'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villa Have Best Defender In League?

Martin Laursen, who once again yesterday won every header, says he is playing his best football since his AC Milan days.

The Danish international defender, who ended up being bandaged yesterday due to a cut on the head (and to be fair ended up looking like a pineapple!) told avfc.com

'I feel as though this is the best spell of my Villa career and possibly the best I've been playing since I was at AC Milan. Although there have been games at Villa when I feel I have played well, I have never been fit for long enough to put a decent run of games together. Now I hope I can do that. It would be good to get maybe 10 games in a row, then build on that just to show I can stay in the side consistently.'

On his career threatening injury he added, 'Everyone knows there were times when I felt I might never play again. But I have kept my place under this manager and I have a lot to thank him for. Now I think the time is right for everyone to stop talking about my injury worries as I honestly think I have not had any problems with my troublesome knee for about 18 months.'

He also says he can tell that things are going well because people are talking about his performances and not his injuries!

'It's always been in my game to be honest. I'm not the most technical player you've ever seen, but I will always make up for that by going into everything 100 per cent. That will never change and it's another reason why I cannot afford to think about injuries. But I also find that is something that is appreciated far more by supporters in England - it didn't get picked up as much by Italian fans.'

Does anyone know of a better centre back in the league at the moment? He is certainly in the top 3-4 that is for sure!

Definately up there with the likes of Terry, Vidic etc if not better. Rarely loses a header to an attacker, strong, quick and makes whoever his centre back partner is look good. We've waited a long time for Laursen, but he's delivering now.

The guy is one of the best in the world at the moment his reading of the game is immaculate, just look at the difference in Knight when he's beside him.I was reading that Milan bought him for 9mil in 2002.If he stays fit for the rest of the season we'll get Europe and Laursen will be a legend. The best defender we've had since Southgate.
Pking
He's better than Southgate, he is not so moody and self centred.

i'd like to see curtis davies alongside laursen - a great defender to learn from

If we get a decent RB that will mean 3 CB's to choose from to partner Laursen!!

Why haven't we signed him up on a longer term contract - would hate to see him slip away from us like so many of our other genuine class players in the past.....

Staying fit, doing the business, what else can we ask? Hopefully a new deal will be offered to him in the near future, but can we really blame the club for remaining on the side of caution as they attempt to put together a package that will suit both parties?

When you think though that he's now being spoken in the same breath by Villa supporters as Paul McGrath, then I think that very much pushes his performances and importance to the team into perspective.
