Superb News, Cahill Still A Villan

Ah good, a bit of nice press!

Villa defender Gary Cahill, currently on loan and impressing greatly at Sheffield United, says he won't be moving away from Villa permanently.

This follows reports last week that suggested he wanted to clear up his future and that he wouldn't rule out leaving Villa Park if he wasn't in the managers plans.

Cahill told the official site, 'I don't know where that's come from because I haven't spoken to the manager here or the manager back at Villa about that. There was nothing said at any stage that it could become permanent. The manager knocked back my loan the first time - he said he didn't want me to go. It got to the stage where I had to go and ask him again when he left me out totally against Chelsea. I'd like to think I'm in a decent position, because I've got a year and a half left on my deal and I'm getting first-team football.'

Adding, 'I've got an apartment in Sheffield and it is comfortable being near people I know. But I'm due back at Villa on December 18 and my home and my career still lie in Birmingham. I need to speak to Martin O'Neill closer to that date and see what opinions he's got about my future.'

He also says he saw the Villa v Blues derby on tv and said it was a 'great win' joking that his overhead kick was a better winner than Gabby's.

Happy about that, I think Cahill is a good defender and great prospect, he is only young and has plenty of time to become a Villa regular. I would hate to see someone like him leave at only 21 years of age, imagine if we'd done that with Gareth Barry for instance?

I am sure thats good news for you. He's already assured himself of Villa cult status with his goal against Brum.

How hard is it for MON to pick up the phone and talk to our players? For a guy who supposedly has the best man management skills in the game none of the players seem to know where the stand? Martin pick up the phone and sort it. Cahill is worth keeping
son_of_cher
He should be in the team or 3rd choice behind Mellberg and Laursson on the bench and waiting his opportunity. Bring him back and restore him to the fist team squad asap. He is more than a prospect, he is very good already.
stennyvilla
How;s he been playing for the blades, anyone know?
son_of_cher
Cahill is the next Barry.

Thanks to Gary for somewhat clarifying a clouded situation, that is indeed good news. Selling him would I believe be a very bad mistake, and its pleasing to read him saying that he has no plans for a confrontation with MON about his future career. Once again, proof if ever proof were needed, that you dont believe what you read in the press.

Get him back for Christs Sake

Great news, it truly is. As I mentioned in one of the other threads though - i've got absolutely no idea what MON is trying to do with regards to our defence.....some of his signings and decisions are baffling me....do we really need Davies AND Knight? Wouldn't one of them plus Cahill have been sufficient. Plus a RB, obviously. Suggests to me that Mellberg is definitely on his way, but I sure as hell hope Laursen doesn't follow him out of the door. I agree son_of_cher - how hard is it for MON to sort this crap out? Sign up Laursen for goodness sake....
YatesyVillain
He is one of the best up-and-coming young central defenders in the premeirship. IMO we should do everything to try and keep hold of him

I know I am going to get shot down for saying this but he can't be another Barry because barry was a first team regular when he was younger than Cahill. Cahill is ok but I wouldn't be too worried if he left.
iomvilla
Hopefully he'll come back and give Knight a run for his money. How MON can think Knight is the better player is totally beyond me.
DeanoVilla
great news now get laursen signed up.
villabikes29
Cahill had a fantastic game against Stoke and scored the winning goal.
myleftfoot
Agree wih 29 sign Laursen now!!!!!!
morky13villa
I wonder YatesyVillain if MON brought in Zat Knight having given up hopes of snapping up Curtis Davies? Agree that signing both appears to be rather strange, plus of course neither have yet shown form to suggest that they are better than Gary Cahill.
glensider
Agree Glensider - i've had similar thoughts...expensive error though if that is the case. Plus would think he'll be looking to either move one of them on, or 'not take up the option to buy' in Davies' case? The only thing I can actually see that Knight seems to have given us over Cahill is a bit more aerial superiority, but a lot of that also comes from Laursen. We used to be very vulnerable to the high ball and set-pieces, but we seem to have been less vulnerable this season....
YatesyVillain
At only 21 years of age MON could leave him on loan (I assume they are paying part of his wages) and recall him at the end of the loan spell. With rumours linking Melly and Laursen with moves away from Villa Park having a player waiting in the wings could be a good thing in the long run.
