I must admit I'd hoped we'd have been talking about the great signings we've made by now, instead we are still getting the manager saying they are working hard to bring in new players. Oh well, there is always tomorrow, or the day after I guess! At least we know there is money there to spend once players can be attracted, just got to hope that the fact we aren't in Europe this coming season isn't proving to be a major block on big name arrivals. We need at least one big name to put down a marker for the season surely?
Anyway, here continues the rumours thread on the front page. See a story linking us with a player? Share it with us all. Heard a tenuous link, or seen a player around Villa Park? Let us know! Oh, and although I'll do my best to announce incoming players as soon as possible, if you hear of a signing before I do, wang it on this thread as well.

I`ve seen alot of Hangeland over the years, and I think we should definately go for him at £3 m. He is a tall, good header of the ball, relatively fast and technically able CB, who can also contribute going forward. Spent a great season at Copenhagen, and played a big part in them qualifying for the CL. He could sort of be resembled to a mix of melly and laursen, with good passing ability..

o'neill seems to be building good morale though. allardyce said it would be a disaster if he signed no one else - surely thats poor man-management!? it can't be building the confidence of the squad.

Whichever way you look at it I think tactically MON has got it wrong. I also think that at this stage of the season we should have played more than 2 games. We are lagging behind on fitness and bonding on the pitch. Unlike other teams MON wants to handle every aspect of the transfer, this has been mentioned by the OS. This makes it all the more galling he was in the USA at a crucial time. Knowing this I feel we should have been more active in the keeper & RB department before we left. We're playing Stoke tonight and if Taylor gets injured where is the keeper coming from for the Milan game. It's Thursday tomorrow! I'm not pessimistic and hope not too negative, just a little bemused. UTV

i just read something that west ham have spent 22 million and have received 21 million. For some reason it makes me jelous becuase villa should and can spend money like that on good players to push us forward. Every article i read it's about west ham wanting gudjohnson, dyer and now smith. these players apart from dyer should be the players that we should be going in for.

What is goin' on? I would have thought after last season a strong start to the campaign is essential. With the squad we have (which is way weaker this year) a few injuries/loss of form/poor results could mean a dog fight like last year. How can it be ideal to buy players when the season ahs already started? I'm keeping the faith but the lack of info and the percieved drop in expectation levels makes it vey hard. Value for money is only found in results so come on lets spend and get those results.

Looks like Bouma at centre-back - perhaps Matty Taylor is on his way to play left-back!!! OR!!! How about a 3-5-2 with the following: GK (whoever that may be) LCB Bouma CB Laursen RCB Mellberg CM Reo-Coker Petrov Barry LW Young RW Agbonlahor ST Carew Moore. That seems good to me!!! GB, NRC and SP are all decent defensively - if they provide good cover and mix up the attacking duties a little that could be a decent side!!!

I'm hoping Inter put out a strong line-up on Saturday, and provide us a real test to assess how far we have come since the end of last season. UTV!

BAZZA thats what I mean about the three central midfielders needing to defend. I would imagine on defence GB could drop back a little to cover Bouma and Young. I would hope Petrov or NRC could do the same on the right to cover Mellberg and Agbonlahor. I think the same with the cover out the flanks but I think that is better than having Gardner cover at RB!!! Im my opinion Olejnik, Hughes and even Samuel should have been kept at the club until replacements were bought. Drenthe was linked around the time Hughes left - i fully expected to see on avfc.co.uk that Drenthe was in. I think its daft letting players go for just £1m with no alternatives in the squad.

I was listening to the commentary of the match on Villa World tonight and the guy with Jack Woodward was saying that he had interviewed MON yesterday and got the impression that there might not be any new arrivals until after the season starts. Might as well pack this thread up for a week or two!

Sorry myleftfoot, but how is our squad 'way weaker this year'? The players who have gone have not raised any eyebrows, with the possible exception of Davis, and it sounds as if he didn't really fancy staying unless he was guaranteed a regular place. On the other hand, we start this season (over last August) with Ashley Young, John Carew, Sean Maloney, Nigel Reo-Coker and Marlon Harewood. Sounds like a far stronger squad to me, but maybe I'm having a hot flush! :o)

BobTheBuilder - Quality at the mo is far superior - just the numbers are a concern. The other thing is I'm just dissappointed about the lack of quality players being signed. I'll be slightly annoyed if there are no new additions b4 the start of the season as well. I still have faith in MON to come good tho.

