More Villa Links - Collective Yawn?

Few links today, papers have been full of them in the last few days to be truthful but I think I'm turning into a grumpy old git because I'm not really interested in reading about links, I want to be reading about players signing and being ready for the new season in claret and blue.

West Brom's captain (or former captain after asking for a transfer I assume) Curtis Davies is still being linked to us and Spurs. He has stated that he wants out and reports say that we are in the hunt. One goes so far as to say we have offered 6million + 1m in add ons whereas Spurs have offered 5million + Wayne Routledge. If WBA set his price at 9 odd million at the start of the transfer window, why will they drop the price now though?

A report in The Mirror by James Nursey, Villa and Sunderland have apparently been joined in the 'race' for Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordeon. The Scottish international, valued at a record breaking 9million, has had a medical and Sunderland and talked to the Black Cats manager Roy Keane. He is now due to talk to Villa. Both clubs have apparently offered 6m + 3m in add-ons.

Some reports are suggesting that the 24-year-old will make a decision today. That said, reports and rumours over the weekend suggested Villa were announcing a new signing on Monday, so to be fair, it looks like everyone is grappling in the dark and most are scratching their heads at the lack of decisive action from the Villa boss.

Scotland manager Alex McLeish is fully behind the keeper moving to the Premiership saying: 'It would be a great move. It would be fantastic for Craig as long as he plays and I don't think anyone who is willing to pay 9m for Craig Gordon is going to make him a substitute. Nothing against Hearts but this is the chance of a lifetime to go to the Premiership.'

Meanwhile The Telegraph claims Villa are set to make a 2million bid for England U21 and Arsenal fullback Justin Hoyte.

If we could sign all three then I would be much happier. Has anyone heard anything more on Boswinga and Hangeland ? Seems to have gone quiet on those two.
Things just seem to drag and drag and drag with the Villa no matter who is in charge, its just the Villa way!
All gone very quiet, very strange....hmmmm i wonder.
I signed Hoyte on championship manager but he couldn't get in the squad but if we went for a arsenal player maybe get Fabagas or whatever he is called.
Christo are you having a laugh ? Fabregas is one of the best young players in the Premiership and Arsenal's best player. Firstly, Do you think he is going to want to join us ? Secondly, Arsenal are not going to sell him after selling Henry this summer. Fabregas may move next summer but it will be to either Barca or Madrid.
Christo - Do you mean Flamini?
Don't care! MON just sign him along with Gordon and Davis, we will all sleep a little better. UTV
Er yes, I would guess that was i-ronnie
Silver Fox
cant see Arsenal selling Hoyte for 2 mil.
Hoyte that is and not Fabregas (we can but dream)
Silver Fox, from reading other comments from Christo I velieve he was being deadly seriously and wouldn't know irony if it bit him.
should be believe not velieve
Jon as per your email, I wake up every morning and the 1st thing I do before even getting out of bed is to put on Sky Sports News! But every day goes by just like every week and I see we have only signed 1 player, Reo Coker. (I'm not countin Harewood on principle). Surely there's another Celtic misfit we can buy who will go straight into O'Neils squad?!!
Days are counting down and still only 1 decent transfer. Forget the rumours and links lets have some bodies at bodymoor
See that Everton have signed Baines. I think that they'll be dark horses this year, i like the way they go about it, quietly and efficiently. I guess that's the drawback in having a high profile manager in MON in that every link is widely reported whether true or not and builds expectation and inevitably disappointment if nothing happens regardless as to whether we were really in for the player or not. When you consider the number of players we have been linked with MON could spend all day every day just denying rumours. However what he has said is that he's still after his first choice targets and has back up options if he can't get them. So we have to be patient still and wait and see. I still have faith that we will have a strong squad by the end of the window.
That's a shame ... it was quite funny otherwise!!! On the transfer front I think part of the problem is that agents realise there are several clubs in that level below the Top 4 - Villa, Newcastle, Spurs, West Ham and now Man City who have new money to spend and they're holding out for the best deals for their players.
Silver Fox
... several players are simply being touted around these new-money clubs and the whole process is taking forever. I still trust MON to come up with a couple of decent players before the end of the window though.
Silver Fox
I need some relief from all this. You can imagine the rebellion if we get drilled by Redscouse on Saturday and pick up a few injuries. Can't imagine the prices are going to go down. MON does appear to be backing down from his confident stance at the weekend
10 out - 2 in, doesn't look great which ever way we dress it up
The frustration just keeps growing. I think we are all waiting to sigh a huge sigh of relief when/if we finally sign another player. I still think we need at least 4 players (GK, 2xRB, CB). Gordon/Jaaskelianen, Hoyte, Boswinga and Davies would do for me. I know they would probably cost us between 20m-25m but I firmly believe the money is available.
8m for curtis davies? are you joking, if he had a seriously good couple of prem seasons behind him then perhaps, 8m buys u a very good defender these days on the continent metersacker etc standard, the 9m on a goalie is befiddling too but to be fair good goalies are rare so if we spot one of the carson ability we should fight tooth and nail to have him, but a Centre back who is going to be backup for8m is a joke, Laursen wont be displaced unless he gets hurt, Olly perhaps but i doubt he'd sit on a bench for long
Curtis at CB and Olly out at RB ... discuss!
Silver Fox
Lee Barnett is right, get your finger out MON and do the job you're paid for FFS!!! lol
Whenever I've seen Sweden play - which admitedly isn't that often - Olly has been at RB. I don't think he can cross the ball well enough and we'd have the same problem that we had in the first half on Saturday with Cahill ... an athletic RB but no end product when goping forwards

