Villa Defender Talk!

Villa Defender Talk!

Sweden international defender Olof Mellberg could well be on the verge of a new deal at Villa after telling the official site:

'It's in the hands of my agent and the club. With the season just started, everyone just wants to focus on that. I see the club really moving in the right direction and I want to be part of it. When you've been at the club for a long time, it's nice to see some changes and that's happened - especially last season with the new owner and the new manager.'

The bearded one also says that the changes have been positive with a new training ground adding 'it feels good, especially for us players who have been with the club for some time. It's always nice to see positive changes. It's almost like being at a new club and with the change in players.'

He also backs fellow defensive rock Martin Laursen to get over the own goal he scored against Liverpool.

He said: 'The partnership with Martin Laursen has been going really well, but the own goal was so unfortunate. We have an almost telepathic understanding - it feels really good playing together. We enjoyed playing together last season when we played quite a few games and that carried on in pre-season. We know each other's game inside out and we know each other well off the field as well, which helps. We're very good friends off the pitch and we get along really well. It feels right and we seem to suit each other well. He wants to have a season where he plays every week and that's what he's looking at.'

Meanwhile some reports are suggesting that Villa target Curtis Davies is set to join Tottenham Hotspurs. Time will tell, but it certainly looks like the Baggies defender is on the move.

I'd just like to hear Mellberg and Laursen bring Cahill into the loop as he is also a vital member of this three man central defensive team.

Oh come on Melly get a room for gods sake!!! Melly wants Laursens babies! lol

If Davies goes to Spurs he's a fool and i'll be well *****ed off with. Spurs already have loads of young centre backs. He lives near Villa Park so wont need to move house, its makes perfect sense to come to Villa and play more regulary.

Pay the money before Laursen and Cahill both get injured.
14/08/2007 12:38:00
Only 3 CB's at the club, one of which is injury prone and another running out the last year of his contract. One RB who is on long term sick and ready to retire and one experienced LB. A year on and not one defender has been added to our squad to build for the future or replace the ones who have left.

If we were getting Davies, we would have him already. This club is not bringing anyone else in, lets face it. We are going with what we have. If we make Europe, maybe we'll start bringing in players next year. Probably not though.

Thats what I like to see Scot.....plenty of optimism....

There seems to be something seriously wrong at Villa Park at the moment. If you look at the top four teams and our other, so called, serious rivals, Spurs, Everton and Portsmouth, to name but three, any one of those seven clubs could put out a 'reserve' side that could give our team a good run if not beat us. As Hoss The Villan points out the defender situation at Villa Park is dire. But, what do we get from The Official Site, why, vague promises to the furture and no real news whatsoever. We also have a very good young midfielder, Gardner, who would die to pull on a Villa shirt and is willing to play in any position as long as he is wearing the shirt. declare his willingness to play RB. That's good, but not good enough, he is wasted in that position particulaly when other midfielders, such as Petyrov, are off their game. We need at least four defenders now, but ,given that all the best have moved on, we will be left with the dregs at an inflated price or paying double the value for the Porto RB, because they know we need him. I've given up reading The Official Site because there is no real news and promises to the future are useless. Come on MON sort it out, please.

Perhaps they should put Doug in charge of recruitment....

I think Craig Gardner has great promise and it would be a real pity to see him not part of the first choice eleven on the 'play your best players rule'. If Reo Coker does the business too, then even if Gardner may not seem ideal as a right back if he is as good as I hoppe he is, his positional sense will improve and he could be the solution. Converting Kenny Swain to a full back after he had spent much longer in midfield was a master stroke by Ron Saunders that worked big time. This hopeful speculation doesn't alter anythng in terms of Villa's crying need for a new right back. Point is though, that if we can't get anyone of obvious top quality I would prefer to give Gardner a try and buy a decent cover player- potentially much more readily available and obtainable. Aaron Hughes, of course, in these circumstances would have fit the bill!