I am convinced that we will sign players before the deadline. All we hear out of Villa Park is the fact that they are working hard to get the right players for the right money. This has to be good although i feel that MON may have to revise what he believes to be the right money. Thanks to a few teams especially West Ham and Spurs the cost of players has definately increased in the closed season.
Leaving purchases until late can obviously inflate a player price also as selling clubs thrive on your desperation.

Going on tonights game the right back position really stood out, especially second half when a half decent team would of battered us, Taylor is back up at best, I know it was a makeshift defence but a proper test comes saturday.

Alot of people on here seem to be doing things like forgeting, Panicing and worrying themselves into an early grave. I would like to point out the forgeting part yes we do have a small yes and yes we have only signed two players but whaqt about our youth squad we have onje of the best youth teams in the country and have alot of good young players in the reserves so maybe were not signing many because Martin wants to put players from the reserve and youth into the first team in last nights game we gave debuts to two young villians and we are going around signing aload of 15 year olds who am sure will be the best or near enough and I know they wont play right away but we just have to wait a few years so its not like nothing is being done. We may have positions in our squad that need filling but maybe Martin O'Neil has made up his mind about who he will put there and its not someone from another club so really am just saying relax am sure everything is under control. ( I did this as an artican but it wouldn't let me post it)

lol yea am not much good at writing sentences I went to a really horrible school. and Tarzan as for waiting a few years yes but what I also ment is that the youth that are 18-20 will also be getting into the first team now so maybe that is what Martin is doing but he wil buy other players in that time aswell but unless any of us can turn into flys and go into his office or wherever we will never what what is happening at the moment am sure you wouldn't go shouting to the world what you were leaving your house to buy

I just HAVE to hold on to the (grasping) thought that if we were not in for even a sniff around Young that HAS to mean MON has something better lined up - I really can't believe that we wouldn't have been in for him at this stage if there wasn't another alternative already in the bag. See MON's transfer dealing's at Celtic, very interesting reading. He wasn't one for spending cash at all, Sutton, Thompson, Lennon and Hartson only deals of note. He spent nothing after they got to the UEFA cup final, which really got the Celtic fans back up. All his deals must be tempered with the fact they already had Larsson at the club when he arrived. Aaron hughes was only slightly better than having no fit RB. Soon we'll have a better option.

I'm not being negative at all Christo - if you see one of my recent posts i'm actually quite positive about the state of the team - i.e. our starting eleven (minus of course a recognised RB). I absolutely take issue with your statement though that we have a great squad - that's very naive IMO. If that's the case then please explain to me why we were playing Osbourne at RB last night against Stoke?

What the ***** is going on ? Now Ridgewell looks like he is going. We are not going to have a squad of 16 let alone 20 by the time the season starts. I am really****ed off with the whole situation now. Sven started at Man City three weeks ago and has signed 6 players in that time. MON stated that he wanted a full pre-season to do what he wants, well here it is and he has far reduced one of the smallest squads in the Premiership to even fewer. Now I agree that majority of the players that have moved would not be part of the first team squad anyway but its not looking like a msterplan now. As for MON being the messiah we must be *****ing mental.

eh? We've got a GK Tarzan, albeit not a top notch one. Most worrying for me is RB, and then purely just lack of numbers in the squad. Surely something has to be done now...it's definitely getting a bit hairy now eh? To me (ever the optimist) the position is starting to look so bad now that I can only think it is a sure sign that things are already in motion to boost the numbers up at last! Well I think he has made a mess of the summer dealings, no other club has sold like us without bringing additional players in, we seem to be an easy touch for other clubs. We were told things by both the board and manager that have not happened. We have tried tried to get players but they would not come or we will not pay wages/transfer fees. We are in a very bad way and each day that passes it gets worse. The buck stops with Martin and the board.

Little - IF MON is done signing players then we will be in for a bumpy ride. I believe he isn't done. He has gone on the record as saying we need a RB and hopefully 2 further players (Probably a keeper and a CB). He wouldn't state this in the press if he isn;t aware of the situation and making moves to rectify it. Time will tell if i am correct or not, but I'm confident he'll get the players in. It would have been nice to get them in sooner, i'll agree - but it aint like buying a cd.

Kilmarnock have criticised Celtic for offering 2 mill for Naismith, having it accepted and then no contact. It is believed this is because they are at advanced stages with Maloney! A fee of 1 mill is suggested. They ripped us off for Petrov so why should we sell for 1 mill. We got him cheap because he had a year left.

