Mellberg BLASTS Back!

Mellberg BLASTS Back!

OK, leading up to the January transfer window is always silly season, but this story takes the biscuit.

Olof Mellberg, the rock in the centre of the Aston Villa defence, was linked to Birmingham City.

Come on, how is that even worthy of print space in a paper? The Villa captain has obviously rubbished the reports and told Sportbladet 'It is bull**** that I am tired of being at Villa,' but even if he was looking to move, does anyone seriously expect such a quality player to be looking at a smaller club in a worse position in the league than Villa?

The Sweden international, who according to a paper in Sweden wanted a new challenge, said: 'The reason that some clubs have shown an interest is that it's going well for me and nothing else. I can't imagine that Birmingham have shown an interest in me and neither have I for them.

Mellberg has been with Villa for 4 1/2 years and has made 170 appearances, although he is currently missing from action because of a hamstring problem.

Talking about defenders, Zat Knight of Fulham has again been linked to a £3million move to Villa. Again, WHY? Doug has said there is no money to spend and that loans are all O'Leary can go for. So HOW would we buy a player with those restrictions? Especially when news of a impending takeover could prove to be slightly wide of the mark!
