So here we go, the final countdown, just a few days left until the transfer window slams shut until January.
Through the summer, we've managed ten installments of our gossip column, most of it has ended in utter frustration, but the next day or so HAS to result in some players incoming. If reports are right, Zat Knight from Fulham is currently undergoing a medical, so that will be central defence cover, now for a striker, midfielder and a right back or two?!

Been a bit of entertainment hasn't it? Not far off 4000 posts through the summer + all the talk in the forum. You culd be right again about Defoe Tarzan, who knows though. Won't find out unless you bid. I would love to see Anelka at Villa, he SHOULD be the sort of MON player, he is quality, sulky bugger or not! Him up front having service from Young, Barry and Routledge, hmmm, tasty!

Tasty indeed, some of the problem for us that there is not (yet) clear blue water between us and the Fulham's, Bolton's and Readings of this world. Everton prove that with a bit of team spirit, decent manager, proud history and European football you can attract a fairly decent player or three.

Who ever keeps saying that Knight is worse than Ridgewell, they really need there heads looking at. Knight has been a week in - week out player for Fulham and apparently according to Fulham fans was one of their best performers last season when made captain. Ridgewell is crap, always has been and always will be - with lack of pace and woeful distribution, plus his dilly dallying holding on to the ball and getting caught. Quick defenders can learn how to defend, slow defenders cannot learn how to become quick.

tylervilla Laursen and Olly are World Class defenders. If we tried to sign players with this kind of quality at the moment we would need European football - Davies is not proven at premiership level. We are lucky to have 2 such experienced and talented CB's. Knight is a good addition to the squad and makes Ridgewell look like well errrr Liam Ridgewall of BCFC. From a football perspective I would rather Zat Knight at CB cover than LR, but in my opinion I would prefer Barny Rubble to Ridgewell any day of the week, much quicker.

Most importantly Knight is rumoured to be a lifelong Villa fan, this has got to mean that he would fight for the cause and not give MON any grief. Is he good enough? only time will tell but he has already scored his first goal for Villa ;-)
Also he is much better than Ridgewell (the Bluenoses captain no less) even though I have only seen him play twice.

The same site also says that boro will sign Defoe, Crouch etc. I think until midnight on Friday we wont know who is gonna sign. So watch with eager anticipation as the rest of the week unfolds....

Harewood off the mark, good for confidence. Reckon there will be 3 signings of some description which I still think won't be enough. Knight at CB, a RB (could play Knight at CB and Olly at RB) and another signing but I ain't gotta clue as MON has completely lost me at the moment. Can't see Defoe going to Man U and only getting on the bench when Rooney's back. WHam could spoil things but I get the impression Curbishly is a bit of a clown and players are wary of him. I would love to get Adriano - I know O'Neill does not like 'big' characters but he can manage one surely!!! He is obviously wanting a fresh start if West Ham are linked - take a risk!! He wont lose value!! I remember saying in transfer thread 1 that I heard whispers about Adriano and commented on how 'fantasy' that sounded. Now it could happen. Adriano or Defoe near enough guarantee goals. A decent RB could make a solid and creative side who will score goals and will be hard to break down. Come on MON - good luck in the next few days!! Reading into tonights CL results - Ajax and FC Copenhagen have crashed out. Instantly that puts Huntellar and Hangeland in the shop window. S Bucearest won - so Dica will be looking forward to CL football and wont be coming to us. Celtic have gone out so Maloney may be tempted, but cannot see a double bluff by O'Neill and he won't go for Nakamura. Think i said it before on another thread that Mon is only able to attract good squad players at the moment and anyone he has bought is a marked improvement on those that have left with the exception of Stevie D. Evo, where is the evidence of the Davies deal? Why an initial loan for 9m? The Defoe Situation is interesting. My opinion is that; Pompey need to off load Nugent first (and want Anelka anyway). Also Chelsea are involved just because Man U may be sniffing around (top 4 control of the market). I can't see Chelski offloading SWP (as he's playing) and Man U (like Tevez) will want Defoe on the cheap as thier budget is spent.

If the Davies deal does happen as is being reported then I think he may play RB. Although I was told last week that Glen Johnson would sign this week and was a done deal. I suppose we can now just just wait and see as we've been waiting all summer. I truly believe Defoe is available after the comments from Redknapp. Although I do think he will go to Man U.