The line-up for the Liverpool game will probably feature Olly at RB up against Babbel who apparently flying at pool. I don't fancy that because it will mean one of the CB's won't be Olly! Whether it's Laursen, Cahill, Bouma or Hangeland, backed by Taylor in goal. This shouldn't have happened.

I know we can take the p*ss out of Delaney and Djemba leaving - I am of the opinion that you need two players at least in any one position. I can understand letting Djemba go as of last season Petrov, Barry, Osbourne, Gardner, Davis, Hendrie and now Reo-Coker would have had to be injured to get a game. But look at the other releases - Hughes, Ridgewell and Davis would admittedly have one player preferred to them but they are certainly second choice in their positions. I dont think those three should have been sold. Also, I would be a lot happier if Olejnik was on the bench v Liverpool than Bevan!!! Lets just hope we can have two per position by season kickoff!

If CG isnt confirmed as a Sunderland player by 2.30pm or so he must then be talking to us this evening. Basically, the longer this drags on today the better for us!!! As far as I know the press are saying in talks with both clubs. I cant see much (other than Villa forums) that suggest Sunderland is the most likely destination!! Anybody got any more secure information??

AVFC Blog report that Curtis Davies has been seen at Villa Park and has had a medical prior to an announcement this afternoon. I do stress that this is all speculation at the moment.

Foster will be Man Utd number 1 by the end of the season. If we dont get Gordon we may keep our fingers crossed for Carson or Jussi. I feel our next keeper will be one of those three or Itandje. I can not see anyone other than that in this transfer window. That is why I hope we get Gordon.

I dont think that the 'settle into the premier league' argument applies to goalkeepers really. Its more about having a repetoir of skills to become as 'complete' a player as possible. He has proven himself as a top keeper as domestic and international keeper. Schmeichel and Cech played for average teams before Man U and Chelsea and have been amazing in the Premiership. I think that as a young team captain he will appeal to MON. Curtis Davis too - young, captain and English!!

Also, why is Boruc worth twice what Gordon is worth?? Surely attracting attention at Celtic is easier than at Hearts?? I will admit I dont know lots and lots about both but I have a few mates who are Scottish football fans rate them both highly. Gordon is young, widely admired and a good captain. Dont get me wrong, Boruc would be good but Gordon can happen today!!! I think MON had intended to wait and take Jussi on a free at the end of the season. Now he NEEDS a GK and of those available Gordon could be the best option.

Sky news are reporting the medical reports. Just can't see why he would have a med if he wasn't going to sign. Surely you would wait and then decide which team and then the medical? Perhaps it saves time should he decide Sunderland. I don't know but for me he's signing for Sunderland. This may mean any approach for another keeper is seen by that keeper as second choice.

Newman Gordon looks a good keeper, I have a friend who's a Hibs supporter in Scotland. He said that Gordon is outstanding keeper, and in his view will be a revelation. But I think we may have something to say about Davies, we've been chasing him a long time. So I can't see us giving him up without a fight

Gordon will not sign for SUnderland. Sky Sports News and BBC website are carrying conflicting information. SSN state Gordon will sign for Mackems tomorrow but BBC state that Man City are now considering a bid for him. I'm going out on a limb and stating Gordon will be a Villa player by Thursday.

I must agree with eltoro, this whole transfer saga is turning into a farce. Given the so called and much vaunted management skills that are supposed to have been gathered at VP this is becoming riddiculous. At present, squad wise, we are in a worse position than this time last year. With two or three critical injuries we will be in one hell of a mess, particularly in defence. We must pay the going rate for the players, not what MON or others think is the value of a player. If we don't we are blown.

No one knows what's going on here. The one person I'd like to be in this situation is Gordon's agent! I can't believe how difficult the transfer process is becoming. If we don't sign anyone before the new season starts, it will be fine; only on the proviso we get some decent results, otherwise the clamour for new names will turn into a crisis. Let's face it, the Coker deal nearly got pulled at the 11th hour and Harewood was a last minute capture from under the noses of Wigan. It's so hard without the carrot of CL footie.

The only reason I can see Gordon signing for Sunderland is that he wants to be the automatic first choice keeper. I wonder if MON will give him this guarantee. Might get shot down for this, but what hell - it's my opinion. None of the signings (or links for that matter) have really set me on fire. I don't know quite what I was expecting, but I'm disappointed with the signed and the might signs. Is anyone else feeling the same? Davies is ok I suppose - haven't in fairness seen much of him. Was excited by the two Dutch kids in truth, but that's about it.