I've seen quite a few comments, both on this board and in the press, about 8-9 million being excessive 'for a goalkeeper'. Personally, I've never understood why strikers go for huge prices and GKs not. In my opinion, a really good GK is just as important as that rampant striker. It isn't just a question of stopping goals and commanding the area - a really good GK is what you build the whole of your play on. A really good GK is what gives your team the confidence to go forward as a unit, without wondering what might happen if there's a breakaway. A really good GK should be the FIRST piece of the jigsaw puzzle, not the last.
Totally agree Silver Fox. Mellberg is a CB. I have never understood why he plays RB for Sweden. He lacks that extra burst of pace that a fullback should have and cannot cross the ball. Let him do what he does best and play him and CB. He has already said he can't wait to play against Torres, I think he may just give Torres a kick to welcome him to English football. We should only play him at RB if West Ham play Ljungberg on the left. Now that would be fun to watch
no we proberly dont have a chance of getting gassybut its nice to think so no need for you all to get all stupid over it
Wake up and smell the coffee you lot, this transfer window has been a complete and utter disaster. MON is having a laugh and if he was anybody else we would be calling for his head by now.
Christo mate I think it's a bit rich you calling anyone else stupid!
If all you want is for MON to sign players to make up the numbers, then I take it you would be happy with Mills, Dabo and Dickov from Citeh!
yea and I guess it was out of line so sorry but there is no need for people to have a go at me anhd am not being stupid am just saying things about players I'd like at villa thats all and saying what I think
Its took Moyes 5 weeks to sign Baines, Allardice is still trying to get players in, basically the clubs and agents of anyone who is decent keep moving the goalposts, MON said today that they have been after a certain player, were in talks, then all of a sudden the fee shot up to a stupid price, so he pulled out, now the club has got back in touch trying to sell ?? this is what has been happening for weeks now. Its not just us, its Newcastle, Everton and Spurs aswell. Spurs have been lucky in the fact that agents offer them players first, but they are in Europe, and thats how it goes in football. Lets hope Gordon is more impressed with our facilities than Sunderlands.
astonmilan is Gordon really going to look at our place? No one knows what's going on, that's the most frustrating part.
well according to SSN he is going to sign for Irishland tonight
So he hasn't talked to us etc... That was all rubbish?
Tarzan, presume you can read the same websites as the rest of us. Seems that he has spent time at Sunderland ,maybe or maybe not had a medical according to which reports you believe. Is rumoured now to be sniffing around Villa Park and meeting MON this evening. Then I guess we wait 24-48 hours for him to make his decision. Both clubs have had their offers accepted, so it's just a question of who he likes the look of I guess. I would really struggle to see why he would go to Sunderland over us though, I really do, so at the moment - relatively optimistic that MON can do a good convincing job on him. Anyone seen them down at the Holte Hotel having a pie and a pint???
Christo, keep on posting what you're posting bud. Some of your observations and comments are classics, help get us through these dreary never ending days of transfer inactivity. Where do you dream some of the stuff up though? As for the never ending rumours upon rumours, they're all getting old now. Four days to go to the big kick-off, and here we are, lacking quality players in key positions, and possessing a squad that numbers wise is fewer than it was at the end of the last campaign. Now is perhaps not the time to conduct a post-mortem into what has gone wrong this summer, but up to the time of writing, our efforts have been little short of a complete and utter shambles.
Craig Gordon has been in Sunderland since yesterday apparently, if he was going to sign for them it would be happening right now or already of happended. He knows where he is going, saving the best till last. Its only a good thing nothing has been anounced as far as Sunderland are concerned - relax CG is on his way here. UTV Trust.
Just saw on ITV teletext that he is now in talks with us
We`ve " eyed up " more players than Matty Upson.
Aspinall. Made me chuckle
Sky Sports News say Gordon signed for Sunderland tonight. Another one bites the dust?
Don`t worry bud,we`ll be linked, lining or eyeing up another one tomorrow!
I'd prefer Jussi anyway! Gordon must want to be busy. Hope he doesnt get backache!!!!!!
From picking balls out of his net, I mean!!!!!!
"Don`t worry bud,we`ll be linked, lining or eyeing up another one tomorrow"! - ASPINALL And aint that just the truth. Plenty of talk, absolutely no action.
And MON has confirmed the same thing!!! GROUNDHOG DAY !! glensider-love the picture man.
Not sure if I will trust MON because he has said it all before
She's a cutie aint she ASPINALL. I interviewed 30 young ladies for the honour of being my avatar. It was a tough days work, but she won.
