Aston Villa Transfer Gossip

Aston Villa Transfer Gossip

According to several papers today, including The Mirror, Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson wants to take on-loan defender Gary Cahill permanently in the January transfer window. The reports say that Robson has asked his loan period to be extended until the clubs can agree on a fee said to be in the region of £1.5million. Great, we buy an average defender - 27 year old Zat Knight - from a very average club - Fulham - for £3.5million and get rid of a young (21) up and coming local product. Suppose the only question to ask is (if the report is true) why?

Meanwhile Liverpool full back John Arne Riise has ruled out a move away from Anfield having been linked to Villa. Riise told the club's website: 'There was a story about me moving to Aston Villa in January. He said on the rumour 'I was away with the national team at the time and Liverpool are quite big in Norway so a lot of people were asking me about it. But it's completely false. I have 18 months left on my contract here and have no intention of leaving. Liverpool is the club closest to my heart and it's where I belong.'

Other reports over the past week have been linking Scott Carson with a permanent move to Aston Villa again with the reports once again suggesting that there is an arrangement in place between the two clubs to allow a permanent move at a set fee. The fee mentioned is a record breaking £10million. However this flies totally in the face of what Martin O'Neill has said several times about no such agreement being in place.

This is one signing I'd love to see made permanent, he could be our and England's No 1 for many years to come, and it looks like he might well get his chance of picking up his first full cap for England this Friday in the friendly v Austria. The Daily Mail claim that if he impresses, he will keep his place for the Euro qualifier v Croatia. Another reason for Carson to want to stay at Villa one would hope as he is guaranteed first team football with us and can see the size and potential of Villa knowing he could well be plying his trade in Europe within the next few seasons.

I hope there is an agreement in place, as his rise to England No.1 could see his value soar even further, plus I understand Arsenal are looking for a new keeper! :(

You need to get him ASAP before somebody else snaps him up. Is a great keeper.

4 signings are needed in Jan to make sure we qualify for Europe. A right back (Hoyte? Not playing) a left back (Matty Taylor Not 1st choice) and two strikers (Defoe Not playing and Crouch Not playing) please! The need for these players are all there to be seen. Mellberg is no right back and even though Bouma is having his best spell I still don't think he's good enough. We need our full backs going past our midfielders and providing attacking options i.e Ashley Cole, Evra etc. Mellberg and Bouma never do this and if they do their crosses are dreadful. We need a 30/40 a season striker partnership and I think Defoe and Crouch can get us the goals. I know getting these players will cost a lot but we will make it back in qualifying for Europe. Starting 11 after Jan. Carson, Hoyte, Laursen, Melberg, Taylor, Gabby, Barry, Reo, Young, Crouch, Defoe.

I hate commenting about MON as I think he is a v.good manager, but some of his transfer decisions do seem a bit weird. Both Cahill and Davies are certainly better prospects than Zat Knight so why the tal;k of selling Gary Cahill? We have a surfeit of centre backs on the books and with Knights self admitted tendency to loose concentration probalbly he is the least likely to succeed. I wonder why he is still being played. What he has got that I can't see and MON can. Please don't let Cahill go, he is the real future.

After the last two windows I have decided I know nothing about players and transfers. If Cahill is allowed to leave, it will confirm my total lack of understanding - might even pack in going to the games if I misunderstand them so much.

I think MON clearly knows who he wants and who he doesn't. Although his judgements have been a little weird at first you can see the method in his madness. Despite knight's reputation you can't argue with the facts, he did make it to opta's top whatever it was. I'm not sure we should be targeting people who aren't making the first team at top teams. Crouch didn't work before, and with our rep that strikers flop at villa he's not worth the risk. We need to unearth young talent the way wenger does.

Agree with Gordonsleftboot. Massive fan of Cahill, I really rate him. Everything a centre half needs. Good in the air, brave, good tactical awareness and comfortable in possession. Are we not seeing something? My signings in January would be Boswinga or Hoyte for right back, SWP or Milner or similar player for wide right, possibily Matt Taylor for left side and either Defoe or Bent up front if Spuds will release either. Gabby MUST continue to play up front and not be pushed into a wide right position. In my opinion that is, but as I appear to be wrong about Cahill maybe I am wrong about this as well. UTV
