'If It's Football, It's Vital'

O'Neill Aiming For Top Four

Martin O'Neill says he hopes the arrival of John Carew and the pending transfer of Ashley Young shows that Villa mean business.

The Villa manager believes that the 27-year-old Norwegian striker Carew, could help fire Villa towards Champions League contention.

'Aston Villa are capable of doing it - absolutely. It should be where the club is striving to go and it is up to us to try and get Villa to be a really strong football club. We have certainly got the fan base and we have certainly got the potential, there is no doubt about it. Under the new owner I believe Villa have a real fighting chance of doing it because I think he is really well intentioned.'

Adding: 'If certain things come to fruition, then it will be worthwhile.'

I hadn't realised our record was so bad in recent years, bad yes, not this bad, as we've not qualified through the league since 1998, although we did make a doomed appearance in the Uefa following our inter-two-bob win in 2001.

Meanwhile Milan Baros has spoken of his departure: 'I hadn't wanted to leave England at the time because I wished to develop in the Premiership. A new opportunity came when Lyon made their offer and I felt that it was the right moment to move.'

Having turned down Lyon once, he said he has no regrets about not going then but 'Today the situation has changed and I am delighted to come here. I hope to bring all my qualities to the team.'

I appreciate we are going in the right direction but I dont want to get too carried away. Lets be honest, the top 3 probably wouldnt have look twice at signing Young or Carew. The day we are signing players that the top 3 also want is the day I'm looking forward to. Long way off yet tho.

That's right Martin. In for a penny in for a pound. If we are going to compete let's do it at the highest level.Mark hughes today said,I see Blackburn as a top 10, top 6 club.Martin says I want to be a top 4 club(or top 3 if Platini get's in at Uefa and has his way with Champ league places). We are putting the players in place to achieve that and it has only started...get in!

I agree Christo, there was obviously the nails in the noses coffin, but apart from that not too memorable, he could have been good for us, his "style" didn't fit his supply, and he seriously looked like he could not be bothered most the time. but past is past, onward and upwards

'If certain things come to fruition, then it will be worthwhile.' MON got more Irons in the fire? Something to share with the rest of us Martin?

There is no reason we can't get UEFA cup football - we have dealt with Chelsea and Manure both Home and Away. Look at our remaining home games: Hammers, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton, Wigan, Portsmouth, Sheff Utd - at least four wins there, perhaps five, and who is to say we can't old the scouse and Arsenal? Our away games are promising too: Newcastle, Reading, Fulham, Blackburn, Boro, Man City, Bolton - we should aim to win 4 of those.

By the way has anyone seen Ashley Young? I might pop a few pictures on lamposts around VP offering a reward. ''Young striker seen at VP, missing, pressumed to be talking to Totscum''.

I think that without a doubt the signing of both Carew and Young, the fact that as a club we are prepares to pay big bucks to secure their services, allied to the fact that MON is our manager, will send out the right signals to the rest of the premiership that AVFC are well and truly back in business, as opposed to being mere premiership bit part players. It will also, and probably more importantly, send out a clear message to the moaning, negative folk out there who claim they follow the club, that RL and MON aren't in this to sit on their rears and gently go with the flow.

One step at a time though. Action not words. We're still someway off being a top six outfit.