If defoe really wants a regular 1st team place he will move but that aint gonna happen at spurs, so he will either settle for his current lot, sitting on the bench happy to see his wages paid into the bank each month,for not a lot of effort or make a move out of spurs. If he stays at spurs then i would question his reasoning and motives in making that decision.

I think we will sign Davies and have a legit shot at Defoe, if he moves I think it will be to us. I have to think that even if Defoe does not come it has been a very good transfer window. If Defoe come I think excellent, just to look at the age of the squad. Also as much as I love Olly, if we were to loose him we now have cover and in Jan we could get good coin if he does not sign.

Yes Paultsmouth I have been to Portsmouth and it does smell like fish. You are obviously used to it. As for your Roll of Honours, 2 League Championships and 1 FA Cup. You've won just slightly more than the Blouse. There isn't a comparison between the two clubs regarding trophies won, our List of Honours compares with any clubs except Liverpool, Man United. 7 League Titles, 7 FA Cups, 5 League Cups and 1 European Cup. Regarding the Mendes rumour, it is on Tribalfootball, which is usually way off target, a little like our John Carew at the moment. Anyway thanks for giving me the first laugh of the day. CD is a Villa player, Villa have first refusal. He has signed - WBA do not want to pay the tax on receiving 27 Million in the months of July/August. It will go through next tax year, makes complete accountancy sense.

Son of a gun, the whole window is total nonsense, got up this morning to see SkySportsnews saying "15 hours, 56 mins and 23 seconds until the transfer window slams shut1". I am really pleased with the CD deal, fought off Spurs again. My two players for this summer were Davies and Okey Cokey and we've landed both. The RB situation is interesting. Based on what happened last year with Milner, I think our target(s) will depend on the selling team getting players in. Hoyte therefore looks a likely candidate.

Annoyed we ent signed at least one right back, we need to. And whoever is right back must face malouda or Joe cole. Would like to have seen at right mid to play with Barry, NRC and AY. MON said he WOULD build up the squad but no, dissapointed buti have faith in him!!

I have the faith and believe a right back will be signed by midnight. Either Hoyte or Rosienier, if not both. I then truely believe we have the strongest squad for years and good enough to qualify for Europe. Then we can attract the Defoe's etc to the club from Jan/next summer.

Pking, MON was with Davies and said there could possibly be another but he is happy with what he has got. This may indicate that we are waiting for another club to get someone in before they are willing to sell or that is it and nomore coming in. Have to be honest and say I will be disappointed if we don't sign a RB as this is an area for which we have needed someone since MON has been here.

Villa haven't had a quality defence for years, if we got a right back or maybe a left back we wud b talkin, strong mid and quick attack, cud do well, but its the size that will hurt us, the squad is way to small.

As things stand, MON only gets a 5 out of 10 mark for the transfer activity. Good quality young players in Hokey Cokey and Curtis (I'm not counting loanee Carson). Average squad player in Knight. Incomprehensible signing in Harewood. No RB is my biggest criticism. As others have pointed out, we've known about this for a VERY long time.

Ok so Carson,Curtis Davis,Zat Knight,Reo coker and Marlon Harewood.That makes 5 signings this transfer window and people are still p1ss1ng and moaning.Be realistic boys with the exception of stevie davis we have improved our playing squad greatly and that is without the promise of european football and at a reasonable cost.I admit i wanted a big name signing to excite but the strengh of the squad makes me very confident about therest of theseaon UTV bring on the bluenose fools and lets make them look like the second rate team they are.

I have to say Im not that upset about the RB slot,Id rather we hold on till next window and get some quality then get another Bardsley,Mellberg is a safer option at RB than Hughes I reckon and we have our reserves.If Davies has a rubbish season are we comitted to buying him I heard he signed a 4 year deal,is there a risk of someone nicking him next season?

Im exhausted now - only one thing left to say - UP THE VILLA. Welcome Harewood, Reo-Coker, Carson, Davies, Salifou and Knight. We will miss Hughes and Davis but lets get on with it starting with 3 points on Sunday!! We still have Berger to get fit and an on-form Maloney to look forward to.
