O'Neill Has Faith In Maloney

Martin O'Neill has spoken about his last gasp signing of Scottish international Shaun Maloney.

The Villa boss said: 'We were very encouraged with the way it progressed and we knew Shaun wanted to come and sign. We agreed everything with Celtic, which was obviously pleasing and then it was simply a race against time. He is a very decent player, not only in my time at Celtic, but he has done excellently in the last couple of seasons.'

Adding: 'He was out of contract in the summer and we left it late before we even went in for him because I thought he would sign a new contract at Celtic. But we had a chance, he wanted to take it and we wanted to do it. Shaun actually came on as a very young substitute in the Uefa Cup Final in 2003 and that shows how highly I think of him. When Henrik Larsson had a face injury, with a depressed fracture of his cheekbone, and was out for four or five weeks Maloney came in and played alongside Chris Sutton at centre forward.'

'He scored in the Uefa Cup run. He's an excellent player and I think he is as conscientious as they come.'

Great to see more youth signing up, makes a welcome change from what we've done in recent years panic buying players who were two years past their prime!

MON knows who he wants but the Celtic link of half decent players must be drying up soon.

Yeah you'd have to think maloney is the last from Celtic now. It's not much of a gamble for that price tho.
DeanoVilla
1m to buy out the remaining 6 months of his contract is a fair amount.
Hoss The Villain
Shaun Maloney will be a great buy. I watched him in Champs League earlier this season, for The Tic, he was awesome. Dominated the game in a Rooney-esque manner from outside left, cutting in, dgreat vision, direct accurate defence splitting passes, he'll be a great midlfielder and can play right up front if we need him too.
Astonvillionaire
Astonvillionaire, you are bang on here. My best mate's a Celtic fan - he's good. But most importantly is different from what we have currently, young and is a natural finisher. He's such a bargain compared to say 8m for Beattie, 8m for Heskey, 12m for Crouch need I go on
tarzan
As well sutton and Petrov have hardly been disasters and judging by Carew and Young I think you got to just trust the man.
tylervilla
Celtic fan here. You have got a good player here and a guy that is great with the fans after having met him many times. Feel a wee bit betrayed but we got some money for him and he wasnt going to get a game ahead of McGeady. Good luck to him
Graeme Morrison
OMG!! A friendly word about Maloney from a Celtic fan. Nice one Graeme. Very happy about this signing - in fact all 4 signings (inc Bardsley). Maloney has a decent scoring record despite starting most games on the bench. UTV!!
Adam Deuce
Graeme what's this McGeady like? Why is he ahead of Maloney? What are Maloney's qualities? Just interested.
tarzan
Shall we buy McGeady just in case??
Gazvilla
Would we be better off then playing Barry at left back, Maloney on the left wing, Young on the right and Carew and Gabby up front? We could also keep Buoma at left back, Barry next to Petrov etc. Any views?
Gazvilla
soz to interrupt but i gotta a feelin this guy is gonna be rather gd for just 1 million. he has got some SERIOUS potential and some of his goals are outstanding i think he will turn out to be up there with the other to permanent signings!!! no joke i think this guy could be seriously gd. THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT THE FUTURE IS CLARET AND BLUE
GABBY16
McGeady is really fast and skilful, rips it out of defenders for fun and scores goals. Hed be our equivalent of C.Ronaldo, A.Lennon and that type of player. Am no sayn this coz Maloney has left coz hes a great player as well but I think McGeady is more naturally talented
Graeme Morrison
Maloney would defo be best on your left side and play Carew with a smaller striker up front with Petrov just in behind - thats were he is at his best
Graeme Morrison
Well done Randy Lerner. No at all signings will prove to be successful but the Chairman has certainly done his bit, ensuring we get players in.
Stevew
Well said Stevew. Mr Lerner has backed MON 100%, and we couldn't have asked for more. We only know about the four new faces that came in, you can bet that we tried for countless others, but for one reason or another we were unable to complete the deals. Welcome aboard Shaun Maloney. Welcome to the premiership.

ughhh Maloney Baloney
Christo
Give the bloke a chance Christo, he aint even kicked a ball for us yet.

Hi, A REAL Celtic fan here - not Graeme Morrison! Maloney is by far Celtic's best outfield player. I would love it if you bought McGeady off us, he's like Ronaldo but without the pace, crossing skills, finishing etc..... he is infact just a Sunday League showboater who the chavs among the celtic support like along with Neil Lennon and the rubbish Graveson as he's one of them. Villa boys - u just got yourselves the next Larsson, enjoy...you B@@@@@ds x
Vanpablo
right guys, here's what you've just got yourself...enjoy the goals!! http://media.putfile.com/Shaun-Maloney-Player-of-the-year-2006
Vanpablo
Vanpablo, your a star, cheers man, I can now understand why there are so many pi**ed off fans. Maloney, welcome to the Villa.
steff_the_villan
Vanpablo, u know as well as I do that Maloney was not the best player at Celtic - it is Nakamura, followed by either Boruc or Vennegoor of Hesselink. No doubt Maloney is a fantastic player, absolutely no doubt but he was struggling to get a game in front of McGeady and even Riordan of late
Graeme Morrison
Greame Morrison - If player plays ahead of another player it is as much down to the manager as it is the individual. How many times have we stood on the terraces bemoaning the fact that so and so can't get a game whilst such and such is having a howler week in week out? MON has a vision and we at the Villa have all jumped aboard the magical mystery tour. It seems too good to be true at the mo. For the first time in 37 years of following the Villa I sense real ambition and a determination to succeed. Hey, it may come crumbling down but for once we are going to have a go. SO EVERYONE - COME ON AND JUMP ABOARD WE ARE ON THE MARCH!
myleftfoot
Just like the days of Tommy Doc!!
Gordonsleftboot
This is fantastic what is happening at the Villa, 3 really class signings plus a great addition on loan. It was a huge decision for Barry to keep the faith and stay with the Villa last summer, i would reckon now that he's certainly glad he did and every credit to him for having the faith in what MON and Randy's plans for the future. All we need is a turn of luck, the confidence to come back and then everyone else in the Premiership better watch out. Exciting times, i cann't wait for my next visit back to the old country to get down and watch them.
melbourne holte ende
Maloney is a money grabbing ********. Who sold himself for a mediocre club in the bottom of the EPL and can forgett all about winning trophys and playing in the CL.
Sean84
Nakamura is now Celtic's best player. I love JVoH aswell, however I'm not daft enough not to realise that a couple of reasons for him looking so good are that the options are 1, Kenny Miller who is a good athlete but not a footballer. or 2, "Magic" who can only score against Dunfermline. As for Villa, you got yourselves Carew, a decent goal getter, but an excellent partner and a great long option. guys McGeady is ****.
Vanpablo
In twelve months time, Maloney will be a Scotland regular.
