Mellberg and McCann To Get New Deals

Martin O'Neill says he is looking to tie both defender Olof Mellberg and midfielder Gavin McCann to new contracts as soon as the transfer window business ends at the end of January.

Both have 18 months left their contacts and Martin O'Neill obviously sees them as integral part of his re-building plans.

The Villa boss said: 'There are a couple of players whose contracts have got a year and a half to run and Olof's in a similar situation to Gavin McCann. Once we get the transfer deadline out of the way, sitting down with these people is something I'll be looking at between now and May - Olof included to discuss their futures.'

And on the rumour that Levante were interested in our bearded wonder, O'Neill added: 'No one from Levante has called, and I'd be giving it short shrift if they did. Olof was absolutely splendid on Saturday. He took an awful lot of responsibility, and over the season he's done well. He's got himself re-invigorated again and he was excellent on Saturday. He'd relinquished the captaincy at international level and I don't think it's caused him too many sleepless nights.'

Good, theyboth deserve it. Especially Awesome Ollie.

Absolutely agree. They both deserve to have the opportunity to play a role the next few seasons as the MON/RL bandwagon really begins to pick up pace. New signings are all well and good, but current performers such as Olof and Gavin, who both seem to have been around Villa Park forever, have the right to become part of the new era.

Having said that though, both are of course getting on in years, so new deals should be agreed only on the understanding that they can expect fierce competition in the months ahead. First team football is no longer a guarantee.
