controversy. I was just delighted to get my first cap.'
He also says the fans are crucial tonight, 'The fans are going to be very important when we need a positive result. Hopefully they will be right behind us. The England fan base is right up there with the best. Every away game they come out in their thousands and support the team well - like in Austria - and everyone in the squad is really grateful to them home and away.'
Just a reminder that the Holte will be screening the game tonight along with booze and grub, what more could you ask for?!
Meanwhile Thomas Sorensen is being linked to a move to Middlesbrough, the reports carry no quotes or real substance but lets face it, our rejects always go to Boro, so why not Thommo?!
