'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villa Will Bounce Back

Martin O'Neill was mystified as to how Villa once again played well and lost a game after losing 3-1 to Newcastle last night.

The Villa boss said: 'It's hard to believe we've played so well and yet lost that one. I was very pleased with some of the football played tonight. We made a nightmare start and I'm not too pleased with the goals conceded, but after that, we outplayed Newcastle in the first-half. We continued to play well after the break, but the equaliser wouldn't come.'

'I felt John Carew had what should have been a goal disallowed in the second-half. He was penalised for pushing, but if anything he was the man being fouled. That probably summed-up our luck tonight. But Ashley Young got the goal he deserved on his debut and both new signings played extremely well. They linked-up like they've played together for years and that augurs well for the future.'

'Overall, the travelling fans gave us a great reception because they knew how well we played, but I know that in three days time nobody will care about the performance - this is a results business. Now we have to get back to winning ways in what is a bi, big game against West Ham at Villa Park on Saturday.'

On the positive side, Ashley Young could have had a hattrick and looks like he could be a great player for us and John Carew, who still isn't fully match fit, looked a real handful and despite it being disallowed, scored a perfectly good goal. He also looked like it wasn't all brawn, he showed some great bits of skill and linked up nicely with Young.

Ashley Young told the official site: 'We should have had all three points, but there were positive signs. I am happy to get the goal but disappointed that we didn't get the three points because I felt that having got it back to 2-1 we could easily have gone on and won the game.'

Adding: 'We showed a lot of character to come back into it. Having been at the club for the last few days I could tell that the lads have that character because of the team bond that there is. That's why it is so disappointing not to get the three points.'

Next up, West Ham at Villa Park, lets pack the place out and show the Pink & Blues how the real Claret & Blues play!

We lost, end of story, now we really need 3 points on saturday or i fear the worst!

Anyone go to the game last night? Were they singing the Carew/Vindaloo song?
DeanoVilla
Listening to the match on the radio it was one-way traffic after the seventh minute and I couldn't believe we lost 3-1! Young sounds a snip at £9.6m and Carew, who needs a good few matches to get up to fitness, still managed to terrorise the Barcode defence! I've never felt so positive after a defeat! UTV!

so many positives to come out of a bad result - we needed to see a performance and we got one, still some are not playing to their full potential (Petrov), so let hope we can change that and we can look up the table.
edgley_1957
Agreed edgley, Petrov will have to show more but at least we have options, say Davis, Maloney.Young looked excellent trying to read ahead of the game looking for through balls and the boy can shift. Considering Carew has not played since Dec 6th and only played 4 games all season, his match fitness and touch will need to come back but he gave the bejeebies!!, to their defence.Maloney is one of those link atackers like Rooneyesk so another option we have not had in the team for a while.13 to go and we need to send West ham & Upson( he'll get some ****) packing on Saturday. It's up to all of us to push on.Best singing voice for Saturday!!

Great positives from the game, we destroyed them. I think we are going to rip West Ham apart this weekend.

It's a must win game on saturday. West Ham need three points desperately, hopefully we can exploit that. Carew to get two and Villa to win 3-1. C'mon!!

Noticed the Sty dwellers got short shrift putting in a bid for Ridgewell! Glad to see MON (unlike my brother) hasn't lost his marbles

Should be a very good crowd on hand to witness hopefully a very important Villa victory. Obviously wont be easy though, despite West Ham's poor recent form. Curbishley never does well when he brings a team to Villa Park, lets hope that that statistic continues. We didnt destroy Newcastle, Cubos. We lost 3-1. Yes in patches we looked very, very good, but the geordies took their chances, we didn't ours. We could have easily been 3-0 down when Parker hit the bar, and then it could easily have gone on to be a rout. What I'm saying is, we looked very good going forward, put them under a lot of pressure, came away with several plus points, but no, we didn't destroy them.

We give away too many soft goals. I thought McCann was awful last night. Liked the look of the new lads. Young looks like he could be really special.

Villa to finally turn the corner and start putting results that reflect their performances. W=Even though we have only had one win since Noah launched the Ark we are not in the smelly stuff yet and the remaining fixtures are not that bad either.

I know it seems like we haven't won since a Centurion was a rank not a tank, but we are gonna stuff wham big style on Saturday!!
jonah
Yes, I was there last night DeanoVilla, and no they weren't singing the Carew/Vindaloo song. Carews on fire was sung regularly though if that helps, and if that means anything?
glensider
I was singing chim chiminey chim chiminey chim chim Carew and as for the matcgh against the Hammers I feel we will win that
Christo
We need to stuff wham or we'll be the poo

We should have beat them by at least a couple at Upton Park. They got lucky, but no mistake this time out.
