'If It's Football, It's Vital'

No Directions Needed For O'Neill

I get the feeling that Martin O'Neill isn't too keen on the idea of a director of football at Villa Park!?!

I remember years ago John Gregory talking about the possibility, I might be totally wrong but didn't he at one point suggest he'd like someone like Terry Venables helping out above him?

Anyway, when asked about the Jose 'I can cook an omlette' Mourinho situation where he seemingly got sidelined with a director of football interfering, the Villa boss said:

'In the case of appointing a director of football, I am sure the owner of the club would ask me and of course I would say 'no'. If the owner has the sort of relationship where the manager is allowed to do what he wants, that is the only thing a manager can ever ask for - to be in charge of affairs. That is the way I've tried to work. If I thought there was some sort of interference I would acknowledge that I wasn't overly pleased with it.'

He added that you have to 'earn the right' to be left to do your job.

I'm with Martin on this one. Despite their increasing popularity, I'm far from convinced that we need a 'Director Of Football' at Villa Park. Maybe I'm old fashioned in my thinking, but I firmly believe that it undermines the manager. It has to.

I think it all depends on the manager, some managers are great tactically and on the motivational side but are not interested in the business side. In that case it would surely be a help to tha manager to have a middleman to talk to, someone who really understands both football and the business side, rather than going directly to the board all the time, someone who can handle that end of things for him. That said, if the manager is confident and happy without a director of football and is willing to take on the entire workload then there is no reason to upset them in their job......as long as they are competant.

Would like to know what randy and the boards view is concerning a 'Director Of Football'. Wouldn't one clash though not only with your manager, but also with your CEO?
