Players Expect New Signings

Players Expect New Signings

According to Villa defender Olof Mellberg, 'the players expect more signings'. So do the fans!!

Villa kick off the new season two weeks today against Liverpool and with so many exits this summer, it is surely obvious that more players will be incoming? Lets hope we get the ink dry and the players in the claret and blue shirts as soon as O'Neill returns from the pre-season tour of America/Canada.

Mellberg told the official site:

'I think there will be more movement in the transfer market. The manager has said so and if you look at our squad then we obviously need to strengthen from last season. Quite a few players have left, so the players expect more signings.'

Adding: 'I think there is a real sense of expectation at the club this year, and let's hope so. Quite a few clubs will feel the same- the clubs behind the top three. There has been a huge amount of money spent and huge competition for players. It will still be tough, but obviously our aim has got to be to improve.'

Mellberg, who has just one year left on his contract, says he'll carry on playing well and 'see what happens' in terms of a new contract.

Mellberg currently has a year left on his existing deal, but expects to open talks over a new contract soon.

Meanwhile John Carew is looking forward to challenging for Europe this coming season. 'We have to target getting into Europe next season, for sure. We believe we can do it and I believe we have the players to do it. We will have to work hard, but that is not a problem with this group of players. We are all prepared to do what is necessary to make Aston Villa successful.'

He also says he is looking forward to his first full season and assures us that there is a lot of 'desire' amongst the players to bring success to Villa.

(sorry about the lack of images, it will be fixed soon!)

We have the nucleus of an excellent team & hopefully we'll see the best of Petrov and Young. It's obvious we need bodies in, but apart from Davis, I haven't lost any sleep over any of the players that have left so far. My concern is that I felt we need at least 5 new players in at the end of last season to build a squad but with the 5 or 6 leaving, we now need at least 6 or 7 in my view and I'm not sure that is possible in 4 weeks!

Been talking to some Newcastle friends last week, they are just as concerned as ourselves even more so as their players and managers have been pressing for funds They have lost 7 players and gained 4 mind already I wonder if there will be a rush come August 31

Rest assured, if MON does not get the players in and we fall short again, people will not be happy.Everyone is aware of the situation and with just over 4 weeks left, things will have to happen fast.It seems clubs aren't selling or asking for crazy figures on mediocre players. With the players backing up expectations, that cheque book is coming out!!

I agree onelovevilla. Certain players e.g Petrov, who have been promised big signings by the club might start to become a bit disillusioned if there are no more signings

I think we will see a couple of foreign players coming in now, Boswinga from Porto more than likely, (have I spelt that right ?) Hangeland as centerback cover, and another midfielder, possibly Emana from Italy, a lot of them have been playing in various competitions and have had late holidays etc.... so I'm not too worried yet, if us lot can see it, then I'm sure MON and Randy can. On a whole, the squad is up for it, and very hungry for success, that alone is worth a few million.

We need a John O shea type player who can play in loads of positions. A ulility player like that can act as 2/3 signings...Jaglielka would have been perfect

Two or more quality signings and we'll be well set. A lot of plus points were there to be taken from the other evenings game up in Toronto, along with the confirmation that we are definitely lacking in certain areas. A right full back is an absolute must. Game day here in Ohio, and weatherwise the lads should feel at home. Overcast but muggy, with a definite hint of rain. Better the latter me thinks, rather than your usual typical Ohio weather.
