Olof Mellberg Hints At Villa Exit

Olof Mellberg has hinted that he might look to see out his contract and move to America.

The Sweden international defender, who has been at Villa 6 years since joining from Racing Santander, has just one year left on his contract.

He told the Daily Star:

'Yes, I have talked about the possibility of playing in North America. Since Beckham signed, lots of players have talked about MLS as being a place to play.'

I hope not, he'll only be 30 come the end of the season and should have plenty more to offer at Villa. Wouldn't be good to see another player able to leave on a free either. Thomas Sorenson also has just one year left on his contract. Hmmmm.

He certainly seems taken with the whole package that MLS would offer him. Who can blame him at this stage of his career? On the evidence of the two games I've seen him play over here (Toronto on t.v., Columbus as a spectator) he's looked as if he still has something to offer us, particularly as we rebuild for the future, but maybe come seasons end, when his contract ends, we should allow him to move on. Lets see what this season brings perhaps, but maybe its time to consider bringing in a new central defender, or giving Gary Cahill more opportunities to make the position as partner to Martin Laursen his own.

i know many will disagree with me but i dont thik hes that good, so i wouldnt be too upset if we could get a top quality centre back in!

Mellberg does not say anywhere that playing in the MLS is imminent! Maybe at the end of another 3 year contract as he would still be young enough to play out there at 32/33.

I think that this is a non story. He was asked his opinion on the MLS whilst on tour over there, said some nice complimentary things about it and now people are saying he is moving over there imminently.

villasw - wash your mouth out with soap and water! The caveman can shut down almost anything that tries to get past him. If he had another genuine quality partner at the back (not one gaining experience or coming back from injury) and we would be watertight. Caveman rules - sign him up.

I think he'll sign one more contract, he's still got a good few years left yet. One of the best in recent years. Great servant to our club. UTV

Whatever happens we need to be looking into bringing a quality central defender into the club. Ridge looks as if he's on his way, Olof's long term future is unsure right now, while Martin Laursen, while on his day a truly world class central defender, is seemingly injury prone. That leaves Gary Cahill, who I think will end up as one of our first choice central defenders before too long. We need to strengthen.
