O'Neill Pledges Player Arrivals

Martin O'Neill has told the Birmingham Mail, in an article by Bill Howell, that he simply refused to be held to 'ransom' but says there is no desperation because, and I quote:

'We will have the players in by the end of the month. It's as simple as that.'

I know we've got fed up with the promises but that certainly looks like confidence and I guess, now we've waited this long, we may just as well hope and pray that at least 2-3 join us before August 31st, then we COULD push for Europe, although I'd still like to see a 20 goal a season striker in, I don't think any of ours will be able weigh in that heavily with goals - lets hope they prove that theory wrong!

The Villa boss further explained: 'It's been that sort of summer, but ever since the TV money came in everybody was pretty aware that TV money equals higher prices. I've said before that there is no desperation from me.'

He also admits we need a few defenders, especially a 'recognised full-back'.

He also says if he can't get his first choices in he has a number of alternatives.

So there you have it, fingers crossed and all that jazz!

cool I just saw a flying pig go past my window
Christo
I'd settle for him sending Petrov back to Celtic at the moment...
simonbigron
Fills me with fear that statement. Basically saying, I will try for about another 2 weeks to get the players I want and if all else fails I'll fill the squad with more Harewoods!
DeanoVilla
Yeah, whatever mate.
evoflash
Left it right to the last moment again. The Celtic fans who said he was like this, have been proven to be so right. Poor managment of the transfer window. If you were a player would you want to join a team with no points at the end of August because that is the position we are going to find ourselves in. What a joke, the man can motivate but he can't handle the window.
notthedougellisstand
Spend the money MON. Lerner has given you a significant budget and that has been publicised so prices are obviously going to be inflated. We should be buying the players you want not the damn alternatives.
Hoss The Villain
Deano that tells me something far worse than that, Harewood WAS a first choice option, imagine what the backup to him is....
shortshadyuk
And to make matters worse it seem we now have two want away goalkeepers if various reports are to be believed. The team is not strong enough and, if things stay as they are, then with a couple of injuries in the defence we will end up with no midfield. If as MON claims the right players are available then for goodness sake buy them, whatever the cost. Providing, that is, the money promised is available.
Obediah
Yeah, wish we'd bought like Spurs, then we would have spent 47m and still be sat at the bottom of the league.......Listen to Roy Keane, he has had players wives stopping them from ringing him back because there is no shopping or social hangouts in Sunderland, Birmingham isn't any better. This is why the transfer window has been s**te......if they don't want to come, they won't.....WAGs wear the trousers now I'm afraid...players will be hard to come by, you can't just spend 12m and make them come and play......its getting very frustrating......
astonmilan
We will know the answer by 31 August about the skill of MON's transfer dealings. I am concerned, but I do find MON's comments reassuring. We MUST trust that he knows what he is doing. There are very few players who have been transfered to date who we could have realistically gone for that I was disappointed we didn't get. My arguement is that we shouldn't have sold Hughes, Davis or Ridgewell UNTIL we had replacements in. By the way, well done to Roy Keane on his excellent comments about London and WAGS
krfeskivilla
RE: The Roy Keane comments: Would anyone here want to go and live in Sunderland??? It is only an improvement if you are a Scotsman (Craig Gordon.) Birmingham isin the centre of the Country, and has got to be far better.
Villan444
Nothing new here - players promised - but none arrive -
qKing
OOOOH I'm goona use that against him, a direct quote guaranteeing some sort of activity in the old dormant window. The nagain, i would be even more disappointed to wait and wait as we have and see some *****ty bloke in, hopefully this wait for quality will be just that and pay off
AussieVilla
Villa's fans are so sceptical... Try to imagine the situation, that you are the manager, you have significant budget, so you HAVE to HAVE an exact PLAN to sell your players and to have PLANNED BETTER replacement for them. Otherwise, you HAVE NOT to sell players...or if so you must be MAD :) I trust in MON. Do not be sceptical.
Majkee
old record however..............all we want is to be proven wrong. Proof is the key word, we have sighed 2 players and one on loan. MON has had since May to sort this out, it was wrong to let Ridgewell and Hughes leave before replacements defenders were in VIlla shirts. Petrov is proving to be an engima(ie he hasnt delievred), the Maloney rumours continue, Moore isnt even in the frame (despite an unwell Carew at the weekend). All of the above doesnt exactly fill me with confidence.....I fear the worse and hope I am wrong.
