Villans In Europe

Volley’s, clean sheets and plastic pitches as Villa’s international stars were in Euro 2008 qualification action, here’s how they got on.

Starting with captain fantastic, Gareth Barry played the full 90 minutes for England as they took the lead and then fell apart as Russia came from behind to win 2-1 thanks to a Wayne Rooney cock up and yet another display of weak hands from Paul Robinson on “that plastic pitch.” The Sun gave Barry a measly 4/10, which just goes to show how intelligent their reporters are. Scott Carson and Ashley Young were in the squad, but not named amongst the substitutes.

Not good news for Shaun Maloney, who in only his third start for Scotland as they went down 2-0 to European giants Georgia, sporting a 17 year old in goal. Scotland now have to beat World Champions Italy if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the finals.

Stand-in Villa right back Olof Mellberg has been looking bizzarely more attacking every week for Villa, and this can only be proved further by his popping up to volley home a Tobias Linderoth cross at the back post as Sweden drew away to Northern Ireland.

It was a quiet evening for Wilfred Bouma, as Holland rolled over minnows Slovenia 2-0, and Thomas Sorensen retained his international place just behind Martin Laursen with both players getting the full 90 minutes in Denmark’s 3-1 win against Latvia. Stiliyan Petrov only managed 45 minutes of football for Bulgaria as they drew with Albania, though I’m not sure anyone cares.

The sun giving Barry 4/10 is a disgrace. Shearer said on MOTD last night that he was fantastic again.

Gerrard was 4/10 and as for the manager and his tactical uselessness 1/10 is generous. In fairness we scraped past Estonia due to some own goals and poor goalkeeping. We managed to sit back for 45 mins and not concede but against decent opposition we were shown up.

4 out of 10? Christ on a bike, that is pathetic?! He was back defending, up front passing what more could he have done, he even set up Gerrard for one of the worst international misses for years!
The Fear
I thought Barry, Richards and Campbell were the only players to leave that game with any credit! Ferdinands distribution was awful, Robinson is a liability, Lescot was out of his depth and position, Gerrard was quiet, Wright Phillips and Cole didnt get in to the game, Rooney was eveywhere except where he should have been (Up front) and there is one player i have forgot eeeeerrrmmm let me think????? oh yes Owen was playing wasnt he???? the subs that came on........ Crouch at 7ft tall can't win a clean header, Downing must be shagging McClownshoes because he's ***** and finally Mr Lampard.....enough said. disapointment yet again for us English.

Hopefully all our lads who have been away on international duty will return to Bodymoor Heath fully fit and raring. We've enjoyed(?) the sideshows these past six or seven days, now for the main event.

Wonder what young Shaun is looking so distraught about?

Stiliyan Petrov only managed 45 minutes of football for Bulgaria as they drew with Albania!!! Thats 45 minutes more than he has managed for Villa since he arrived.

The whole England team was poor on Wednesday, Barry didnt have the best game but was one of England's better players.
