'If It's Football, It's Vital'

O'Neill and Benitez Reactions

Martin O'Neill said after the 2-1 loss to Liverpool:

'It's very, very disappointing. Once we got the equalising goal, with six or seven minutes to go, I felt we might go on to win it against a very fine side. But then we conceded the free-kick from which they scored and it was pretty disappointing. They're a fine bunch of players, they just need a wee bit more self-belief. I think I've got more belief in them than they have just at this moment. But that will be fine. They're a very young side who are grouping well together. There's a good spirit there and this disappointment today will not knock them.'

Adding on the official site: 'I'm pleased with the effort that the side put in, I'm pleased with the application. Obviously against a quality side like Liverpool there were moments in the game, possibly prolonged moments when we were on the back foot, but we'll address that. The atmosphere was absolutely terrific. The crowd got right behind us from start to finish. I thought they played a part in getting us back into the game and I thought that was very encouraging.'

Rafa 'Tom Jones' Benitez (seriously man, get a proper shave!) told their official site, Liverpoolfc.tv:

'We deserved to win the game and it was a special goal from Gerrard. We showed great character after Villa were given a penalty and we kept going forward and got the goal. It was important for us to win the first game. I know we created a lot of chances but you have to say the Villa goalkeeper was really good and he was the man of the match. I thought Torres did well and worked hard and his understanding with Kuyt was really good.'

MON seems to have a fair assessment. I personally thaught that once we had equalised then we should have held on. A great free kick by Gerrard but it should never have been given. I know people make mistakes but the ref was 10 yards away. How close do they need to be to see clearly. MON should also have said Pennant is a jailbird cheating ******* but he didnt.

Mon is making excuses, and its just the first game. I'm seriously beginning to worry about any manager who says such rubbish Their first goal was exactly what happens when a poorly prepared side starts a season If we had played for 2 days we wouldn't have gone on to win, especially with an ill centre forward playing route one tactics. When managers, especially O'Neill start offering such tripe the writing is nearly on the wall. He'd better pull out some startling moves soon or come Xmas he'll be looking for a new club.

Why was it 42,000 other people knew what Gerrard was goign to do and only 11 blokes in Claret and Blue who did not.

We were beaten by a much better side. That's how I saw it anyhow. Their keeper never had a shot to save throughout the entire game, and apart from the spot kick, we never looked capable of scoring.

glensider - spot on. MON needs to buy quality - replace Petrov with maloney - EVEN A BLIND MAN CAN SEE THIS!

Gotta agree with the route 1 tactics comment, it was awful at times! Lump the ball to Carew! But why???? His knock downs always went to Liverpool players, so whats the point?

High ball tactics aimed for Big JC to flick on aint gonna work if he doesn't have a player feeding off him. Silly-Billy Martin. Tactics leave a lot to be desired, as does squad depth, as does lack of quality, as does etc. etc. etc.
