A Tale Of Two Keepers For Villa!

According to reports today Villa have beaten off Sven Goran Eriksson's Manchester City for the signing of Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Unfortunately the signing of the England U21 star is a one year loan deal, but hey ho, he's a good keeper!

The deal will apparently cost Villa in the region of 2.5million + the players wages. Not bad business by Liverpool there then!

The Mirror claim that Rick Parry (Anfield's chief exec) preferred the Villa option because he felt Man City wanted to buy Carson. They further claim 'O'neill agreed to take Carson under strict orders to return him at the end of the season and make no effort to make the deal permanent.'

Meanwhile the Daily Star claim Villa are set to bid 3million for Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. Jussi has just one year left on his contract at Bolton, has refused to sign a new deal and has called the clubs bluff by saying he'll sit out his final year and leave next summer on a free.

I's prefer Jussi!
In MON we trust!
I would prefer Carson, although i would like there to be the possibility of a permanent deal. Carson is a fantastic long term proposition. If we play our cards right and Liverpool dont miss him by the Jan transfer window then maybe we could make a decent offer for him then despite what Parry is saying. Either way though its positive to be linked with 2 keepers of this quality.

Agreed - either would be nice. if we get carson for a year, jussi can wait his contract out for us to come in in 12 months time! Have it.
The Usual Suspect
I'd prefer both :D
VillaCrazy
If we do get him will Liverpool be able to recall him any time?
Pking
Hmmmm - hardly smacks of being cash rich does it ? - Come on admitt it were skint. Don't think Carson is a good keeper - its just the liverpool factor
qKing
I said last night that I liked the idea of seeing how we get on with Carson by Jan - if good put a bid in and get him permanent. If not offer Jussi a big contract and have him sign it and agree to join at the end of season!!

Don't think Carson is a good keeper ? ......are there any better ones on Mars mate ?
astonmilan
You never know Carson might fall in love with someone or something and will want to stay with us
Christo
Hmmmm... 2.5 mill for an average keeper with little experience for 1 year, or 3 mill for a very good keeper with lots of experience on a permanent deal??? Hard decision. NOT!

More U21s on the way, Charlton player of the year, (admittedly not saying much as Charlton were useless ,) also was very poor in the penalty shoot out against Holland.

if we get Carson for one year and he contributes towards a side that gets a UEFA cup spot, i'd say it would be a good bit of business.

Not a big Carson fan, think he's very over-rated, and I'm even less of a fan of the loan deal scenario. Much sooner prefer we buy a keeper, but sadly we're in desperate waters, and we dont have too many options open to us. Rafa has re-iterated yet again that Carson's long term future lies on merseyside, so come next summer we're back in the same old mess again. What are we doing? Simply buying time it looks like, but buying time for what? Seems to me that the powers that be at B6 haven't been keen to come up with the asking prices this summer, but whether prices will lower next close season is open to debate. In the meantime we set out our stall for another season of mediocrity.

how about both of them? or Carson loan for season, Jussi on a free next season.

Just seen the new team photo on the official site, we can't get any players, we have got more coaching staff than players

qKing - Hardly smacks of being cash rich!?!?! I think paying 2.5 million for a ONE YEAR LOAN does totally smack of being cash rich. You don't pay 2.5 million (plus wages) for a player for one season if you are skint.
Adam Deuce
I wonder if that 2.5 loan fee would be applied should Rafa completely have a reversal of opinion next summer and decide that Carson doesn't figure in his future plans? I hope we've done some hard bargaining here, cause Tommy S isn't going to sit around playing second fiddle to anyone, while Stuart T is not going a further demotion too lightly.

DeanoVilla is spot on - 3m for a seasoned proven keeperv 2.5m for a youngster who might be really good or might not be in the end, he is too inexperienced to tell yet. Problem is if he is good then Liverpool will keep him anyway. An early move for Gordon should have been the way forward, and Carson smacks of a move on the rebound. Obviously hope he does great, but Gordon or Jaskeleinnen could have been good for a few years. Let's hope we get a top quality right back. Huge confdence in Luke Moore and Craig Gardner though and IF Laurrson can keep fit things could be good.
stennyvilla
Agreed stennyvilla, Craig Gardner is improving in leaps and bounds, a superb prospect. Not sure he's a capable right full back though, so the sooner we get a specialist in for that position, the better.
