'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Petrov Backed To Be Blues Slayer

Oh no, Mark Lawrenson, what have you done? After weeks of backing us to win (quite correctly along with Mystic Mug last week in the 2-0 v Derby) he has come out with a 1-1 v Blues on Sunday.

He told the BBC site: 'Another derby in a weekend of big games in the Premier League. Birmingham are back in the top flight and there will be some added intrigue, with Liam Ridgewell moving from Villa Park to St Andrews in the summer. I sometimes feel with these games the occasion takes over and football gets pushed out. I will go for a draw in a tense, nervy affair.'

Actually, difficult to argue with the sentiment, the feeling and passion is often not reflected in the game. Still, Mystic Mug
has polished his ball well and good and is going for a 1-0 Villa scoreline.

Vital Villa, in a poll suggested by Villabikes29, asked After Cahill's exploits 2 years ago, who will be our unlikely hero this Sunday?

Up step Bulgarian international Stiliyan Petrov according to 45%. Go on Stan, be a Villa hero and set yourself on the road to a more impressive contribution for the claret and blue's!

Next up was Ridgwell who polled 14% with a predicted own goal. A man who most likely won't even be on the bench, Mustapha Salifou, polled 13%. Blimey, what a baptism of fire he'd have if picked!

The rest:

Olof Mellberg (8%)
Marlon Harewood (7%)
Wilfred Bouma (5%)
Scott Carson (4%)
Curtis Davies (2%)
Isaiah Osbourne (1%)
Stuart Taylor (1%)

Our latest poll asks for your predictions on the game, will Villa win or win?

Where the option for a Villa win? :)
DeanoVilla
Surely if we expect Petrove to be our "unlikely" hero, he is no longer unlikely :-/
Villain Of The North
a win win situation, you guys must be positive about a WIN then!! lol reckon you'll out class brum, reckon it'll be 3-1 to villa. 1982!! lol
SMOKIEJACK
Got 1-1 written all over it I am afraid.
DrWatford
what's happened to Petrov? He was great at Celtic but he looks like he's struggling in the Prem. Any idea why?
merlin
maybe hes not as good as everyone thought he was...
villabikes29
ahem, good point villain of the north! Had to put win/win, can't contemplate a loss! Think Petrov has struggled to get up to the Prem speed Merlin. The SPL is a different kettle of fish and he has admitted that he cuuld cruise up there knowing the result apart from when they were playing Rangers.
The Fear
Draw is the form result, lets see! oink
tarzan
Anything could happen, and probably will. Difficult game to call, they always are. Defeat right now is unthinkable, but we'd get over it, and before you know it we'd be turning our attention towards Middlesbrough and Blackburn. Just hope we turn up, compete, and give it all we've got. Do that and we'll be o.k.
glensider
Dead right Glen , you've hit the nail on the head. Many of our fams expect us to win every game, that's fine bt it sets us for disappointment. Away wins in the premiership areas rare as rocking horse poop this year.
tarzan
Petrov couldn't slay his way out of a paper bag!
Jasper's Parrot
not another jasper ! 1-1 all over it , in my opinion ! BUT.... a conterversial BRUM win , could it happen again ?
jaspervilla
JasperVilla it wont happen end of story we will rip them apart on sunday no doubt and i have every faith.
villabikes29
Petrov backed to be a...WHAT??? Im out of here, laters all...
Blue is the colour
He would have been dropped under any other manager, you all know it!
St Andrews Blue
Glenisder....spot on as always, fair play my son!
son_of_cher
Oh and Ashley Young to run riot down the left!
son_of_cher
Is Ashley Young even fit?
St Andrews Blue
Petrov is pure garbage, but you will win the game 4-1!!!
will it ever happen
Petrov to get one, and Moore to get a hat-trick, that'd do for me. We'd have two heroes then!!!
Bigwire McGuire
wouldn't it be great if petrov came good tomorrow ? He would be a hero forever ! (no more fecking booing)DOL still gets talked about now when we just managed to beat them twice , and he was rubbish !
jaspervilla
its weird ridgewell did score an og are you lot psychic well the ones who voted for that?!
durks de rover
I am quite happy.
IanSymes
lol, Ian, don't go overboard mate!!!!!!!
The Fear
I think Petrov was my Man of the Match today; he made the assist for the first goal and generally played well in the middle with Barry. Petrov beat players today with his skill and made a couple of incisive passes which could have led to a goal or two. To be fair, since the Bolton match he has been playing consistently well and Villa should now go in to the middlesVilla match with some confidence of winning! UTV.
Yuen_Biao
Sooner he goe's the better IMHO. He just cant seem to sting a couple of good games together, I dont honestly know if he is half the player MON seems convinced he is.
col8
Disagree with you 100% Jasper's Parrot. Petrov has been having a rough time of late, but he's one of the most technically gifted footballers at Villa Park. Say what you like about the guy, and plenty of folk do, but there's a good footballer in there. I just hope he comes good at B6, and doesn't have to move on to reach his heights.