mptaylor
If that was his PLAN then it's a ***** plan!!!! Buy first, sell later - simple!
splatt
what i don't get, is in one of his recent interviews MON said that he had sold a "couple of players" and this had freed up some cash to bring in a few. That is worrying. Why would he need money ffs, what happened to randys millions? did anyone else read this because it confused the bjizzle out of me.
simonbigron
Damage has been done. We should now be looking to add the icing on the cake not still looking to find the ingredients Every other club that can has we must stick to the O'Neill tried and tested philosophy that has failed and failed and failed, ask any Leicester, Celtic fan or read the recent excellent Guardian article.
avfc48
I would quite like an un-iced fruit cake... In MON we trust. UTV
Hoss The Villain
I'm looking forward to you lot eating humble pie.
weller77
weller77 - that's a forlorn hope. Another 2 average signings if we're lucky and then I wonder how long it will be before he resigns.
villacross
There is another peculiar spin on this situation. Looking at the prices our ex-players were sold at it would seem they went at MON's valuation and not at the market value. Ridgewell for 2m goes straight in as captain of that lot and the others were seasoned internationals not hopefuls. Somehow the Villa values seems to be totally squiffy.
Obediah
Majkee - I don't understand what you say. Are you saying that O'Neill planned this shambles?
villacross
Obediah - glad you've picked on that point. O'Neill has seemed more intersted in clearing the decks than bringing in better replacements first. You will remember it started with Whittingham going last year for less than 400k - what a joke for an England U21 player.
villacross
O'Niell philosophy that has failed and failed and failed ???????? Leicester ????????? Celtic ???????????? At Leicester he worked wonders without money and an unsupportive board, at Celtic he took them back to No1 in Scotland and the UEFA Cup final, again without that much money, and a board that he had to prise it out of their fingers. Then his wife became ill and he left to support her. Leicester fans critisise because he left them, joined Celtic and then they went downhill, Celtic fans moan because thats what they do, moan. Lets face it, we all slag off O'Leary, so do Leeds fans. When I heard the Svengate tapes telling the Fake Sheik to buy Villa I was hoping he would !!!I personaly wanted Sven Goran Ericsson, but everybody laughed at me and said he was crap. He's not, Englands players were crap and unprofessional, thats why he is importing half of Europe into Eastlands, and will do well in the premiership. MON has got what it takes, he always leaves it late, bit like a poker player, lets hope he doesn't get bluffed or we are stuffed !!!! I have faith in him so far.........
astonmilan
The only thing that I don't like is this buy British stand, he doesn't like to have many foreigners........
astonmilan
Just like a game of poker? Well I hope we don't get dealt a dud hand... or even worse a Doug hand
Hoss The Villain
Hoss...he has always left it late......no good for our nerves though mate. I can't wait for the 31st, then its judgement time. Dud hand, we got the Joker last year 'PETROV' !!!! he better start performing, or else I see a pitch invasion coming on and removing him ourselves....... :-)
astonmilan
aston milan,i belive his thinkin with the homegrown players is that they r proven in the premiership, and if they can at least get us near the top 6teams,we then have a chance of recruitin some classy foreigners...or as some1on her once said,he got turned down4the england job,so hes just buyin all the next young english stars to make a point, but its defently encouraging, what hes sayin, lets hope its not all talk!UTV!
judgevillian
None of us "doubters" get any satisfaction from this tirade of criticism O'Neill is having to endure, but he is the architect of all this. I was and still am a supporter of MON, not just because I admire his honesty and humility but because he has an exceptional track record both as a player and a manager. I very much welcomed his arrival last year and I, like most other supporters marvelled at the motivational effect he had on the squad last season. We all applauded the January signings of Carew, Young and Maloney and the way he dug us out from the mid-season crisis brouught about by the deficiency in squad numbers from last November /December. But there it ends his performance in player dealings since May have, in my opinion been nothing short of disastrous and I shouldn't have to explain why that is my opinion. He started well enough with Reo Coker, followed by