O'Neill Has Faith In Maloney

O'Neill Has Faith In Maloney

Martin O'Neill has spoken about his last gasp signing of Scottish international Shaun Maloney.

The Villa boss said: 'We were very encouraged with the way it progressed and we knew Shaun wanted to come and sign. We agreed everything with Celtic, which was obviously pleasing and then it was simply a race against time. He is a very decent player, not only in my time at Celtic, but he has done excellently in the last couple of seasons.'

Adding: 'He was out of contract in the summer and we left it late before we even went in for him because I thought he would sign a new contract at Celtic. But we had a chance, he wanted to take it and we wanted to do it. Shaun actually came on as a very young substitute in the Uefa Cup Final in 2003 and that shows how highly I think of him. When Henrik Larsson had a face injury, with a depressed fracture of his cheekbone, and was out for four or five weeks Maloney came in and played alongside Chris Sutton at centre forward.'

'He scored in the Uefa Cup run. He's an excellent player and I think he is as conscientious as they come.'

Great to see more youth signing up, makes a welcome change from what we've done in recent years panic buying players who were two years past their prime!

MON knows who he wants but the Celtic link of half decent players must be drying up soon.

Yeah you'd have to think maloney is the last from Celtic now. It's not much of a gamble for that price tho.

£1m to buy out the remaining 6 months of his contract is a fair amount.

Shaun Maloney will be a great buy. I watched him in Champs League earlier this season, for The Tic, he was awesome. Dominated the game in a Rooney-esque manner from outside left, cutting in, dgreat vision, direct accurate defence splitting passes, he'll be a great midlfielder and can play right up front if we need him too.

Astonvillionaire, you are bang on here. My best mate's a Celtic fan - he's good. But most importantly is different from what we have currently, young and is a natural finisher. He's such a bargain compared to say 8m for Beattie, 8m for Heskey, 12m for Crouch need I go on

As well sutton and Petrov have hardly been disasters and judging by Carew and Young I think you got to just trust the man.

Celtic fan here. You have got a good player here and a guy that is great with the fans after having met him many times. Feel a wee bit betrayed but we got some money for him and he wasnt going to get a game ahead of McGeady. Good luck to him

OMG!! A friendly word about Maloney from a Celtic fan. Nice one Graeme. Very happy about this signing - in fact all 4 signings (inc Bardsley). Maloney has a decent scoring record despite starting most games on the bench. UTV!!

Graeme what's this McGeady like? Why is he ahead of Maloney? What are Maloney's qualities? Just interested.
