O'Neill Fears For Villa Job

James Nursey from the Mirror has quotes from Villa boss Martin O'Neill today hinting that he fears for his job if he can't turn around the slump that has seen no wins in 12 games.

To be fair, O'Neill has his eyes fully open that this is a results let industry anyway, he spoke several times at the Tom Ross - Capital Gold forum a few months back about the risks in management, that if he doesn't produce the goods he won't expect to keep his job and that he would be embarrassed to take a long contract only to find he wasn't doing a good job.

Villa are currently 15th and are on the worst run since 1987, so you can understand the comments by the boss, but I can't see him being in much danger at present, if this was happening next season after spending a few quid, or is it dollars, then maybe!?

O'Neill said: 'We just have to try and win - just ask Dowie. We are not getting the points on the board so I am concerned. Watford is now a must-win game. That sounds as if we are putting pressure on ourselves but it is because we can't keep going in the Premiership not winning matches and expecting to survive or thrive.'

Adding: 'We have got a battle on our hands. I always expected a slight hiccup but I didn't expect it to last as long as it has. We've got to arrest the slide and get a win on board and we must start now. We've got 15 games left and it is a big ask for the young players in the side but we have to be up for the task.'

The run of 12 games:

Wigan 0-0 Villa
Villa 1-1 Middlesbrough
Villa 1-3 Man City
Portsmouth 2-2 Villa
Sheffield United 2-2 Villa
Villa 0-1 Bolton
Villa 0-3 Man Utd
Spurs 2-1 Villa
Charlton 2-1 Villa
Villa 0-0 Chelsea
Man Utd 2-1 Villa (FA Cup)
Man Utd 3-1 Villa

Would be good to see the Villa faithful pack Villa Park on Saturday v Watford and give the team the lift they so clearly need to halt this slide.

its cheap tickets so im guessing 37k we will need it! we need to win a match 4-0 and find some confidence. If we had any goal scorers we might just!

He should be bloody worried, hes useless, bring back O'Leary i say ;)
mackaavfc
I dont wanna be reminded of those results

Can't make Saturday's match but it's a must-win for us. I think Mart has got his tongue firmly in his cheek, saying his job's in danger. Nobody's in any doubt as to the size of the task at VP. And let's not get too frustrated with the current tranfer window inactivity -the January window is like ebay...plenty of useless panic buys by the smaller clubs with the real business being done by the big boys at the very last minute!
pongogidman
got to win but no way is MON under pressure, maybe if it was next season after spending millions, but not now, those days are over with manager merry-go-rounds - I hope!
The Fear
lets not forget the sequence of games we have played since the poor run began.not many teames would do much better.we now have most of the difficult games out of the way and i see no reason why we cant begin to climb again.one positive that we can also take is that the players carry the fight on when we do fall behind unlike last year when they just gave up.

Come on everyone sing it with me "We want O'Neil Out"
mackaavfc
I hope mackaavfc is joking. MON is one of the best out there. It's our ***** poor squad that's not helping matters any. What MON inherited was a shamles, and what he's already brought back is pride and self respect. Results will come. Just look at Fergie's first couple years. We just need us a goal-scorer.

505anthony - or what?

macka - fight, fight, fight, fight.

wanna straightener?
mackaavfc
It is a results driven industry as MON states, but any suggestion that his job should in any way be in doubt, is surely three years premature?
glensider
Even if a tongue in cheek comment I don't think he should have said it. With the Petrov rumour it's just a negative vibe Villa could do without when we're trying to attract players.

mackaavfc - I never heard you arguing for O'Leary to stay at the end of last season. Or were you really the fan with the banner "We're not fickle, we just don't like you". O'Neill has a million miles to go before he is half as bad as O'Leary. That said, let's all get behind him and the team on Saturday (especially you "Holtenders") to show him that we are all still "True Villans". Try to "bring a friend" -"voices mean goals and goals mean points".
villacross
Villacross - Mackaavfc thinks the sun shines out of MON's butt, and was being a tad sarcastic with the above comments. Didn't expect anyone to take it literally.
mackaavfc
Come on guys, its called sarcasm.

I thought sacking D'OL was a dreadful mistake.Losing doug was a hammer blow and appointing MoN was short sighted to say the least.P.S.I am mental.
