Villa Boss Looks To More Spending

With the transfer window just this moment closed Martin O'Neill says he is already planning the next spending spree and wants to develop the scouting network

He told the official site: 'I think the work goes on all the time. Now, with the window over, there's nothing you can actually do until the end of the season. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't then be going out. We will take in games and we're developing the scouting system. Ian Storey-Moore is taking that in hand and we're looking to add an even more thoughtful approach to it in terms of continental scouting.'

'I think we're covering the British Isles pretty well at this minute, but in terms of the continental scouting, we'll have to look into that a little bit further. We cover a lot of games, but we might just have to have an even more thoughtful approach to it. People can recommend this, this and this, but eventually I've got to go and try to see the players playing. I've got a lot of faith in the system that we have here, but like anything else, we can improve it.'

'I couldn't specify where we'll be looking at this minute. I wouldn't want to narrow my thinking on it, but I have one or two reasonably set ideas.'

Should be an interesting summer, although you have to ask, what happened to the previous scouting network that we were told by the previous regime was second to none? Hmmm, don't bother, think I know the answer to that!

im really glad that the search is continuing for more players. i didnt actually realise how small the squad was until i compared us to the watford team when i was looking through the program!

Yes! Yes! Yes! This is more like it. This is how it should be. This is what we have been craving for. No sooner does the mid-season transfer window close, than MON lets us know that his sights are already firmly set on the summer, when the rebulding of the squad and the club will continue. Planning ahead. Meaning serious business. This is what has been lacking for so many years.

Robert Green -anyone??

I wonder how many comments will be posted on Fear's "Summer Window Transfer Talk 1,2,3,4,5,6,7......." articles this summer!!? It'll probably be a record for this site, but we may have other records broken as the new regime break the club transfer record with a £10m+ signing!! ;-)

Green - more like Craig Gordan. Lets think bigger. Could also look at a season long loan of Denilson from Arsenal - looked great against the spuds the other night, and would take pressure off McCann.

NO More loans! We are a big club with a budget to match!

until we hit europe, i think we're going to have to get loans in. the big players we need to take us to that level wont come permanently until we're there. myleftfoot, i agree with you on robert green, bossie aside, some of our best keepers have been english. rimmer, spinksy, sealey aggro and...er, james!

I have often wondered about our scouting network, how its set up, how many scouts we have out there etc etc. Obviously during the Ellis era it must have been a thankless task being a Villa scout, but I'm pleased to hear that MON will be addressing the issue, which is no doubt in need of a major overhaul.