Harewood's signing, which seemed a good replacement upon Sutton's retirement. But that is it, not another "top-name" in sight and a current squad size which is a joke having released, transferred or retired 11 players. Where we go from here is out of everyone's hands. If he manages to attract the quality signings he has persistently promissed and now again confirmed on AVFC website, he truly is a messiah, and I will be the first to state that I will never doubt him again. If, on the other hand, he fails to deliver on this, his latest commitment, as an honourable man, I expect he will retire from football after adnmitting the fundamental flaw in his strategy these past few months. I pray he delivers as he has again promissed. UP THE VILLA
villacross
Here's the thing what would you do? 1) Porto want 10m for Boswinga, no guarantee that his agen is telling him to hold out for a club with European footie 2) The Baggies want 6mplus Moore for Davies? Well?
tarzan
no way should moore get sold...hes a future villa legend!
judgevillian
MON desn't appear to rate him!
tarzan
tarzan- 1. Make binding agreement with player (conditional on agreeing transfer fee with Club) Then 2. negotiate with Club on transfer fee. We never seem to get beyond 1. so I suspect we still have a "crap" wage structure for a club looking to become Top6.
villacross
Villacross, cant talk to a player without making an offer the club is prepared to accept, then they allow you to talk to the player, the other way round in known as tapping up
HuntysVilla
I can't wait for all the 'gun jumpers' to come back on here and moan after 31/8/07. I'm 100% behind MON and RL until it is proven that they have failed! It seems that fans have suddenly become experts in the transfer market. Remember last season when Berger had an argument with MON about who should manage the club? Berger was humbled! Come on, lets allow MON manage and support him all the way. Please please keep the faith.
Nigel-not-Reo
Well I think he has made mistakes. Simple question do you think MON is happy no then neither am I
LITTLE 77
HuntysVilla - obviously you can't talk to the player without the club's permission but there's little point making an agreement with the club on a fee if the player's not going to accept the terms. The point I am obviously trying to explain to you is that the Villa wage structure is too low compared with what needs to be paid to attract players here instead of going to at least another 6 Prem. Clubs so how the hell are we ever going to break into the top 6? Or don't you think that players are only interested in glory? This business of making bids for players, whether true or not, in my opinion is only a smoke screen when they know our wage structure is too low. That's the reason why SWP, Gordon and probably Curtis Davis have refused to come to AV.
villacross
villacross, its simpler than that you cant talk to the player before agreeing a fee with the club, the wage structure is a different issue i was just clarifying your earlier post, which was unworkable and not ethical, i dont know that the villa would not agree a salary structure with a players agent, if they wanted him, do you?
HuntysVilla
Patience seems to be the key! I know less than Mon about the transfer market. 15 or 20 mill for this player, and so on, Im glad he is no fool. Spuds paid out a fortune this summer, where are they? Would not like to play Mon at poker!!!
morky13villa
HuntysVilla - sorry to be such a pain on this but what you say implies that the Villa would not talk even talk to the player's agent about the terms they would offer the player if they could agree a fee with the Club. I also understood that Albion agreed for Davies to have talks with Villa when they clearly hadn't agreed a fee with us. So that under;ibes the point I made that we can talk and try to reach agreement with players (or their agents) before agreeing a fee with the club - always providing of course that the club has agrred to this. i dont know that the villa would not agree a salary structure with a players agent, if they wanted him, do you?
villacross
Martin sounds ultra-confident about bringing in the new faces he wants. That'll do for me. He's still THE MAN!!
glensider
He wanted Mellberg,Sorenson and McCanns contracts extended as soon as season ended,he wanted new signings before the Pre-season tour, none have happened - i don`t believe a word the bloke says to be honest,he just seems to ramble rubbish/cliches,i mean he wanted SWP last Jan but not in Summer?? I think he`s lost the plot but jesus can`t wait to be proven wrong.......
ASPINALL
everyone is going on like we have been duped. MON is slow out of the blocks but he is prone to that. something i find interesting is these names that have come up over the summer: hoyte, bosingwa, hangelande, davies, etc... have not signed anywhere else. yet.
leftfoot
