Another Transfer Window Surprise?

Aston Villa's manager Martin O'Neill has said that they will continue to work up right until the end of the transfer window in an attempt to bring in yet more players.

A source close to the club told me recently they'd be very busy trying to bring in the right players and somewhat frustrated by the lack of availability.

Still, they've manged to off-load an obviously unhappy Milan Baros and bring in a striker, in John Carew, who should be at his prime at the age of 27. They've also broken the previous record spend (Juan Pablo Angel as if you didn't know) by brining in Ashley Young from Watford. As well as bringing Phil Bardsley on loan from Manchester United, a player who has since said he'd love a permanent move to Villa Park.

O'Neill said: 'There are a few things in the offing and we're going to be working right to the last minute. There's nothing definite at this time. I'll probably be delayed going up to Newcastle for a while, but there are 36 hours to go, so I might as well see it to the end.'

sounds like martin is going to be speaking to a player or two 2moro then hopefully,i'd be happy with one more surprise signing,that would show a dramatic improvement in our squad until the real fun begins in the summer.

aimar would be quality i agree.and heres one for the summer juan roman riquelme who's contract is nearly up and who has had a big fall out with villareal. why shouldnt villa try to attract this type of player in the summer,absolutely no reason.

There is perhaps an expectation of more signings, which is why I'll be disaapointed if there isn't one or two. Onelovevilla makes a good point regarding the Newcastle match. With Villa perhaps stopping up North tonight or at least MON concentrating on the match it will be very difficult to negotiate any transfers.....unless..... he's already spoken to them? How on earth would he be able to keep them secret because there are no sniffs whatsoever of any news.

I just love this thread, its been A1. One thing for sure, good players want to join our club - word has got out that we mean business. Smith would be great on loan, the right right winger position is most interesting. It may depend on the "transfer carousel" with certain teams needing to offload (Spurs, Newcastle & even Chelsea). But I think we have SWP, Milner and Gera in the frame.

I think Fear pointed out recently, we may see big turn over of staff in the summer if we are to progress, MON will demand that players either step up or ship out. If the right players become available now then there may be a few surprises. Let's face it Bouma, Samule, Gardner etc. arenot in the same league as names mentioned above.

The part I am looking forward to is actually seeing a bench that can change a game and inflict some damage or at least provide options and cover.Options like Berger,Moore,Angel(maybe not) Davis,osbourne,samuel,Ridgewell,hughes(again maybe not) laursen plus of course taadaaaa!..our new deadline signings.

if i can make a comment.... looking at the entire villan transfer sagas, weve outlayed only 10m - now not wanting to sound so pessimistic (im a villan after all) but i would have expected more to be done this January. I know that its all if the clubs want to sell as well, but villa was given 10m for the sale of Serpentine Park, so that basically means that we have outlayed nothing this transfer window. perhaps Randy is holding back to the summer ? any thoughts

With Ellis the training ground building actually came to a halt. Therefore, the car park money is paying for the training ground. Spending 10 mill (transfer record) on 1 player and then attracting Carew speaks volumes for the stature of the club. On the transfer front, with Hendrie going (is that 5 out now, 6 with the twins?) we are an even smaller squad. MON must have something up his sleeve...... pleaseeeeeeeeeeee.

is being reported in the papers this morning that Spurs are on the verge of completing a deal for Gareth Bale. However the deal includes him going back on loan until the end of the season to help them get promoted. Come on Tottenham, £10 million is a bit overpriced for a 17 year old but to loan him back aswell when Spurs need a left back desperately is just a joke. BTW this was posted by OAL. i know we shall spent 10 mil on a school kid with no prem exp and loan him back. and he has the cheek to come here and take the ***** out of our transfers. some one ban him (sorry hat to let that go)

Reading are beating Wigan - top six looks realistic for them, and they are in the FA Cup, why would Sidwell leave? Does the Keane transfer request rumour have any basis? Smith and Gera (or Davis) are likely. Davis is on good money though

Word coming from Celtic park tonight is that Shaun Maloney has signed a pre-contract which will take him to Aston Villa in the Summer. However speculation is that Maloney has the option to stay at Celtic should Celtic offer him a 70 PERCENT increase on his current deal. Maloney who has been popular at Celtic park has NOT been getting into the first team due to injury and word at the club is that the management had decided to put the player on the back shelf due to his erratic attitude towards contract talks

Have to wait for the official word on this. It's all well and good joining in the summer but we need reinforcements now. A midfielder is a must. I'm fairly sure someone will come in tomorrow. There is no sense in letting Hendrie go and not replacing him. I think we'll sign Gera and smith, the latter on loan.

I think Maloney would be a good signing if we gewt him, he gives a differant sort of attacking option on then left side compared to what barry can give us. It will also allow for differant options such as the 433 that we played at the begining of the year and allow barry to play on the left side of the 3 central midfielders. Probably wont be the best player in the team, and i would prefair mcgeady that maloney, but i think he will become a decent squad member, and on a free is good business.

How stupid is it to have games on the night that the transfer window closes! Most of the January window transfer deals are finalised on the last day, surely it’s a huge disadvantage to a club that is trying to buy or sell a player and they have to play a game – difficult to finalise deals and/or very disruptive to the preparation for that game. Whats this Maloney like? I'd like to see Smith come, plenty of mongrel about him which is what we need plus he'll be wanting to make up for lost time and will have something to prove, i reckon he'd be a great addition.

We know he's young like the majority of the present team we have. I'm all for youth to build towards the future but we needed at least an experienced midfielder and defender to help us through to the summer.

maloney was the first player to get scottish PFA player of the year and young player of the year, i think scoring 16 goals. Theres a gr8 clip on youtube scoring a scissor kick volley on edge of area. He did his cruciate in 2004.