Don't give a toss anymore............. this is the first time I've been bothered to look on the web to see if there are any rumours for a week. i will believe we have signed someone when it happens. UTV
*Holte*End*Star*
Well, if we do sign the players listed by leftfoot then I for one will be a happy bunny. They do still seem to be available.
Obediah
tap tap tap tap still waiting....... anyone else at loss as to why Villa can not seem to sign players?
col8
Will you all please stop whining. It's embarrassing, us Villans have a reputation for fickleness and whinging and I wonder why? We have the best manager we've had for 20 years, his activity in the transfer market to this point is more than acceptable, NRC, Young and Carew all quality first team signing, Harewood and Maloney good back ups and Petrov, whilst infuriating at the moment, is clearly talented, anyone who saw his debut at Upton Park will see that. This moaning and sniping at MON from people who clearly think they would do a better job at negotiating multi million pound deals with clubs, agents, players, chairmen and managers is pathetic. There have been Celtic fans on the site saying that MON always waits until the end of the window before getting his men, normally with a minimum of fuss, if that's how he rolls then just shut up and accept it. Get a grip and stop whinging you miserable feckers. And if Randy/MON/The General are reading this, please ignore these morons, they don't represent the true fans who see what you're doing for the club, appreciate it and will share the necessary patience until you get us back to where we deserve to be.
thesparkatron
well said theparkatron i could agree a statement more than i do with yours... I just wish these so called villa fans would stop and think about there endless moaning and whingeing. I just hope that Randy and co dont read this costant moaning. Just remember where we were and think where we are and going to be in the future. For the first time in 25 years we have good reason for real optimism. I was there and witness the most sucessful period in this clubs history and i just sense i will witness it again under the regime. once again i would like to say well said theparkatron.
gappy65
I agree with you gappy but life isn't always a bed of roses and people (with the exception of avfc48) don't moan without some sort of reason. The fans have a right to question the owners and manger from time to time and at the moment there is frustration within the ranks and questions being asked. I don't see why that should be a problem? All good businesses learn from their mistakes and pressure to achieve results, so saying all is wonderful all the time achieves nothing apart from self gratification.
Hoss The Villain
Anyone think that bids have gone in for Moore, Sorenson and Melberg? Today O'Neill is saying he intends to speak to them next week about their future, Seems a strange time to have to speak to players just 1 week before the transfer deadline. Why tell us this when he should know we're more interested who he is trying to buy. I wonder if he's ever considered keeping us in the picture and therefore by so doing, "kill-off all the rumour mongering"?
villacross
sparkatron no one expected us to go straight to the top. No one in there right mind expected world class players although we were promised them. However I and many others did expect a club of our size to be better prepared for the coming season. MON should have got players in before selling fact. MON should have ensured we have a RB at the club fact. Randy said we are going to be more aggressive in the transfer market. Has this happened? MON is a very good man manager he has shown that and I want him to be a super star for us and win silverware. I also think he is the best manager we could have at the moment but he has made mistakes that could cost the club. He does not seem to understand the transfer market and appears to be loosing his bootle or the plot!!
LITTLE 77
He`s our best manager for 20 years ? HA HA HA HA - How the f@@k do you work that out ? Taylor / Ron / Little ?? Gregory and O`Dreary you may be able to throw in the mix aswell.
ASPINALL
Little for me, loved Brian Little, the play was great and the excitement of the European nights is still with me! JG when he first came was also top class!
The Fear
Totally agree The Fear. Great football, prodused some very good teams but maybe was just too nice, if Little had a nastier streak he would have been here years. MON has loads of potential on his past record but early days in Villa career to say best manager we have had for 20 years. When we are in Europe every year and challenging for the cups or maybe more then yes he will be considered.
notthedougellisstand
Atkinson and Little for me in recent years. Both played entertaining football.
Hoss The Villain
Cant see too many clubs wanting to off-load their better players at this late stage of the window. Think MON is going to have more of a problem than he anticipates.
